VCs’ Are Positive About Online Dating Turning Into Attractive Investment

Posted on February 15, 2014

FundingUNQUOTE – Feb 14 – Europe's online dating market has not enjoyed a satisfying relationship with venture capital. Venture firms initially poured capital into basic dating sites before moving towards more social media-based offerings, such as 360 Capital Partners' €2M investment in Smartdate, a Facebook-integrated dating platform, in 2010. Now the sector has expanded into dating apps. "The winner will be freemium and mobile", says Pavel Bogdanov, a partner at Almaz Capital, a backer of Estonia-based social dating site Flirtic. Europe's venture firms may already be testing the waters. Paua Ventures, Astutia Ventures and IBB Beteiligungsgesellschaft has invested in German social discovery and dating app mbrace. "In five years, dating could be changed again by the popularity of wearables", says Bogdanov.

SmartDate Employees Stiffed, VC Rails Against CEO

Posted on November 24, 2011

Smartdate logo newOPW – Nov 24 – The proverbial s*t is hitting the fan at TechCrunch.fr.

– Francois Tison, General Partner at 360 Capital Partners
“Risk and failure are part of our business. In most failures, we can look between shareholders and say "we tried, we did everything we could, we saved what we could." Some failures leave a more bitter taste. It (SmartDate) clearly belongs to the second category. "

SmartDate is accused of loading the site with fakesters.Contractors and employees have not been paid, apparently.

– Former Employee
He (CEO, Fabrice LeParc) lied to us, forced to use unethical techniques, contradicted himself constantly, and pushed us to lie providers ("Yes, be patient, the bank transfer has been done …").

Smartdate Forced To Shut Down

Posted on November 22, 2011

Smartdate logo newTECH CRUNCH FRANCE – Nov 21 – Why is the online dating site Smartdate launched in 2010 about to close? Not enough capital, its founder Fabrice Le Parc explains. Open in 6 languages after a successful fund-raising campaign, the second round started beginning of the summer 2011 did not work. Forced to shut down servers and dismiss all his employees, Fabrice Le Parc reckons that they should have searched for investors earlier in the process.

Smartdate Survey Sheds Light On Transatlantic Love

Posted on January 27, 2011

Smartdate logo new PR WEB – Jan 25 – French dating site Smartdate conducted a survey with 7,400 of its French and American members to uncover the mystery of the French-American love story. Italians, it seems, are a major part of this story as well. Here are the results: If you asked a French single, which “nationality would you rather date?”, the answer would be Italian (39%) and then American (37%). The French-American love story is reciprocal as French men are also a close second for American ladies (35%) behind the Italians – again (38%), while French women rank first (42%) for American men. Pop culture clichés seem to be most influential is these beliefs. FULL ARTICLE @ PR WEB

BBC London, Joanne Good Radio Show With Dr. Gonzaga (eHarmony) And Fabrice LeParc (SmartDate)

Posted on April 22, 2010

Gian gonzaga and fabrice le parc BBC RADIO – Apr 16 – 10 years ago very few people ever confessed to online dating and now 1 in 5 people meet online. But what actually goes into finding the perfect partner? Dr. Gonzaga is part of the team of scientists working on research for eHarmony.

Joanne: Do you actually work in a laboratory?
Dr. Gonzaga: I do. We have a lab space downstairs where we bring in couples who are engaged or married and we interview them about their relationship to figure out what makes their relationship work, what makes them strong and satisfied.

Joanne: What do you think are the most important things for making a long term relationship work?
Dr. Gonzaga: One of the most important things is sharing fundamental personality characteristics, values and interests.

Joanne: You use 29 dimensions of compatibility at eHarmony?
Dr. Gonzaga: That’s correct. The happiest couples tend to share 29 dimensions much more often than less happy couples do. The 29 dimensions include things like religion, height, and body language, energy level, etc?

Joanne: It  seems that there is not quite so much emphasis on physical looks.
Dr. Gonzaga: You also have to feel that connection, that spark, that attraction to someone  but it’s very hard to figure out what each individual person is attracted to because everybody is different.

Joanne: How many matches are given to each person?
Dr. Gonzaga: We give people 2, 3 or 4 matches per day.

Who doesn’t want a long term relationship but just wants a bit of fun? Who doesn’t want to sit and fill in page after page after page of questions? Somebody who doesn’t want to do that is Fabrice LeParc from Smartdate.com.

Joanne: Fabrice, why are people single?
Fabrice: I think people are being a little too demanding nowadays. And also I don’t think they rely enough on  their social environment. At Smartdate, we’re trying to reinvent the way people date online.

Joanne: So you’re saying that many people know people they can be attracted to, they just haven’t bothered looking at them?
Fabrice: Yes. Smartdate is a tool that allows you to search through all the social networks you already have.

Joanne: No wonder it’s called Smart. Half the work has been done for you. The previous guest, we were talking to from eHarmony, was saying that too much attention is placed on looks. But when I look at your website, it is very aesthetically pleasing and there are no gargoyles and there's very beautiful people on it.
Fabrice: Let’s face it. People want to look at pictures and if you’re in a bar you’re going to be attracted to looks. Looks matter and pictures matter. We put together a clever tool called SmartSearch. This is exactly what Amazon.com does for books.

Joanne: Smartdate is in 6 languages, is that right? So it’s truly global.
Fabrice: Yes, we’re just launching now. You don’t need to meet a neighbor to be happy, you can also talk to somebody who happens to be in England right now and maybe you get along and you get on the phone…

How Big Is The Facebook Economy?

Posted on March 10, 2010

A-fistful-of-cash-001 GUARDIAN.CO.UK – Mar 10 - Investors are pumping more and more money into web services that are heavily reliant on Facebook. Smartdate received $2.2m from investors to try and build its idea of using Facebook data as the basis of a matchmaking service. We know from a number of reports and internal estimates that Facebook itself is due to post somewhere upwards of $1bn in revenue for 2010. How many companies rely on Facebook to keep themselves going? The conservative estimate must stretch into several billions of dollars worth of business at least. Back in November, Electronic Arts bought social gaming site Playfish, in a deal worth ~$275m, meanwhile Zynga, another developer of popular games has already taken more than $200m of venture capital. Other companies making apps include Slide, Mindjolt and FriendFeed (bought by Facebook for ~$50m).
