PRESS RELEASE — Nov 12 — ActiveSymbols has just released a facial-recognition search engine that gives online daters the ability to search for mates who look like celebrities, but the company ultimately hopes its technology will be used for larger issues, such as helping law enforcement track down child molesters. The founder of the company is the former VP of Marketing at Kiss.com. The product called Eyealike Face Search allows the user to upload a photo, analyzes the facial features, compares them to hundreds of thousands of photos on the web and then presents the closest matches. The public beta site currently accesses 300,000 images on dating sites. FULL ARTICLE @ EARTHTIMES
Mark Brooks: Upload your photo and the system will show you what celeb’s you look like. Upload your dream girl/guy’s photo, or a celeb’s photo, or a combination of photos, and the Active Symbols system will find similar looking singles from Match.com and AmericanSingles.com for you. No doubt Match and Spark Networks are keeping an eye on this site to see if it has legs, and grows on its own. If it proves popular and pressworthy, expect to see it on Match soon. One of the most viral services Match ever introduced (and later removed) was the Weattract physical matching system.

Also remember at the 2005 iDate Conference, Fujii Film introduced facial recognition software that parallels the pioneering efforts of weAttract.com.
I know a major site or two that toyed with the idea of a partnership with Fujii Film for this application, but nothing ever crystallized.
Thx,

“One of the most viral services Match ever introduced (and later removed) was the Weattract physical matching system.”
It was urgently removed because never worked as expected. It seems that what is important in attracting people to one another may not be important in making couples happy, i.e. attraction science and long term romantic relationships are different things.

“Eyealike Face Search: Revolutionizing the Online Dating World”
Perhaps only for fun online dating (short term mating) but not for serious online dating (long term romantic relationship)
Because …

Couples in love often profess that the first look was enough for them to know that their partners were ‘The One’. Scientists, however, beg to differ, and say that the first look is not so much about romance, but about ego and sex.
….
The researchers found that attraction is based on social cues that say, ‘I’m interested in you’, the most important one being someone looking directly at you.

People are attracted to people who are attracted to them…the work challenges most previous studies of facial attractiveness that have focused on physical characteristics, such as a preference for symmetrical faces or masculine versus feminine features.

weAttract’s physical attractiveness system was not taken down due to any ineffectiveness per se. Match.com removed weAttract’s products due to a dispute and a breakdown of the business relationship.
Also, physical attractiveness is one aspect of relationships (short and long term); it is not the entire model. Most research on physical attractiveness shows small but consistent correlations with various facial features. Those findings are not at odds with psychological factors, such as “people like those who like them first.” It is well known that biological and psychological influences work in tandem.

Wow, Fernando and Dr Houran-some great information here!
The chemistry paradigm in coupling has been the holy grail of our industry. Match had been rumoured to be chasing it. I think it’s significant that chemistry is more complex than surface appeal/facial symmetry etc.
Thanks,
Jeff
