OPW — Aug 20 — Users who have been scammed should report the crime to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, here. Statistics on internet scamming are available here. Of those individuals who reported a dollar loss, the highest median losses were found among Nigerian letter fraud ($5,100), check fraud ($3,744), and other investment fraud ($2,695) complainants. – Mark Brooks

I was scammed of alot of money from my credit cards over one yr ago. It was considered a Romance Scam and I, believe it or not, fell in love with this idiot and the rest is history. They are mostly from Nigeria but claim they are from UK.
I found a group, shortly before I let this happen who helped me get through this mess, “Romance Scams at Yahoo”. I never knew they existed.

Actually those totals are incorrect. I have a victim who lost over $100K, another that lost $50K and another that sold her home, possessions, car etc to move overseas that totalled alone over $500k. Thank god she found out in time and could find housing and start over.

What are we supposed to do when a criminal is attempting to scam us? Are ther ANY policing agencies that actually DO SOMETHING about this?
I filed a report/complaint on the FBI’s website some weeks ago about an attempted scam ($3000) in progress. THe FBI person I talked with that pointed me to the website seemed completely indifferent.
I still have this clown trying to scam me. I could simply block his emails but if there was a law enforcement agency ANYWHERE that was interested in busting this gut – it would be easy! I have a fish on the line. But, nothing.

First of all, DO NOT EXPECT a response from the IC3, they consider this type of crime small pittance. Their priority is Corporate then Organized, then Minors/children, Identity Theft and ONLY those cases that are over $100K. Even then it takes forever and usually the victims are told nothing and are given no relief.
The reports are funneled through analysts (27 of them) and those reports could be hundreds in a day. From there they are “routed” to the local state police of the victim. Who most of the time laugh and throw away the files.
Ok, so now what are you supposed to do! Yes file a report, next, make copies of EVERYTHING you have, chat logs, coorespondance, banking receipts etc. You can report a loss on your taxes. As far as catching the criminal themselves depending on where they are will depend on if the government will work with ours and IF the guy used his real name. If it was someone pretending to be female keep in mind that it was really a guy. END OF STORY.
Your still asking me NOW WHAT! Im sorry but the reality of it is that we cant get your money back, your heart (if involved) will heal, you are going to be wiser now.. its a given. You are now able to tell anyone you know, Hey be careful on this dating site or that dating site because there are scammers and explain what they do, you dont have to say that you got scammed. No one wants to admit it. EDUCATE everyone dont let someone else be a victim.
My organization is dedicated to that as well as willing to go into the sites and scour their databases for scammers. We know what to look for even more than the webmasters that run the dating sites.
I could say “boycott this site or that one, start a class action suit” believe me I have tried. Education is our greatest defense. Protect yourself and look for someone locally instead of in another country. At least that way you can validate their stories.
Do NOT string along your scammer, leave that for the professionals please email me directly and I will put my staff on it and see what we can get out of them. We have had luck with getting stolen credit card numbers, personal information etc. all of our staff have gone through background checks and have been fully trained in “baiting”.
I would be glad to work with you more closely. Please contact me, I can explain so much more to you then!

Being a very intelligent and wise business woman – I can’t believe I could fall victim to this – but I guess I have a big heart.
I met a man on Cupid – nice looking. Started chatting with him. AFter a while we switched to Yahoo to chat. We his story, “wife died 6 years ago from cancer, he has 9 year old daughter, from Europe, lives in Illinois, working in Benin Africa”
Well didn’t take long before he told me he loved me …..etc.
Also didn’t take long to start asking for money.
He even called me. Girls be careful, I know if I could be scammed others can.
This is real. Our hearts are big sometimes -but the personals scams are bigger.
For your info – went by: easylife4u, jean_nicole4u, jean_nicole4u2, and probably more. Called himself Jean Nicolas Bazin.

I am so thankful I googled this guy!!! I was scammed several years ago and have learned the hard way to check someone out. I just started talking to this guy a few days ago. He told me the same story of his wife dying 6 years ago, 9 year old daughter, and that he was looking for true love. He is a very attractive man and has even called me briefly. This one is good and he starts out slow, but something told me to check him out. I also met him on Cupid and pray that every woman he comes in contact with checks him out. It took me all of 5 minutes to find this report on him.
Women………BEWARE, this man is very good and easy to suck you in if you have not had this experience before. I even told him I found the scoop on him and he still denies it…..I even have his pictures if you want to compare. He contacted me under jean_nicole4u on yahoo from the Cupid sight.
Thank You to whoever started this thread on him…..you are a lifesaver to many I am sure!!!

Every lonely person should be wary because they are vunerable. I met what I thought was a wonderful guy, Horacio Lotiff, from Nicaragua, who claimed to be in love with me. It was not too long before he started saying he had money problems. I had already fallen for him so I gave him. The demands for help and gifts just kept increasing. Eventually, I wisened up and used google on his handles ( shaklotiff and shakirizado ) WOW this guy was on almost every personals website. If only I had used google before I had gotten involved. Moral, do some checking of your own. There are some genuine people out there looking for a mate but there are also a lot of users.

There is stuff around to combat this now.
We’re working with Iovation to create a solid spam-free database by physically blocking computers that create spam profiles.
This will make the WhiteLabelDating.com network the first to offer this – and it will be made available to partners automatically at no cost as part of our standard revenue share agreement.

