LA TIMES — July 16 — Money is pouring into businesses preening to become the next MySpace. Facebook has raised $38.2 million. Affinity Engines is helping about 50 colleges create their own Facebook clones. Bebo ($15 million), Doppelganger ($11 million), Gaia Interactive ($8.9 million), TagWorld ($7.5 million) and Tagged.com ($7 million).

The niche is flourishing as I can see. It’s always easier to follow someone then to make apath yourself.
That’s why when there are leaders there are also the seconds and the thirds near buy, satisfying the minority.
Nevertheless the first will be always in the mind of the members as a leader and pioneer. You won’t probably remember other names for community sites except MySpace someday… The reason is it’s become a conceipt that denotes a community site, the brand that offers many opportunities online.
The pheonmenon of the millions of users who love to share their digital lives with one another doesn’t seem to hinge itself on “pioneers” or “innovators” at all. Remember Friendster? I didn’t think so but it predates Myspace. Sure, Myspace may have embedded itself into the popular lexicon but pretty soon people will want greater efficiency, less ads in their face, and a user-friendly interface that makes the experience fun. Of the hundreds of social network clones, a few will succeed and the phenomenon will continue to perpetuate its unquenchable thirst for what’s new.
