Match Hopes to Re-Spark Tinder With a New CMO

Posted on August 5, 2022

Tinder for social mediaMEDIA POST – Bernard Kim, who joined the company as chief executive officer a few months ago, announced that Renate Nyborg is out as Tinder CEO. Melissa Hobley, CMO of Match's OkCupid unit, will move to Tinder CMO. Tinder's revenue growth and new product have been disappointing. "We need to do more to excite our user base to drive top of funnel growth," Kim says. The company is bailing out of the metaverse, at least for now, "given uncertainty about the ultimate contours of the metaverse, as well as the more challenging operating environment." In Q2, Match Group's revenue rose 12% to $795M, and it posted a loss of $10M. "Western markets will settle into slow growth for the next few years," says Mark Brooks, a consultant in the internet dating industry, "until real innovation and shifts into new media are both realizable and can be monetized." When that happens, he says, "internet dating becomes a new game." While he agrees with Kim's decision to back off from the metaverse now, it will have advantages as Web 3.0 gets closer to reality. "It will be important to have a trusted brand because users may have to relinquish more of their privacy in a VR – and especially an AR-driven world." Brooks believes AR has the potential to disrupt dating in ways few can yet imagine, even on par with the way smartphones ushered in a mobile revolution. "AR will bring a different and new level of experience and value in dating."

After ‘Tinder Swindler’ Shockwaves, Tinder Adds In-App Background Checks

Posted on March 15, 2022

Match Group GarboMEDIA POST – Tinder is adding a $2.50 background check option to its popular dating app via Garbo, the new in-app service, which allows people to access public information about violent behavior, including arrests, convictions, and sex offender registry records. "It's been a long time coming," says Mark Brooks, CEO of Courtland Brooks, which consults with online dating apps. "Background checks have been in the works for years. But records haven't always been up to date, and there are gaps in databases." He points out that back in 2011, Match.com agreed to screen users to weed out sex offenders as part of a legal settlement. And while it did so, it didn't make that information public. Brooks says that's likely for two reasons. "First, that might give people a false sense of security. The most dangerous person is the one who hasn't been caught yet." Second, he says, it's unnerving to users who simply hadn't yet wondered if the date they just set up is with a scammer, a sex offender or an ax murderer. Visible background checks can "make people think, 'Hold on! I didn't think I'd need to do something like this!'" Brooks is a consultant to RealMe, a competitor to Garbo that helps detect fake dating profiles. For now, Garbo is only available on Tinder. But Match says it will soon roll it out to additional sites.

OkCupid Lets Users State Their Views on Abortion on Their Profiles

Posted on January 24, 2022

OkCupid pro choice campaignMEDIA POST – OkCupid's subway campaign invites people to make their pro-choice views on abortion part of their dating profile, with each "Pro-Choice" sticker triggering a donation to Planned Parenthood. The new campaign starts this week in New York. Ads will roll out to additional U.S. and global cities beginning March. It's all part of the brand's ongoing mission to have users bring their entire selves to the dating process. "We want you to bring your issues – pun intended – to dating," says CMO Melissa Hobley.
