Online Personals Watch Turns 20 Today!

Posted on June 9, 2024

Opw icon fb 2019OPW – Exactly 20 years ago, on June 9th, 2004, Online Personals Watch embarked on a journey to redefine how industry professionals stay informed about the ever-evolving world of online dating. Founded by Mark Brooks, a luminary in the online dating industry, our platform has been the go-to source for C-level executives, media professionals, and venture capitalists seeking the latest news and insights. I (Irena Brooks) became editor in 2006. Not only do we offer curated daily news summaries, CEO interviews, and leadership conferences, but we also provide a comprehensive news archive dating back to 2004. Additionally, OPW offers tailored company-specific news searches and financial analysis one-pagers. In celebration of this milestone, we're hosting a special LTR online conference on June 12th (see www.LTR.us). Join us for an exclusive event featuring esteemed speakers: Dan Ariely, author and professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University, and bestselling author; Jim Safka, former CEO of Match.com; and Daniel Salmon, partner and head of U.S. Internet at New Street Research.

Let's celebrate 20 years of informing and empowering professionals in this fascinating industry! We will also have Wall Street Journal and New York Times reporters attending, I should note. Email mark@courtlandbrooks.com if you would like to join this (free) online leadership gathering. – Irena Brooks, Editor, OPW

LinkedIn Is Becoming the New Unexpected Dating Platform

Posted on June 5, 2024

LinkedIn as a dating aappNEWSWEEK – LinkedIn is gaining attention as a potential dating app, with users reporting receiving messages from matchmakers and expressing surprise at the platform's evolving role. Despite LinkedIn's assertion that it's a professional network, some feel it's inevitable that it will be used for dating purposes. However, the blending of professional and personal interactions isn't always welcome, with studies showing a high rate of unwelcome romantic advances, particularly toward women. Other unexpected platforms, like exercise app Strava and language-learning app Duolingo, are also being used for dating.

Study Reveals Women Detect Threats in Online Dating Profiles Through Facial Features and Biographical Cues

Posted on May 24, 2024

Woman using a dating app
PSYPOST – A study in Computers in Human Behavior found that women are less likely to show interest in online dating profiles with facial features suggesting aggression (like a pronounced jawline or narrow eyes) and biographical details indicating traits such as narcissism, impulsiveness, or hostility towards women. These biographical details included language that dehumanizes or objectifies women. Typical online dating safety tips did not help women better detect these threats, highlighting the need for improved safety measures on dating platforms.
