What Is RealMe? Interview With RealMe CEO Jeff Tinsley

Posted on June 5, 2020

RealMe Jeff TinsleyOPW INTERVIEW – May 5 – RealMe is a new and significant offering specifically designed for improving user safety by allowing users to gage reputation and background. BONUS: This is a profit center for dating apps, rather than a cost center! Here's my interview with Jeff Tinsley.

What is RealMe's founding story?
We founded RealMe in response to the increase in criminal behavior found across all online dating platforms. Last year, the FTC reported romance scam losses of $201MM, up +40% from 2018. This accounts for more than any other fraud reported to the FTC.

RealMe's mission is to protect and make people safer while dating online by giving members access to additional information with Reputation Profiles, creating the first ever truly transparent dating experience. With more information about those they engage with, daters are able to make smarter decisions about these interactions and take back the power to protect themselves.

What does RealMe do best?
RealMe is the most comprehensive composite profile of US adults including machine learning analysis of potentially harmful behavior on social media.

While similar to a Google search, RealMe is a centralized profile of public data creating an easily understood Reputation Score for people to identify bad actors and putting the focus back on finding love.

How does RealMe work with dating partners?
RealMe is a simple API, SDK or custom integration. We can be live with a partner within days through our available widget. Many dating partners work with RealMe as part of their user verification, to match in-app and off-app toxic or harmful behavior, and updating criminal or legal background issues in real-time to ensure ongoing safety of their members.

Some partners have also chosen to include RealMe Reputation Profiles access as part of their paid membership benefits.

What insights are you finding with your initial clients?
It's scary out there. 30% of profiles on dating apps are fake, and of those that are real, we've found dating app users with 20+ criminal flags, one actively dating person had 58 criminal flags.

Increasingly, people are using social media as part of their research of potential dates. RealMe is helping to make this process easier by combining reputation and background information with personal social media content all on one platform.

How are you building on the RealMe product?
RealMe is partnering with innovative tech leaders to create first-to-market industry opportunities. For example, we've partnered with Spectrum Labs, a contextual AI platform that looks beyond keywords to identify larger patterns of abuse, to create the first composite profile of dating app users to bridge in-app and off-app toxic behavior.

Our hope is that the easily applied Reputation Profile and Score data will help dating apps quickly identify potentially damaging accounts before they are able to hurt innocent and vulnerable people looking for love.

Online Daters Face Increased Fraud Risk With COVID-19 Traffic

Posted on April 9, 2020

Realme logo useFORBES – Apr 9 – According to RealMe survey, 61% of Generation Z members and 52% of millennials were already tricked by someone else's online profile. Meanwhile, 12% of Gen Z daters admit they developed a fake profile on social media, and 16% of that same generation used photos of other people on the dating site profiles they established. Only 2% of baby boomers admitted to developing a fake personality online, and 5% of that older generation said they used someone else's pictures on a dating profile. Almost 69% of Gen Z and 61% of millennials made it clear they created false or distorted information on their other social media accounts outside of online dating. Can Coronavirus Make Online Dating Safer and Global – Permanently?

Posted on April 2, 2020

Love in the time of coronaOZY – Mar 30 – Physical dates are out. This is love in the time of coronavirus. Dating and romance are adapting. A growing number of apps and websites are now advertising virtual dating services aimed at keeping you safe, while some are allowing you to find dates in other parts of the world. League Live, launched by The League in late 2019, added a feature that allows users to message "isoDate", and become a member for free for their quarantine period. JWed launched video dates. Loko facilitates virtual dates. Plenty of Fish introduced a livestreaming feature. Tinder announced it is making Passport free for all users. It allows users to search for potential dating partners in faraway countries.

"Once the virus situation abates, virtual dating with video chat can still provide value as an initial step before meeting in person," Ben Rabizadeh of JWed says. Jeff Tinsley of RealMe, a platform dedicated to cultivating online safety, cautions "Don't expect people to be more honest just because it's a video date," he says, and that "as face-to-face meetups become less common, …video dates have the potential to become the norm for now."

Truth and Transparency Offered by RealMe

Posted on March 17, 2020

Realme logo usePR NEWSWIRE – Mar 17 – With over 50M people in the U.S. currently using online dating apps or sites, chances are they've swiped right on a fake or disingenuous profile. In a new FTI Consulting report supported by RealMe, researchers found online dating has given way to new forms of falsehood and deceit. The study calls this societal phenomenon "Generation L," or "Generation Liar," which refers to people who believe it is important to look their best online, even if it means distorting reality. RealMe is a turnkey, no-cost technology solution to protect dating app users. The company's tool, Check, is a platform integration that empowers online daters with trustworthy in-app identity scans and ~325M personal background profiles powered by MyLife. In addition, the company has teamed up with Spectrum Labs, a contextual AI platform that looks beyond keywords to identify larger patterns of toxic behavior.
