Ross Williams: When Is The Right Time To Sell?

Ross williams2 GLOBAL PERSONALS BLOG – May 3 - It has become increasingly difficult for independently-owned dating companies to profitably and ethically acquire traffic in this marketplace, when competing with VC-backed entrants like Zoosk or IAC portfolio companies like Match, Singlesnet, Peoplemedia or OKCupid, says Ross Williams, CEO of WhiteLabelDating.com, a subsidiary of Global Personals, a software company that enables partners to set up their own branded, online dating sites.  

It is difficult to remain profitable against these companies when you manage your development, hosting, customer support, database, CRM etc in-hous. This is why many dating site operators are deciding either to sell or to move their sites to a white label platform.

But when is the right time to sell?
Quite simply – when you don’t need to. You’ll get the maximum value from your business when it’s still growing, when you’re showing profitability and you can demonstrate future growth. I see too many dating sites looking to sell when the owner is simply jumping from a sinking ship. They’ve lost and they realised it too late.

As a buyer, what do we look for in a dating site?
We look to see where we can add value and where we can eliminate overheads. Through our WhiteLabelDating.com platform, we’re able to pretty much eliminate development, hosting and customer care costs as it is shared with all our partners. We’ll also consider a talent acquisition. Most buyers will consider a buy vs build approach – up to a certain point, it makes sense for them to buy a competitor, beyond that it makes more sense to build their own proposition and steal that niche, technology or marketing strategy.

Singles365 Expands Dating Portfolio Into South African And Mature Markets

Singles365.com's network provider WhiteLabelDating.com has seen huge growth in both the South African and Mature markets. It has grown by 19% since January, with the Mature UK network also increasing by 18%.

UKRD Radio Network Partners With WhiteLabelDating.com

Ukrd WLD BLOG – UKRD Ltd, a UK radio network that operates 16 local commercial radio stations and has a portfolio of 46 websites, partners with WhiteLabelDating.com. WLD already partners with many other well-known radio stations and media companies, including Planet Rock and Bauer Radio.

Global Personals Experiences Record Growth In January

Globalpersonals.co.uk logo WLD BLOG – Feb 4 – Global Personals, the online dating company in Europe that owns platform WhiteLabelDating.com, has experienced a tremendous start to the year breaking the company record for revenue collected and new member registrations over the January period. Overall network revenues grew by 30% YOY. The General network's revenue is up 70%. Media partners who power branded dating sites on the WhiteLabelDating.com platform including Bauer Media, NatMags and The Independent, witnessed a 45% increase to registrations compared to last year. The strong start to the year was however not just confined to the UK. The South African network also had a very strong start with registrations up 43% compared to January 2010 and revenue collected up 46% over the same period.

Ross Williams: How Dating Turned up the Ideal Business Model

Ross williams money week MONEY WEEK – Dec 23 – In 1999 Ross Wiliams began to design and build websites for small firms based around Plymouth University. His firm, Rawnet, grew fast and he took on his first employee while still at university and in a couple of years he had 20 staff. The only problem with the business was that "it wasn't profitable". Rawnet had annual sales of £2M, but was "living from project to project". So in 2003, he decided to set up a dating website. He had to finance the new site, Singles365.com, with credit cards. He decided to make the software program that Singles365.com used available to competitors – for a price. The service, Whitelabeldating.com, was "a platform for brands and individuals to power their own dating sites". Global Personals – the holding company for his dating services – was soon making more than Rawnet. Williams sold his controlling stake in Rawnet to a senior employee and decided to concentrate on dating. In the last three years more than 5,000 online dating sites around the world have partnered with Global Personals. Global Personals now employs 80 staff and generates annual sales of £20M.

7 Cities, 9 Flights, 2 Week North American Tour

Plane OPW – Nov 10 – I started my tour by jetting off to London to keynote at the White Label Dating / Global Personals annual partner conference. It was fascinating getting the inside-track on the company, attending their two day conference. They've had a tough year beating off scammers, and then elevating their conversion factors to new highs. They've done some especially innovative work turning their customer service department into a profit center. Next, Toronto, to meet with Justin and Annabelle of Fastlife.com. I paid Noel at Avid Life Media. The Toronto IDEA soiree went very well. In L.A. a visit with Spark Networks, and then eHarmony to meet the CEO and tour the eHarmony Labs. Absolutely fascinating!  Its so nice to see some true primary research coming from an internet matchmaking company. I ran a little IDEA soiree in L.A. A quick trip to Palm Springs next, to pay Conciant a visit. They have an interesting offering in the works for idating companies. San Francisco next, to visit Zoosk. I first met Jeff at iDate Miami 2004. He was one of the best speakers the conference has ever had the pleasure of hosting. In Dallas, Mandy is driving Match.com to new heights. $106 million last quarter. I caught up with Trish from TRUE. It will be a nice acquisition target in a year or so. – Mark Brooks
