Apr 13 — I'm starting a little list of dating software and dating service providers for those who are considering starting their own dating site or switching services.
Dating Software – Aewebworks, Asp.net Dating, Built2go, DateApp, Datetopia, Dating.lt, Datingsoft, Datingsoftwares, Datingpro, DatingSoftware.biz, E-classifieds, Emeeting, G-Dating, Mojopersonals, Osdate, Scorpio Dating, Silver, Skadate, Vldpersonals, Webscribble
Dating Services – Dating Site Builder, Spring Street Networks (owned by Friendfinder), Vintacom / Relationship Exchange
Social Network Software – Alstrasoft, Sparta
This list will appear under 'Handy Little Lists' on the left bar, for future reference. Please add your comments if you have had experience with any of these. – Mark Brooks

Had bad luck with Aewebworks and Mojopersonals. Of the the dating software, osDate is the way to go.
For Social Network Software, I would go with Sparta.
http://www.secretcashcard.com is the perfect complement for a dating site, providing total privacy with a “Virtual cash payment solution”, instant issue anonymous Debit MasterCard integrated with web based anonymous browser and eraser.
Jerry Klein, CEO, Secret Cash Card
Please add to your list http://webmaster.dating.lt/ . This is Lithuanian based company specializing in Baltic states countries.
Custom coding is the way to go, saves time and a TON of money.
Are any of these software packages scalable? It is important to know because if you have success, big websites might have problems when using closed source-cheap-software-systems without capability for adding additional servers to the cluster to serve millions of page views per day. Successful social networks have tens of millions of page views per day.
I would tend towards the hosted services. The software is only half the story, if that. You can buy software and set up a great site…then what? Have you budgeted for the $100k it will take to seed your community to a level that people actually want to pay…and it starts converting for you? You’re essentially selling people to people. Hosted services such as Vintacom and World Dating Partners put people on the shelves for you. They look after customer service and deal with serving the site. You then look after the fun part. Developing the character of your site and getting the word out. Software is the expensive option in the short term. Some hosted services allow you to build your database of users and then pull them away into your own community when you feel you are beyond critical mass. This is the smart way to go. You have the best of both worlds with this scenario. Your site will convert from an early stage and you can pull away and do your own thing when you’re ready.
I see tiny sites touting that they are the ‘fastest growing’ and/or ‘biggest.’ Please be wary of taking this approach. It’s not good for the industry…unless you really are the biggest, best and fastest growing, of course 😉 You will only make money in the long term if you have happy customers who rave about your service.

Mark, what you said makes sense. Why, then, would anyone consider buying an off-the-shelf dating s/w package?
If you need “the $100k it will take to seed your community to a level that people actually want to pay” it would seem foolhardy (to the extreme) to think a $499 package is going to work for you. Imagine blowing $100k in marketing to a $499 site!
As absix said, “Custom coding is the way to go, saves time and a TON of money.”
It is also about managing growth (if you can get it), being scalable, adding feature sets, and any number of other things you need to make your business work. If your database can’t handle the traffic or do what your market requires to get them to part with their hard-earned money, what’s the point?
Commensurate with that, of course, is paying all these talented programmers to do it. Good ones don’t come cheap.
Thinking you are going to get a quick headstart in the online dating space by paying $199 or $299 or $499 for an off-the-shelf dating s/w package is foolhardy.
The bottom line: if your goal is to take a splice of the profits in online dating, you may as well burn your money. You can’t get rich anymore by getting into online dating.
This is 2006, not 1999. It’s too late. Those of us in the business (who have made it) have honed our skills over the years and are flush with cash and resources; basically, we have this thing down to a fine art.
I’m not saying this as an established company trying to dissuade new competitors; I am just being frank. You’ll lose your shirt.
There are still some worthy niches left, but by and large I’d have to agree. Starting an online dating site is more sexy than starting a nightclub and more difficult to bring to profitability these days. This is a game of size…or focus. Small, new entrants need to focus on a niche, or have a stack of cash. Bear in mind that the big dating sites are improving search functionality which will wash away some of the value/attractiveness of niche dating sites in time.
