Lycos (and Matchmaker) Sold to Korean Company for $105 million

10/6–Daum Communications, a Korean Internet company has purchased Lycos Inc ~ $105 million. Includes the Lycos.com site as well as Lycos1 sites wired.com, tripod.com, angelfire.com, matchmaker.com, quote.com and hotbot.com. Spanish telecom and Internet company Terra bought Lycos in 2000 for $12.5 billion in stock.

But Meetup, which has helped more than 30,000 groups organize meetups remains virtually without competition. Meetup has signed up two million users who rely on it to help find people with similar political or business interests or hobbies. Meetup, based in New York, was created in 2002 and attracted financial backing from Draper Fisher Jurvetson and eBay’s founder, Pierre M. Omidyar, among others. NY TIMES
