Beginners Guide To Online Dating – 5 Great Tips!

Posted on January 17, 2007

OdBEST SYNDICATION — Jan 17 — Two out of five single people in the UK now use some kind of on line dating service.  What really matters is how you use a site when you actually sign-up to one. So here goes…

1. Create A Great Profile
2. Always Upload A Photo
3. Be Proactive.  Search and write
4. Write Great Emails. Tell that person a little about who you are and why you think you might both be compatible.
5. Check Back With The Site. What most people don't realise is that when you log-in to a dating site, your profile moves up the
listings on the internal search engine which means that you are more likely to be spotted and contacted. Visit the site once a day during your membership.

Jonathan White is founder of www.cupidnights.com a London-only dating site and writes on the singles scene for various newspapers and magazines.

Internet Dating and Social Networking Conference

Posted on January 12, 2007

Logo2007_5WHIR — Jan 11 — With the 11th annual Internet Dating and Social Networking conference just around the corner, Mark Brooks says Web hosts should make an effort to attend. The goal of the event is to help improve individual online business efficiency, identify new technologies, and increase traffic. Brooks says attendees for this conference break into two groups: execs from Internet dating and social networking companies and representatives from companies attempting to sell value-added services. What attendees will take away from this conference, says Brooks, is a better understanding of how to monetize their Web sites. FULL ARTICLE @ WHIR

If Truth be Told

Posted on January 12, 2007

ABC NEWS — Jan 12 — Katherine Flansburg met her boyfriend through PlentyOfFish.com, a free online dating site. Several months later, they moved in together. Everything seemed to be going well until her boyfriend's wife banged on the door. Flansburg rummaged through his desk drawers and found recently filed paperwork for a legal marriage separation, as well as an IRS earnings statement that showed her boyfriend's salary was only one-quarter as much money as he'd told her. 21st century daters can run background checks on potential mates. Flansburg was just one of 16 million Americans who have logged on for love, according to a 2006 survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project. If she had run a background check on her boyfriend before they moved in together and gotten serious, Flansburg may have found out that he was still married or that he'd lied about his earnings. FULL ARTICLE @ ABC NEWS

Mark Brooks: From what I understand only Nevada and California publicly list marriage status, and I'm not sure how earnings are publicly verifiable either. Assets maybe, but earnings?

OkCupid Raises $6 Million

Posted on January 12, 2007

Okcupidlogo_1GIGAOM — Jan 12 — OkCupid raised $6 million from a group of angels. Each time I talk to Yagan about his new company, he pulls out some variation on the same line: "Our goal is to reduce GDP by half a million dollars by completely eliminating the subscription online dating market." Yagan says he can run a successful dating site without making people pay, something PlentyofFish has also had success with. OkCupid currently has 600,000 active users (logged on within 90 days). Match.com has 1.3 million subscribers. PlentyofFish reports a quarter million users logging in per day. Yagan led SparkNotes and eDonkey before but, didn't take venture capital. He talked to twenty VC firms last year but went with collecting checks from five angels, whom he says he's not disclosing because we've never heard of them. FULL ARTICLE @ GIGAOM
