The Latest Relationship Trend Is ‘Slow Dating’

Posted on March 26, 2018

Once logo new 2018BUSINESS INSIDER – Mar 22 – Dating apps are starting to offer fewer, more curated matches. Dating app Once delivers users one match per day. Then, users have 24h to decide whether they are interested. Once has been available in Europe since 2015; it launched in the US in Feb 2018 and now has 200K US users. Coffee Meets Bagel, which launched in 2012, also presents women with one "bagel" (match) a day. (Men receive up to 21 matches every day and select the people they like, so the app chooses women's bagels from among the men who indicated they liked them.) The League, which launched in 2015, is a more selective dating app for ambitious professionals. Then there's Happn, which debuted in 2014 in Paris. Users who subscribe to Happn Essential get 10 chances to "Say Hi" to another user every day. It's possible that daters and app-developers alike have begun to observe the effects of what social scientists call "choice overload" or the "paradox of choice." The more options you have, research suggests, the less likely you are to make any decision at all.

LinkedIn’s Career Advice App Vs. Bumble Bizz

Posted on December 19, 2017

Linkedin-bumbleBUSINESS INSIDER – Dec 16 – Shana Lebowitz from Business Insider has recently tried out two new, digital approaches to networking: LinkedIn Career Advice and Bumble Bizz. She had a hard time connecting with fellow journalists and starting conversations on both. Bumble Bizz proved to facilitate a more enjoyable, seamless experience – although not that effective in actually meeting people. LinkedIn has just recently launched its Career Advice feature. It allows users to find potential mentors and mentees and chat online or offline. Bumble Bizz is connecting women and men with similar professional interests.

Psychologist Eli Finkel: Tinder And Bumble Are The Only Dating Services Worth Your Time

Posted on October 2, 2017

Eli finkel linkedinBUSINESS INSIDER – Sep 28 – Psychologist Eli Finkel says the only real advantage to online dating is that it introduces you to tons of potential dates. There's no evidence that matching algorithms work, Finkel says. That's why Finkel thinks apps like Tinder and Bumble are the best option for single people today. Finkel is a psychologist at Northwestern University and a professor at the Kellogg School of Management; he's also the author of "The All-or-Nothing Marriage." Finkel and his colleagues have been studying online dating for years."

The Most Important Quality In A Romantic Partner Is Much Harder To Spot

Posted on July 29, 2017

Alexandra-solomonBUSINESS INSIDER – July 27 – "Two people who are able to competently handle all of the sh– that hits the fan. That's the biggest thing a long-term relationship needs in order to be successful," said Alexandra Solomon, a psychologist at Northwestern University. She teaches a course at Northwestern called "Marriage 101"; she recently published a book titled "Loving Bravely." In the book, Solomon guides readers on a journey toward relational self-awareness. She is saying that it is important to find a relationally self-aware partner because "external trappings" – think jobs, income, appearance – tend to "come and go." It's not so easy to gauge someone's relational self-awareness level on the first few dates. But if you notice that the person blows up at the waiter for bringing them the wrong drink, that's not a great sign. Solomon also suggests paying attention to how the person talks about their past relationships.

We Can Tell If A First Date Is Going Well Based On Language Choice

Posted on July 22, 2017

BUSINESS INSIDER – June 3 – Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, New York Times writer, former Google data scientist, and author of "Everybody Lies" reveals the common language used on successful first dates. A man can increase his odds of getting a second date if he shows support. If he says things like, "that must be tough," or, "that sounds hard." He can also increase the odds of a second date if he laughs at a woman's jokes and doesn't interrupt her constantly. For men, the most beautiful word is "I." When a woman talks about herself more, it's actually a sign that she likes him, she feels comfortable opening up.

Mandy Ginsberg, CEO Of Match: “Online Dating Hasn’t Solved The Hardest Part Of Finding Love”

Posted on July 22, 2017

Match group mandy ginsberg officialBUSINESS INSIDER – July 20 – "No matter what medium you use to meet people, you're going to face the same challenges in finding a relationship", said Mandy Ginsberg, CEO of Match Group. "It's not like you're this holy grail that came into the dating category. You still heard the same things you heard, which is ability to have chemistry, or someone not being sure about their intent, or going out on endless first dates and nothing ever clicking. People are still people — now you're just being introduced to a bigger pool of them. That doesn't mean you won't meet the love of your life online but it may take some rejection and disappointment before you get there."

POF Data About Dating Profiles

Posted on February 14, 2017

Pof logo smallBUSINESS INSIDER – Feb 14 – Data from POF reveals that users spend ~10 minutes creating their profile, on average – but those who spend ~20 minutes are twice as likely to leave the site in a relationship. Users who indicate that they speak a second language receive significantly more messages. One likely reason, said POF data scientist Michael McDermott, is that these people seem more thoughtful and open.

“Power Pose” – The Best Body Language To Use In Online Dating Profile

Posted on July 1, 2016

Man on pool floatBUSINESS INSIDER – July 1 – HBS professor Amy Cuddy saw her now husband for the first time on Facebook. She noticed his photo because he was positioned "in the most extreme 'power pose' imaginable." "Power pose" is a term that Cuddy coined in her 2012 TED Talk, and it describes an expansive posture that can make you feel more powerful and confident. Research suggests that we're more attracted to people in expansive – as opposed to contracted – postures, even if we don't consciously realize it.

Why Women Should Make The First Move

Posted on June 30, 2016

Bumble whitney wolfe2BUSINESS INSIDER – June 30 – In a recent interview on the Girlboss Radio podcast, Whitney Wolfe discussed what motivated her to found Bumble, a dating app where only women can initiate the first move. On Match.com only ~18% of emails between straight women and straight men are initiated by women. In the most recent "Singles in America" survey, ~90% of men said they're comfortable with a woman asking them out. According to a recent OkCupid study, women who make the first move can wind up with more attractive partners than women who wait for men to ask them out. That's because women generally message men who are five points more attractive than they are, while they typically receive messages from men who are seven points less attractive.