Then there’s social networking. I believe this will follow the same trajectory as dating sites. More and more niches, unique functionality, angles etc.
Business networking is still wide open. Ryze, Linkedin, Spoke, Zerodegrees, and some real world networking groups. Plaxo? There’s still oppportunity in this arena I think.

There are more than 900 “Online Dating & Social Networking Sites” at the United States and Canada, but top 10 Online Dating sites have 80%/85% of actual market (estimated). If you add net paid subscribers of all U.S. dating sites, perhaps the total is less than 5 million!!!
Although it is from NOV 2003, there is an interesting PowerPoint presentation about how the U.S. MARKET OPPORTUNITY REMAINS ENORMOUS. (page 6)
http://media.corporate-ir.net/media_files/irol/11/111999/presentations/IAC_Personals.pdf
What dating sites are doing / will do to court the other U.S. 80 million singles not seriously dating online?
They need to offer GREAT INNOVATIONS, but …. they will definitively come from new discoveries on Theories of Romantic Relationships Development.
– The Online Dating Industry and Dating Sites manage huge databases, they URGENTLY need more power calculation and more precise/reliable matching techniques, like: “here you have a list of 48 persons most compatible in a 10 million prospects database”.

Gentlemen,
We’ve had this discussion awhile ago if I’m not mistaken. My personal experience with SweetDuet.net showed that whatever you spend on software the marketing budget and s strategy is a cornerstone.
Mark, you underestimate the initial marketing budget some 20 to 40 times.
Do the math, what can $100K get you? Obviously, the conversion at the start-up site will be well below standard 10%-10% on both legs of the conversion. So overall, a new site can only pray for 0.25% to 0.5% total conversion.
Essentially important to take into consideration the DISECONOMY of Internet.
The more traffic you want, the more you have to pay per click.
One can only start with $0.50 per click to get minimal visibility. It’s not even a volume but rather a joke.
The natural search is hard to reach and may take forever. Affiliates are a weak help as well.
Free sites have enjoyed the first mover’s advantage some time ago. But it’s gone as well.
So what do we have left?
Certainly ASP, but it’s not a guarantee by any mean and will require a marketing budget of a decent size as well.
In a nutshell, for those who want to get reach in the dating industry: you can do it if
a. You last name is Diller or
b. If you have $2 to $5 mln to burn just to make it to the break even point.
c. You invent a new niche overlooked by now.
Well said, Alexander!
Funny that this conversation took place on the date we released `SkaDate Prime`. With this version we offer both hosted and software solution – things that are being discussed here. SkaDate is very flexible and perfect for niche site startups.
SkaDate also offers custom dating website development together with complete technical background management. Contact us for more details.
Emil, I still don’t understand what makes Kyrgyzstan a playground for dating software. Did you guys, split up with AEDating? It seems that you and Anton just mimic their stance.
You know better than any1 else, that the product you and other dating software providers sell is not going to fly. No way!
There is a bunch of reasons for it such as:
– lack of the market requirement understanding among your clients. They have no clue what it will take to get traffic once they get the site.
– internal limitations of asp+MySQL. It can’t handle the traffic once it crosses the threshold. Or they’ll have to multiply servers like crazy and slow down all the processes till it hits the timeout. Obviously, u tell them u have done all the possible load tests. Yeh, sure 🙂 On which DB? How many fields, u said?
– even the initial stage of the system deployment will cost a fortune to your clients unless u, guys, work for a non-profit organization and will handle all the calls for free.
To make the long story short, I was in your shoes in Feb.2004, when I decided to shelf the software that was and still is working better than anything available on the market. The main reason was that selling something to the people that is not going to make them any good is not just unethical, but considered to be a huge sin.
How long can you make money making other people losing $$$. Well, I’d guess, it’s not gonna take long till they finally get it.
I was approached by a dozen of companies asking to sell the software includng front and back office based on a proprietory technology and marketing. I convinced them to let me review they business plans and work out the the recommendations.
