80% of Matchmakers Now Offer Coaching

Posted on May 11, 2020

Matchmakers coronavirusNEW YORK TIMES – May 8 – Matchmakers are seeing higher demand for advice and coaching services now that drinks and dinner are on hold. Lisa Clampitt is a founder and president of the Matchmaking Institute, which holds conferences and provides training for industry professionals, said ~80% of matchmakers now offer coaching services. Dating hasn't decreased because of the coronavirus. It has actually increased. But the method has shifted online. Maria Avgitidis, a fourth-generation matchmaker in Manhattan who has set up 3,5K first dates and said she is responsible for ~ 200 marriages, ramped up the coaching part of her business, Agape Match, in 2018. Coaching clients, who pay $10K and up for a program called "Dating Refresh," get four months of help curating their online profiles and winnowing suitors, plus a makeover and photo shoot. "Coaching is where we've become quite innovative," she said. "People have questions on how to navigate dating during quarantine, and we've made ourselves available to answer those questions." This happens through a free weekly webinar called "Ask a Matchmaker Live." She is also hosting group coaching programs; $350 buys a five-session package. Janis Spindel, the founder of Serious Matchmaking, also arranges dates through Zoom and FaceTime.

Elite Matchmakers Share Their Vetting Process

Posted on July 22, 2019

Berkeleyinternational logo sep 16BUSINESS INSIDER – July 20 – Elite matchmakers shared their vetting process for high-net-worth clients as part of Business Insider's "Dating Like a Millionaire" series. Two of the matchmakers said they make house calls to get a better feel for a millionaire's lifestyle and personality. An organized home can indicate that the owner is a grown-up, whereas a messy home can be a red flag. "You can tell a lot from a person by looking through a keyhole," said Mairead Molloy of Berkeley International, who is based in London. Berkeley's pricing starts from £15K and goes up to £60K for private headhunting, with a year of unlimited introductions. Highly tailored packages can run up to £100K. Mother-daughter matchmaking duo Janis and Carly Spindel of Janis Spindel Serious Matchmaking Inc. in New York City also make house calls. They said: "We go in the fridge, their medicine cabinets, and their closets."

Men Are Willing To Pay $250,000 For Love

Posted on January 2, 2013

Heart moneyTODAY – Dec 30 – Janis Spindel, an internationally known traveling “yenta,” boasts 994 marriages to her credit. Her fee ($100K – $250) buys 12 introductions over a 12-month period, with no guarantee that Cupid will strike. The fee pays for her time, and the steeper the price, the more face time with her each thoroughbred gets. ~1,500 independent matchmakers operate in the U.S. With ~17K men and 32K women in her database of singles, the economy has done little to slow down Spindel and her competitors. Spindel has seen one change since the recession started in 2008: more men are asking to barter high-end items in order to use her services to find love. She’s been offered town homes, cars and, most recently, a pink gold Rolex watch to help bring the cost down, as they want to preserve their cash but are still willing to pay for finding a wife. Women must submit a 2,500-word bio, read her two books, fill out a questionnaire and join a $250 meet-and-greet. She also charges $1K for a 30-minute one-on-one session for women who want more guidance.

Modern Dating Offers Innovative Ways To Meet New People

Posted on February 6, 2012

Moderndating_main_image--jpgSOUTH UNIVERSITY – Feb 5 – Janis Spindel of Serious Matchmaking, says her business has gone up by 62% since shows such as Bravo’s The Millionaire Matchmaker have made her matchmaking services better known. Spindel goes to breakfast, lunch, or dinner every day of the week with a different potential client. She takes note of behaviors such as good eye contact. Spindel’s clients are all men, ranging in age from 27 to 78 years old. She describes them as very well-educated, upscale, professional, awesome men. In order to find matches for her clients, Spindel accepts applications through her website from women hoping to meet them. The women need to be well-educated, well-spoken, intellectually stimulating, grounded, and must follow a healthy lifestyle. Having things in common is also an important part of a successful match. Shannon Smith, a representative from Plenty of Fish (POF), says the site’s matching system is based on a combination of the information members enter into their profile and their user behavior. “If they have specified that they are looking for blondes, but search for brunettes, they will get matched with brunettes,” Smith says. “If a user will not date a smoker, they will not see smokers in their matches. POF has ~38M users worldwide. POF also has a mobile app. “Currently, upwards of 60% of our users under the age of 40 in the US access the site via mobile device", Smith says.