I was matched up with someone by the name of Thomas Brown on eharmony. After emailing each other, I gave him my cell number. I remember saying to my self that the voice did not match the picture that was on eharmony. Well weeks passed and sure enough he was in love with me and soon after he needed money to get back to the states,he was in the UK. This person never got a dime from me and I believe that the person in the photo was not the person I was dealing with. The gentleman in the photo probably has no idea of what is going on. please beware, right from the start my instincts told me something was off.

Beware of 2 men who I think are one and the same on Love & Seek. This is rather bizarre. They both contacted me within a day of each other. They’re profiles are eerily similar. They both invited me to move off site to chat on Yahoo. Both claim to be devout Christians. Andy Williams is 62, lives inLouisville KY. He is Irish born and has been in the states since he was 24. He is an electrical engineer. He lost his wife in an auto accident 3 yrs. ago and has a daughter Joyce who is 11. Micheal Silver is 58, lives in Island Park NY. He is Irish born and has lived in the states for 30 yrs. He is an electrical engineer who travels a lot for business. He lost his wife 5 yrs ago in an auto accident and has a 15 yr. old son David. They both immediately professed that God sent them to me and that I am the first woman that they have contacted since the death of their wives. Michael actually proposed to me by the second time we chatted. Both have asked me to relocate. When I told them that I didn’t even know them they both indicated that they would be willing to relocate here. Again I told them that it was ricdiculous and that we would have to correspond and get to know each other and that we would have to meet before even thinking of anything like that.
The next thing that happened is that Micheal contacted me and told me that his son David has had a terrible accident while they are in Africa on business and that he is in a coma. Michael needs $2000.00 for medical expenses. I told him that it’s out of the question. He has been continuing to contact me and plead for the money. He even sent me an address to send the money to. I also have transcripts of all of the conversations. All of this has happened in the last 5 days. I only met them on the 15th and the 16th of January. Their screen names are mic5566 and wonderful 1060. Yahoo addresses are silvermic5566@yahoo and andy_williams 1060 @yahoo.com. Beware

In response to Lisa S. comment Jan 20 about this Thomas Brown character…I met someone who fit the same description on American Singles. This was my very 1st time on a dating site. I guess it showed. Said he was from UK. After month of talking had to go to Spain for a job. Said contractor wasn’t paying laborers and no money to come see me, blah, blah. I wish I had of listened to my instincts when they kicked in but I felt sorry. What a sap. Sent some money, not as much as some of the poor souls I have read about. When I wouldn’t send anymore he left me high and dry. I reported him to AS but that is not a very good site so stay away from that dating site. This was May to July. He came back in September telling me he hadn’t contacted me because he was imprisioned under false pretenses and that his mom had passed away all to get more money from me. Didn’t work and this lass got a chance to blast off to him. I was going to report him to FBI. Wish I had of but too ashamed. The one thing that always gets me is the picture he used. I often wonder if that man knows his picture is out there…and I wonder if my picture is out there. Learned an important lesson through all this about dating sites. Also pray that I don’t loose faith in mankind for the sake of a buck.

Here some items to look for when evaluating whether an online business is a scam or not.
So what attributes do I look for in a website to gain confidence in purchasing online?
First I closely look at the website – typically if a website as a quality look and a number of pages with good content is a good sign. Typically if someone is a ripoff they’re not going to put a lot of effort into a website just for the purpose of taking advantage of people. It’s too much effort for short term gain as word typically travels fast about a disreputable merchant.
Second and this is pretty obvious – online merchants that accept American Express (AMEX) are typically in your top tier of merchants. Although the other cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover) are good AMEX I believe has the best customer service and this makes sense. Those other cards are free, AMEX charges a yearly fee. I like to personally use AMEX when I shop online, they seem to have better service when I might occasionally need it.
Third is the online merchant being part of the BBBOnline (Better Business Bureau) Network. If you don’t see this it doesn’t mean they are not a reputable merchant. However, if they do most likely they are.
Other things to look for.
Do they display a telephone number on their website? Are you able to call someone if you have a problem?
On any secure order forms set up to process orders and take credit card information the url address of the page should start with https instead of http. This is the web address shown in the white bar over the top of the webpage.
The bottom line is always use a credit card in shopping online. In the unlikely event you don’t get what you pay for you in almost all cases will get all your money back from the credit card company.

I posted on 1/20 re: 2 men from Love & Seek. Well the saga continues. Since then I have left my Yahoo messenger open. I have continued to get messages from both of them and pleads from “mic5566” to please not let his son die. He even sent me an address to send the money. It is Adeola Babalade 20 car park avenue, surulere lagos nigeria 2340 and a phone # +2348020557677.
Although I have not responded,I am continuing to copy all of the messages so that I have info to report. Today I got a message from another “man” using the same sad story. He is a widower with 1 child, same profession, same type of errors in his writing. Same characteristics. Also inviting me off site to chat on Yahoo. His screen name is me2wantluv. His e-mail addy is kelvin_wilson2003@yahoo.com. His chat name is kelvin_wilson2003. Beware of Love & Seek. It is infiltrated with these scammers. I also went into the site today to see if they were still on the site after being reported. Not only were they still there but mic5566 has 2 more profiles up with the same persons photo and different screen names. I feel bad for the guy whose picture he is using. Probably doesn’t even know that it’s up there. These guys also claim to have very high income jobs. It’s supposed to be a Christian site so I guess these scammers feel that because your a Christian woman you’ll feel sorry for them and fall for their scam.
Thank you so much for the warnings! I’m glad I checked this guy out. Jean Nicolas Bazin is also on Yahoo personals with the same info and story.