Once they got the picture, they left to look for $$$ for the marketing and that was the end of the story. Do I have regrets?
Not at all. I sleep well at night. And u?
Thanks, Alexander, for your insightful post.
A little correction, PHP+MySQL is a SkaDate backend, and it’s surely not the technology you choose for a big site planning to grow to millions of members.
I wouldn’t recommend to believe bogus “8 millions profiles tested” stories every single vendor shouts about – MySQL is wrong database platform for this. Nonetheless, SkaDate proved to feel well during a test of 500K profiles (1000 online) on a P4 HT 3.06 GHz server with 4Gb RAM. This members database is ridiculously small for a next match.com yet it’s great for a niche site. Do you think it’s possible to profit having 500K members on a carefully chosen niche site?
Just as I said above, SkaDate is perfect for _niche_ dating sites, this seems to be the only way to make money for limited budget startups nowadays.
Nevertheless, we have a complete pack of services for big sites. This is a talk of completely different technologies, servers configuration, tech. maintenance, etc…
As you noticed, we split with aedating but you are wrong to suppose that we mimic their way of doing business. There were enough strong reasons to split, and we are pretty much different in our approach. Neither do we say that we sell “the software that was and still is working better than anything available on the market” (these words alone wisper to run away). We prefer to wait for the customers come and say.
Check out our pricing (http://www.skadate.com/prices.php) and you’ll see what kind of co-operation we are interested in rather than plain software selling.
By the way, we are not know-it-alls and we don’t review our customers business plans. Instead, we concentrate on our work. Because there’s still huge potential in dating market in spite of what old-timers or losers say. We just do our work, providing flexible and stable software and a number of value-added services. But of course, since we are interested in our customers success, we’re about to open our own marketing advice service (let me know if you want to participate. I’m serious). It’s going to be included in our services set because what we are about is both profiting and sleeping well at night. I know it’s no fun in dealing with bottom-feeders, e.g. clueless people reading romantic stories and multi-milllion stats from big players. SkaDate launch was a turning point for me. The difference is that we support people and now are also going to _educate_ them rather than scaring off. Other vendors are often find it tough to even fix bugs in their own software from what I heard.
I am very excited about what we do now. You can check what SkaDate GM has to say about dating software market with SkaDate Prime release, he speaks about bloody well similar problems that you identify. http://www.skalfa.com/press/projects/skadate-prime-%e2%80%93-new-release-from-online-dating-software-powerhouse.html
Thanks, this is a truly interesting talk taking place here on OPW.

You spelled ottawa wrong in your presentation.
WDP is nothing more then a glorified affiliate program. You can spend years building up a huge site, but because you don’t own the database your site is effectively worth nothing.
If you are going to be an affiliate it is far easier making money off other sites via pay per email, something that was totally left out of your comparison chart.
Great expectations pays $15/email, true.com americansingles etc pay $4.25 an email, jdate $6.00 email and a bunch of other sites at $3.00+
Seems that everyone is trying to copy the relationship exchange. RE had its day but it seems to be dieing, all their sites are losing a LOT of traffic, and they just can’t compete with sites that are tailored to a demographic and have thier own database, servers etc
Markus, man, u r right 1000%.
Emil, your feedback is very serious and impressive. Though I still don’t believe that what you are doing is the way to go, but I’m open for a discussion to see if I can be at help. You can reach me at Alexander.Shetinin@duetnetwork.com
In terms of “better than anything available on the market”, man, if you only knew how much time and money we spent digging into psychology of users depending on age and sex, how much efforts we spent on usability polishing. A team of 6 psycology PhD’s from the York University has been doing this work for us for 6 months. And then all these findings were integrated into the technology of SweetDuet.net. And that’s just one of many things that have been done.
The site was flying fast, increadably user-friendly and flexible at all levels. On top of everything, we developed an imbedded CRM automatically responsive to users’ behavior patterns.
A white-label was developed within the SweetDuet.net project as well, a set of sites hooked to a single DB. Each of the sites could be deployed with an individually branded look-and-feel or as a part of the “parent” site. We were probably the 3rd chronologically after RelationshipExchange and SpringStreet.
