SOCAL TECH — Nov 6 — Stephen Stokols is CEO of WooMe, a Los Angeles-based online, Web 2.0 dating site is looking to bring the concept of speed dating to an online site. It is currently in beta and will launch in the next few weeks. In this interview Stephen talks about the service; how he got funded; the site's distinctive competence, being a cross between social networking and dating; and it's first market, Southern California.

Mark Brooks: WooMe is funded by one of the founders of Skype and he's been hands-on in developing WooMe so we can expect a good product. Zing.dm is developing a product dating sites can use for speed dating. There's a couple of other options also. Email me at mark@courtlandbrooks.com and I'll refer you to them.

Like WooMe’s approach to social networking. Traditional online dating is stale, social networking is too. This real time approach could spice it up a bit.

Speed dating works in the real world. I think it will work better online. I’ve not seen a good speed dating app yet, however.

Speed dating is popular. If you happen to be a little overweight, maybe general dating site is not that suitable. However BBW dating site like largesingle.com is definitely built for you, if you are looking for a serious relationship.

I am the co-founder of WooMe with Stephen Stokols. To further comment on the attractiveness of the speed dating market, it’s worth noting that 500,000 speed dating sessions will take place in 2007, involving 10 million participants. This covers the US and UK markets. This equates approx. to $1 billion industry. With very high penetration of PC-based voice and video comms, we’re finally at a point where an excellent face to face experience can be offered online.

It also says “Woome started its presentation with some stats around real world speed dating market – which will approach $1 B in 2008. ”
The US and UK speed dating markets as big as USD1 billion industry?
The entire US online dating market is nearly USD 700 millions.
I thought the US offline speed dating market were not bigger than USD 20 millions.
500,000 speed dating sessions * US 40 dollars each (average) == USD 20 millions

Mr. Stokols is honest when he says ” ….It’s all about introductions. We’re not looking to find soul mates, and people can use the platform how they want.”

From what I hear about online speed dating it sounds like it could be a great tool for online daters. I’m excited to see more sites focusing on online dating, instead of blogs claiming online dating is dead. I’ve found some excellent advice for online dating from Myles Reed’s new book Fishing for Love on the Net. http://www.fishingforlove.net Hopefully these new sites can really open up the world of online dating to more and more people.
