The Big Business Of Online Dating

Posted on May 10, 2011

AD AGE – Feb 14 – Online Dating is clearly big business: In the U.S. alone, internet dating is a $1.3 billion market, and PlentyofFish alone had 122M visits in January, according to Experian. The number of people scrambling for romance via online dating starts growing in November and peaks at Valentine's Day. "People realize sitting around the Thanksgiving table with their family and think, 'Hey, I don't have my other half' or 'My sister's married and I'm not,' so it's a cyclical event," said Mark Brooks, dating industry consultant at OnlinePersonalsWatch.com. The sector has also seen some matchmaking of its own: Just a few weeks ago, Match.com purchased OKCupid. Mr. Brooks said that Match.com has been acting like the Google of the dating world and gobbling up smaller dating sites at a quick pace.

Digital Romance: The Business Of Online Dating

Posted on May 3, 2011

Online dating - couple walking on keyboard ATLANTA POST – May 3 – Online dating is now the third most popular way for singles to meet, ranking behind the workplace and school (#1) and friends and family (#2), but ahead of bars (#4), according to an eHarmony study. ~113M people visit dating sites each month. 6 out of 10 African Americans are unmarried, according to Packaged Facts, while according to the 2004 U.S. census, 42% of all black women have never been married. Such statistics make the black community a prime target for the online dating industry. BlackPeopleMeet.com, was the 11th most visited dating site in March, reaching 4% of the total U.S. black population, according to Experian Hitwise. Other sites targeting African Americans include BlackSingles.com, AfricaSingles.net, BlackPeopleLove.com and SoulSingles.com. ~90% of online daters stick to the top 100 dating sites though, according to industry consultant Mark Brooks. Among the world's top sites are PlentyofFish, Zoosk, Manhunt, eHarmony. These sites offer relationship services that social networks do not, Brooks pointed out. "Dating sites protect the name and identity of people until they're ready to give it up. Facebook is a handy tool for researching people. You can look them up on Facebook and see what kind of company they keep. So the two work hand in hand."

How are Internet dating sites changing society? In a number of significant ways.
People are able to weed out people with show-stopping attributes. Second, dating sites have leveled the playing field for men and women. Women are not penalized for making first moves. Third, as a research paper by Brooks points out, singles are becoming more picky because online dating allows them to be more selective.

Online dating has a well-known downside. People online tend to lie about themselves. According to a study by OKCupid, men fib about their height. Half of all daters lie about their weight, and most people inflate their salaries by ~20%. A danger to avoid is a tendency to mask faults by creating the perfect date in the mind's eye. "When you start talking to somebody and you really want them to be the perfect match, you might start projecting qualities onto them that you would most desire, and that's called the halo effect," said Brooks. "There's a huge fantasy element to this, which is one reason why the virtual world sites are big," he continued. "There's a mental need for this, for believing that virtual worlds are better than the real world. A lot of Internet daters are disappointed. And ultimately people need to get out on 20 dates before they ever make their choice. They need to go experience the real world first." Chemistry counts, and daters must meet in person to develop a close relationship. "Personally, I do not think we will ever take the mystery out of dating and intimate connection," said Dr. Thomas Bradbury, eHarmony advisor, professor of psychology and founder of the Marriage and Family Development Lab at UCLA. "We are hard-wired to connect, and the daily challenges of creating, maintaining, and improving that connection are likely to be always just outside our grasp."

Plentyoffish Redesign, At Laaast

Posted on April 26, 2011

Plentyoffish partial screenshot OPW – Apr 26 – A POF power-user emailed me. "Plenty Of Fish completely revamped their whole layout to a clean sleek readable logical (for the most part) page with great colors and a much better photo compression scheme that makes jpeg's look very high quality." Very impressive! It's about time.

Online Daters Growing Weary

Posted on April 15, 2011

Plentyoffish new logo VANCOUVER SUN – Apr 15 – Online dating is a booming business in Canada, where PlentyofFish gets ~105M hits a month. But according to U.S.-based Socialone.com, growth in the industry is trending downward, dropping 58% this year alone. It could be that it’s too much work. The solution may be to hire some help. Scott Valdez offers that through his international online service, Virtual Dating Assistants. Valdez’s dating assistants, a group of professional writers and coaches, will take care of all that onerous administrative stuff: Creating an online brand, writing the profile, and sending the engaging emails. VDA offers several different packages starting at ~$400 and going up to $1440. Dates guaranteed.

Mark Brooks: Sure, uniques are down, but revenue isn't.  The nature of the industry is changing, and social networking is drawing users away.  But idating is a more focused and refined premium experience.

Love In The Time Of Smartphones

Posted on February 14, 2011

Smarthpones in love PC WORLD – Feb 14 – These days, it is even easier to find your future partner on the Internet thanks to mobile versions of your favorite dating sites. Sites like OKCupid, Match.com, and Plentyoffish all have compatible mobile apps. Flirtomatic is part social network and part dating site. More popular overseas than in the United States, Flirtomatic lets you “flirt” with strangers via either the dedicated mobile app or the mobile Web. Location-based apps that allow you to check in to a bar or restaurant, like Foursquare or Gowalla, are all the rage right now, especially since Facebook has jumped on the bandwagon. They can help friends find each other during a night on the town, and they’re useful for sharing tips about a hot-drink special in the neighborhood. But these apps are also a good way to keep tabs on your partner. FULL ARTICLE @ PC WORLD

Match Point For Internet Dating Sites

Posted on February 14, 2011

Plentyoffish new logo SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY – Feb 13 – According to Experian Hitwise, the UK's most popular dating site is PlentyofFish, whose founder last week accused an alleged hacker of trying to extort money from PlentyofFish. Globally, PlentyofFish has ~28N users, so last week's supposed theft amounts to only the tiniest fraction of the site's total population. However, this is an industry where trust is paramount. Bill Dobbie, CEO Cupid, says: "I am investigating how we can inject more trust into our websites," referring to the technical security issues that are coming into increasing focus throughout the industry. Cupid covers a string of niche sites such as Flirt.com, Cupid.com, PlanetSappho.com and BeNaughty.com, and has more than 9M members in 29 countries. BeNaughty is the UK's 8th most popular site, accounting for 2.62% of all visits in this category. PlentyOfFish has a 19.27%t share, followed by Match.com on 7.82% and Gaydar on 6.4%. Such figures, however, do not reflect a site's "success rate" in pairing up happy new couples. FULL ARTICLE @ SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY

Alleged POF Hacker Claims He Was Only Trying To Help

Posted on February 1, 2011

Chris russo plentyoffish hacker FINANCIAL POST – Feb 1 – On Sunday night, Markus Frind, the founder of Plenty of Fish took to his personal blog to write a story about how his site suffered a serious security breach at the hands of a hacker on Jan. 18. The man he alleges hacked into the Plenty of Fish Website is 23-year-old Chris Russo of Argentina. According to Mr. Frind, Mr. Russo co-ordinated a sophisticated two day attack on Plenty of Fish’s servers in an attempt to gain access to user data, which he allegedly then used in an to attempt to extort money from the site’s owners. The site’s technicians were able shut down the security vulnerability within 60 seconds of learning about it, and that the information from about 345 accounts were accessed. However, in an email to the Financial Post, Mr. Russo said that at no time did he attempt to extort money from Mr. Frind. Rather, he contacted Mr. Frind on Jan. 21 to inform him of the vulnerability in the Plenty of Fish site. He claims Plenty Of Fish thanked him and remained in contact with him and that they were “interested in hiring us as security professionals in order to make an analysis of the platform.” FULL ARTICLE @ FINANCIAL POST