I read the document, you list only a single adult site as doing payout per email. I hadn’t realized you broke out pay per registration/email which is the same thing. At any rate the numbers quoted for pay per registration are way off. http://www.cj.com and http://www.azoogleads.com will give you the proper numbers.
Your program may work now in verticales with little competition, but in the long run smart affiliates will just create their own free sites and then try and upsell those customers to bigger paying sites. The bigger paying sites will squeeze out Application service providers as they can invest heavilly into figuring out how to get higher conversion rates out of their specific demographic.
Robert, your “4.250 sites all making money” makes everybody laugh.
hi Mark,
Being the first and oldest white label solution provider I have watched this particular industry grow and blossom into what I would consider to be one of the most advanced affiliate products available.
Unlike many other areas of the internet who still do not recognise the value of white label solutions the dating industry has thrived on it.
There are two very good solutions in the UK alone with WDP and Dating-Central.com with a handful in the US.
One interesting point to mention to the notes above are the problems of setting up the affiliate program itself. The arguments for cost savings and database design for the dating sites are simply passed along the line to the white label provider.
We have seen many ME2 providers offering excellent white label solutions with no database to power the sites.
In defence of Robert, I would like to draw a line between a white label affiliate program and a service provider which we both are.
RE has it’s limitations, single email signup across their networks being the weakest element.
Our services are wholly different. Back in 1999 we decided to develop an application which would fit any country, any niche, any age range to circumvent the bigger providers at the time. Our partners offer solutions on a local basis, something the bigger boys will not consider big enough to waste time on. SMART webmasters do not think of short term gain via email payouts. SMART webmasters look at long term payouts.
You also have to consider the user. They know of the bigger friendfinder/match sites but that does not result in a drop in interest in local sites catering to their needs.
I have nothing against free services such as POF but I do consider them to be tired attempts at building a DB for sale to the bigger boys. Is this long term?
If someone wants to start a dating business that goes beyond existing shelf products and thinks custom coding is the way to go, then I suggest to prepare a minimum of 100k upwards for software development, 6-12 months of work only to reach the size of existing shelf products (depending on the group size of efficiently working programmers) and another 6-12 month to reach the same stability in live usage (with all 3 amounts above being conservatively calculated and employing local programmers and not utilizing any offshore programming services).
Mark, I appreciate all that you have in this long BLOG forum about online dating industry. The only problem is that this completely turns away from the subject of Ultimate List of Dating Software and Services and totally focuses on two companies. I am a consumer that will make it in the online dating industry because I have found that new idea. The problem is that your article does not focus on the top companies that provide software to the industry but is an argument between three parties. The true question is who does provide the ultimate software in the industry and is based in the good old USA? Or does this not exist and is my only choice to build it from scratch?
can someone please tell me if Sparta Social networks are still in business?
We are looking for a social network similar to sparta. I there is any developer out there with ideas, we are happy to discuss a joint venture in funding such a software.
hi guys,
I have a query and I wonder if some of you can help me.
I can looking for geographical software at the moment for longitude and latitude which drills down to country, region and city. I currently have software but it is rubbish.
If you recommend where I could purchase good robust db with correct information I would appreciate it.
Best Regards,
Patrick
Hi Everyone,
I read these comments with interest although not so thoroughly that I shouldn’t apologise in advance for misquoting points I have seen earlier.
I am not sure it did go off topic when discussing affiliating with existing companies like Singles Ltd vs. choosing an off-the-shelf script such as those that datingsoftware.biz (www.datingsoftware.biz) provides. I know Robert at Singles Ltd, a decent guy, and I also have a couple of URL’s with him which I have to say has been a reasonably profitable venture and it is definitely one option available to someone who wants to start a dating site.
As one of the first companies offering dating scripts we have seen a large number of sites established over the years, some of which are still going and others that have faded away. The difference between success and failure is very much based on the client’s idea, his/her drive and an understanding of internet and offline marketing.
