India’s Dating Apps Struggle to Grow as Investors Stay Cautious

Posted on July 28, 2025

India's Dating Apps Struggle to Grow as Investors Stay CautiousSTORYBOARD 18 – India's dating app market has raised $21M so far, with funding peaking in 2015 and picking up slowly since 2020. But investors remain careful due to high user dropout rates, expensive marketing costs, and tough competition from global giants like Tinder and Bumble. Only 1% of users pay for premium features, and most apps lose users quickly after sign-up. Local players like TrulyMadly, Juleo, Flutrr are trying new ideas like meme-based matching and offline events to attract Gen Z.

Indian Tech Companies Challenge Google’s Billing Policy

Posted on June 5, 2023

Google lawsuitINC42 – Several Indian tech companies and startups, including Unacademy, Kuku FM, Truly Madly, and QuackQuack, have filed petitions in the Madras High Court to challenge Google's billing policy. Google has been sending notices to digital startups, requiring them to adopt its billing policy or face removal from the Play Store. The Madras High Court will hear the matter on June 8, and it is expected that more than a dozen Indian tech companies will challenge Google's notice in the next ten days. The dispute stems from Google's user-choice billing system, which would charge a commission of 11-26% on in-app purchases, significantly impacting the profits of these startups. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) previously directed Google not to restrict app developers from using third-party billing or payment processing services, and it imposed a penalty of INR 1,337.76 Cr on Google for anti-competitive practices.

TrulyMadly Attracted 11M Users

Posted on September 5, 2022

Trulymadly logo for social mediaINC42 – TrulyMadly claims to be an Indian leading serious dating app. 54% of its new users and 42% of its revenue come from Tier 2 and Tier 3 locations. The dating services sector in India is estimated to clock $387.6M in revenue in 2022. TrulyMadly was launched in Feb 2014. The app has attracted 11M registered users and targets $100M in revenue by 2026. TrulyMadly has a trust score ranging from 0-100% which ensures that the profiles are not fake. The app authenticates them by verifying user data, including name, gender, age, relationship status, education, profession, and photo. The higher the trust score, the better the profile visibility. The company has adopted a freemium model and claims that 3-3.5% of its non-paying users turn into paid members after 30 days. Recently, the app has created TM Cafe, a video chat for paid members, where users can interact with others through audio/video calls. The call automatically disconnects at the 90th second, and users can decide whether they want to match. The platform raised two rounds of funding. The first was $1.1M in pre-Series and in April 2021, another $2.1M was raised. The company is now preparing for overseas expansion.

CEO of TrulyMadly: “Global Apps Are Not Building Apps for Real India”

Posted on December 7, 2021

TrulyMadly Snehil KhanorLIVEMINT – Snehil Khanor, CEO and co-founder of TrulyMadly, who drives the startup's marketing function, explains why his platform is getting traction in smaller towns. He says the pandemic did not impact the business of serious dating apps. In fact, it further fuelled the need for having a serious, long-term partner because you were confined to your home. Women are the drivers of offline meetings. TrulyMadly targets singles 26+ . Only those people who are looking for something serious get matches. The app blocks anybody who is not a serious seeker. "International players are not building an app for real India", he says. "They are just pushing the same product that they have built for the world, especially, for the West. It is working for tier-I, but it will never work for tier-II and tier-III towns."

Google logoBUSINESS-STANDARD – Mar 18 – Google Play said on Tuesday that beginning July 1 it would slash its 30% billing fee to 15% for developers globally when they make the first $1M of their annual revenue. Apple slashed the App Store developer fee by half to 15% from January 1, 2021, under its App Store Small Business Program. While Apple said it'll reduce commission of 98% of developers, Statista later revealed that those 98% of developers accounted for just 5% of total app store revenue. Even if the commission is reduced to 15% for everybody flat it is still very high," said dating app TrulyMadly CEO and co-founder Snehil Khanor.
