Housing Costs and Smartphones Are Driving Falling Birth Rates

Posted on May 29, 2026
birth rates are falling

FINANCIAL TIMES – Birth rates are falling rapidly across the world, with fertility now below the replacement rate of 2.1 children per woman in more than two-thirds of countries. In 66 countries, the average is now closer to one child per woman than two. In some countries, the most common number of children per woman is zero. The trend is no longer limited to wealthy nations. In 2023, Mexico’s birth rate fell below that of the US for the first time, followed by countries including Brazil, Iran, Tunisia, and Sri Lanka. South Korea, one of the world’s lowest-fertility countries, recorded ~230K births in 2023, far below the UN forecast of 350K.  Researchers say the biggest shift is that fewer people are forming couples at all, rather than couples simply having fewer children. Housing costs remain a major barrier in countries like the US and UK. But studies increasingly point to smartphones and social media after birth rates dropped sharply following widespread mobile internet adoption. Researchers argue that reduced in-person socialising, rising isolation, and changing relationship dynamics are now major drivers of global demographic decline.

Posted on May 11, 2026

THE MIRAGE- A growing number of Gen Z users are moving toward voice-first dating apps that focus on conversation instead of swiping. One example is Reev, a new Australian dating app that uses voice-based profiles and short phone calls instead of traditional text chats. Users gradually unlock messaging, photos, and video calls as mutual interest develops. Reev also includes a feature that encourages users to leave short explanations instead of ghosting matches. The platform is currently being tested with students at Macquarie University, where early users say the app feels more natural and conversation-driven than photo-focused dating platforms.

BUMBLE – Bumble’s revenue fell 14% YOY to $212M in Q1 of 2026, while paying users dropped 21% from 4M to 3.2M. Despite the decline in users, the company reported stronger profitability. Net earnings rose 165% to $53M, and adjusted EBITDA increased 28% to $83M, helped by cost cuts and higher spending per paying user. Whitney Wolfe Herd said Bumble is rebuilding the app around a new AI-powered platform designed to improve matching and help users move more quickly to in-person dates. The updated experience is expected to roll out later in 2026.

College Student Sues Dating App for $750,000 for Stealing Her Videos for Ads

DEXERTO – A University of Tennessee student, Kaelyn Lunglhofer, is suing Quantum Communications for $750K, alleging her TikTok video was used without consent in ads for the dating app Meete. The ads, which promoted “friends with benefits,” used her graduation video and were geo-targeted in Knoxville, making it appear she was on the platform. She says the ad caused embarrassment and misrepresented her. The lawsuit argues unauthorized use of her likeness and deceptive marketing.