As the market has matured, so have the customers. Many of the early customers had the idea that they just need to upload the software and then sit back and watch the cash role in. It is our responsibility as vendors to advise our customers that this is a business like any other business and requires hard work and dedication. It is essential that the client knows from the outset that the greatest challenge will be in marketing the site.
A dating script can be a good way forward for an entrepreneur who does not want to spend all his time worrying about building the product but rather to focus on marketing. Product development can take 100k or more and then marketing on top of it. Why risk that kind of capital from the outset before you have proven your concept?
I would estimate at least 80% of our customers order additional features to be built into the software to make their site unique or to meet the needs of the particular community that wish to serve. So you can use a script as the basis for your idea and build onto it. Our scripts have significantly changed over the years to respond to the changes in the market and now incorporate features such as social networking, blogs and so forth. Customers can re-skin or make their own changes to the software and they are often unrecognizable as a pre-built script.
The suggestion that someone can put together a business plan and look for 200k plus in funding is fanciful. I know from experience that getting VC for a dating site is almost impossible unless there is something so novel about the concept that it is an attractive proposition to the money men. But what about all those niches that are begging for someone to step in and exploit them, that would not earn enough to interest VC but would be very nice in your pocket every month?
In our portfolio alone you can see an amazing diversity in the target audiences that our customers are trying to reach and this shows that clients have got the message.
I think the mistake in some of the comments above is to assume that the clients are all the ‘get rich quick’ type. There are many people out there who are happy to build a small community site and turnover 2 – 5 thousand dollars a month for their hobby. We have had customers earn much more than this but without that significant marketing capital it will always be a limited venture.
In conclusion, I think we all play a part in providing products and services for a diverse group of clients that are looking for different solutions. In many ways we compliment each other and in others we compete, but the bottom line is the customer knows what he wants and we just need to make sure that we do our best to provide the best products and after sales care that we can to help the customer realise their vision. The rest is down to them.
Hello everyone,I am a newbie on the block, but I’ve done some homework and you are all apart of that “must do” work.I do appreciate this opportunity for the enlightenment that everyone in this forum has given me.Each of your unique perspective’s, be it, “caution” or “opportunity” has credibility. I am encouraged and strengthen in my venture.I am considering a partnership of some kind with an experienced and innovative Dating company. My company shall be changing the dating landscape for good with WYSWYG applications.Dating is only a single component of what we can offer, but it is an important one.Gentlemen and ladies, get ready to “club hop” from city to city and country to country “LIVE” via http://www.clubswired.com. While many of you are still spending 10’s of thousands trying to match personalities,we still believe in the old shallow and superficial character of the human species (what you see is what you get).Don’t get me wrong all that mining you’re doing is a plus, but physical attraction is still a must!Real-Time viewing in the best dating environment is what we are bringing to your industry.I have wasted a lot of time and money on rip-off artists in the development of a site.I shall research all of your posted sites, but I am looking for someone who can grasp a clear understanding of the opportunity in our nightclub niche market.I welcome any positive feedback at jh@clubswired.com.We are in the final weeks of beta testing many of our components for our website design. Thanks for all the info. I have received from all of you pros.
I am looking for software that has profiles already integrated and that I can have programmed onto my domain name. Can anyone shed some light on what software would be the best. I am a newbie so any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Mark, I wouldn’t even consider most of those options. I am in the middle of doing due diligence on most of them for a client and many drop off the list as soon as you get a look under the hood and at customer support.
My list at onlinedatingpost.com/tools is a good addendum to your list.
Custom coding is the way to go.
I believe you can not compete without your own solution.
Regarding the marketing part, I believe that even today, when the market is quite saturated, you can reach critical mass with less than what others wrote above (Sam and Alexander just to name 2).
More on a similar theme in my blog:

Webscribble software is easy to use, and you can easily ,modify the interface. But the people @ webscribble are not helpfull at all when you encounter technical problems with their software. After a while they just started ignoring me with technical problems. To make a long story short: the software is really good, and reasonably priced, the sevice is bad.
