Online Dating Meets Cybersex

Posted on April 30, 2005

Wired_news_2 WIRED — Apr 29 — Would you have cybersex with someone you met through an online dating site? Would you go on a date with someone you met through a cybersex chat room? HighJoy is betting that you will.  Lynn Borne, the director of marketing, asked me to hold the Doc Johnson iVibe Rabbit while he walked me through the chat client and the online control panel for the toy. Amir Vatan, the CEO, retreated to his office so he could be on the other end of my virgin HighJoy chat. Amir describes the company as something between AdultFriendFinder and Match.com. "Just online dating? Or online dating and these tools?" he says, gesturing to the array of vibrators on the conference table. He sees HighJoy as the logical next step for those who enjoy making connections online. I suspect the first wave of members will sign on for the promise of virtual sex and the hope of hooking up in person. I don't see the eHarmony crowd migrating to HighJoy, but fans of SuicideGirls, Nerve and PalTalk's adult communities will probably feel right at home.

Mark Brooks: The next logical step?  Your comments please :-)  ?

Concerns About Florida Online Dating Bill

Posted on April 30, 2005

Netcoalition_1PRNEWSWIRE — Apr 26 — America's leading internet and technology firms and trade associations expressed deep reservations about the Florida bill that would impose government oversight on online dating and require criminal background checks or disclosures for users of online dating services. In a letter to the Florida legislature, the group noted that the bill would impose new liabilities and responsibilities upon not only Internet dating sites, but on an almost limitless array of Internet sites and services and has the potential to create a false sense of security for users.  Although there have been very few, if any, instances of online dating related crimes in Florida, the legislation would require background checks or disclosures that the services do not screen customers.  "Consumers are in the best position to determine which services provide them with the most security and comfort," concluded Netcoalition spokesperson Erickson, "not the government."  NetCoalition serves as the public policy voice for: AeA, Amazon, AOL, Association for Competitive Technology, CareerBuilder, eBay, eHarmony, Electronic Retailing Association, FriendFinder, Google, IdeaOasis, Information Technology Association of America, Internet Alliance, Internet Commerce Coalition, Lavalife, Match.com, Microsoft, MyEMatch.com, NetChoice, ProfileDoctor, Singles Industry Trade Association, Spark Networks, TechNet, The Right One, Trufina, Userplane, U.S. Internet Service Provider Association, VeriSign, Yahoo!

Mark Brooks: Weighty opposition to the background checks legislation.

Posted on April 29, 2005

Truedater_1BUSINESS WIRE –Apr 26 — TrueDater provides online daters with the ability to read or review the truthfulness of people's dating profiles.  Users were asked what qualities online daters exaggerate or lie about most often. Marital status 13%.  Female voters…1. general physical appearance 36%, 2. weight 19%, 3. age 16%.

The Jewish Mother Stereotype: Fact or Fiction?

Posted on April 22, 2005

Logo_spark_1PRNEWSWIRE — Apr 18 — Are Jewish mothers really that meddlesome when it comes to dating? According to a JDate poll, approximately half, of the over 600, respondents said, "yes, they are." Of those who answered, "yes," half said they found her behavior endearing while the other half wished she would stop.  In honor of Jewish mothers, everywhere, JDate is searching for 'JDate Mom of the Year.' From now through April 30, 2005, mothers of JDate members can visit JDate.com to enter to win dinner for three (for mom, her son or daughter and his or her JDate).

Mark Brooks: JDate owns the Jewish focused online dating market.  JewishFriendFinder is a competitor.  Anyone know of any others?

Dating in the City

Posted on April 20, 2005

GREATER MILWAUKIE TODAY — Apr 15 — Most have heard of the concept of "speed dating." The FastDater process consists of three minute "dates." From there, participants are able to rate and select whom they’d like to date again. If a match is made, via e-mail the pair is contacted for further communication.  I subscribed to eHarmony.com, Match.com and AmericanSingles.com. The matches that had been made for me by the futuristic, ultra complex eHarmony.com computer were not exactly what I was looking for.  Says a DJ user,"I do believe many people misrepresent themselves and embellish on their looks, but I would do it again. In fact, quite a few couples that have used my DJ service met online and got married. Go figure."  Milwaukee resident Heather Lane met her husband, Anthony, through Match.com. "Match.com was recommended by friends. I went into it with an open attitude and by the third date, I met him.  It was fun and I’m definitely happy, he’s a great guy."

Mark Brooks: PreDating is still the leading spee dating company.  I helped Cupid tie the knot with them last year.  Hurrydate and 8 Minute Dating follow on.

Finding a Second Act on the Internet

Posted on April 12, 2005

Jdate_dating_success_photoNY TIMES — Apr 12 — Hani joined JDate where she met David, a fellow graduate of Lafayette High School, class of '59. Her email,"David, is that you?"  According to Nielsen/Net Ratings, the number of online dating site users 55 or older rose 19% in the last year.  "As older folks and baby boomers become increasingly Internet-savvy, a lot of them are turning to online dating to find both romance and companionship," said Kristin Kelly, Match.com, whose 50-plus membership has tripled since 2000.  "It's one of our fastest-growing segments," said Andrew Conru, CEO of FriendFinder, which operates SeniorFriendFinder with 400,000 members.  FULL ARTICLE @ NY TIMES

Mark Brooks: My mother is learning to use a computer now, at 72.  She's kicking it's ass at Scrabble.

AdvancedTele.com Purchases Spark Network Services

Posted on April 4, 2005

Spark_network_servicesPRWEB — Apr 4 — AdvancedTele.com has purchased Spark Network Services.  Spark is a division of Infinity Broadcasting. AdvancedTele.com has been active in the newspaper voice personals business for over a decade. By purchasing Spark Network Services, it obtains over 400 voice personals accounts in the radio industry.  It will operate Spark's call center in Chicago and its automated telemarketing IVR system.  Spark Network Services (www.sparkns.com) most popular product is the MatchLink system, the leading interactive computer dating service used by radio and television stations in the US and Canada.  Its dating services have served over two million members since its inception in 1994.  RELEASE @ PRWEB

Mark Brooks: Spark who?  What kind of tradename search did Spark Networks (Matchnet) do to miss Spark Network Services!?  Yikes.  Spark (the one that was just acquired by Advanced Tele) was founded by a couple of Northwestern University professors in the mid 1990's as a newspaper voice personals company that evolved into online dating with webfriends.com.  Webfriends was sold to Match.com.  Spark (the one that was just acquired by Advanced Tele) now operates http://www.matchlink.com and http://www.planetultimate.com.

Keeping Online Daters Honest

Posted on April 4, 2005

TruedaterWIRED — Apr 1 — TrueDater, not to be confused with True.com, is a database of reviews written by people who met through online personals. The goal here is not to rate (or berate) the person, but to compare how he or she matched the profile that got your attention. Does she look like her pictures? Is he really 6 feet tall?  Currently, you can read and submit reviews for members of Match.com, JDate and AmericanSingles.com. To post a review, you indicate which dating site they belong to and enter their profile ID. Rate them with a "yes" (they tell the truth in their profiles) or a "no," and add a few words of explanation.

Mark Brooks: Why do they limit to Match and Spark I wonder?