Can anyone tell me which software is the most convenient to use for niche markets? The list is great but which is the preferred software?
Most of the software you buy will include the standard features. This is exactly what you want because to make a niche site you want to personalise the software by customizing it. That is what will differentiate you from your competitors. However, the earlier comment by John is an important point. Check the software, but check the service as well. We (www.datingsoftware.biz) are known for our high level of service and I am sure there are others too but unfortunately most customers that come to us do so because they have had little or no support from their previous vendor, so contact the sites on the portfolios and ask them what they think of the vendors’ software AND support before buying.

To whom it my concern:
I believe what I want done next is simple I will purchase one to two dating $000.00 sites. You will then take one site and customize to the contest. Because the contest is exactly a dating site accept one thing once the contestant enter their entry and pay that is it for the contestant. He will agree to terms of the contest and pay his, her, or theirs entry fee. Then this breaks the contest down what happen for the contestant and the members who are viewing the entry for the contest. Unless one site can be customize to both of my request. I also want a regular dating site format to go with both of these sites.
Site will contain the following:
1. Contestant simple will sign up using the forms that are provided for people that want to enter the contest.
2. Contestant will do as following add their name, password, email, image or video upload and of course payment link.
3. The members will look at the contestant material. Using a search form where members can browse and vote. 1 vote for each constant (Maximum of 5) every 24 hours.
4. When the member is finishing viewing the contestant material for the day he will pick his five choices like a shopping cart he will add his selection and remove until his final vote.
5. The site will show top 10 contestants per day to show the members who are winning. Then at the end will who show the top ten winners.
6. Now the site will automatically place each entry in the right contest. Giving each entry an entry number by category and will show at the bottom how many votes this contest has received as of today. At the end will show how many votes did this entry received.
7. Users can be members of the dating site and have free access to the
contestant site or users can be members of the contestant site and
have free access to the dating site.
Admin:
1. Will part will do pricing of the contest, category for the contest and view the material before it becomes part of the contest for the next month or bi-monthly.
2. Show payment detail
3. Set up contests, time and category
4. Library to hold all old images and video
5. I will provide you with the legal agreement, being over 18, consent
to be on the site, I will become the owner of the material, etc.
The Virtual Speed dating:
This is the other site I will purchase for $000.00 and this done to this site.
Site will contain the following:
1. Would have the dating site structure (registration, profile
questions, photos, etc) like a regular dating site this the difference for this part it is a party at which members will visit and group up like a chat room the most 100 people broken down in couples making it 50 couple at one time. The list 10 couples.
2. Admin which will enable me to add events
3. Users will sign up (pay) for the event if non-member and free for members.
4. Once the events start and gives each user 5 minutes to chat with opposite
sex, same sex, or couples, then the program would disconnect the chat and would move the user to chat with user 2 and so on.
5. When all sessions are completed, each user is prompted a page to enter
their matches. The program would check for compatibility and send the
matches their info for contact. Chat would show user name, picture if
available and the option to click on the detailed profile.
6. For members with web cams can use them for additional cost
If you have any questions, please let me know. On the phone and we can discuss in detail what issue you is having. After you customize the two sites I just want the sites link together as one and as separate. If a member pays for all three sites site he gets one discount, if he pays just for two he gets another discount, and if he just pay for one just one he pays one price. I want in place a one-day membership for people to try out the different site and free sign up to all three sites.
I want the main dating site and speed-dating site to be able take in couples and let both couple do a profile that this should already include. I would like the site to be multiple languages or have a section of where they are from as a member and where they want to meet people that you already say the site can do.
I just want the price of the customization for the other two sites and what it will cost to have all three connected as a site, two connect and just having the site for $0000.00, will cost with some customization which will include a little customization.
Can you give me a call between the time you will be ready to start the work in October, any time during that following week and this weekend at the number left at the top? I want to purchase and have at least the $0000.00, site work started and running within the next two to three weeks from now. The rest we can discuss payment and time frame.
Thank you very much in advance.
Sincerely
Wesley A. Alexander
