OPW — Nov 9 — I asked a friend in Silicon Valley about his experience using internet dating and here’s what he said. "I don’t have much faith in them, and I have not searched for new alternatives as it is difficult to know what is good and what is not. Especially ones just displaying old profiles, there’s no response to my emails, and the sheer ratio of men to women is just so lopsided. I have seen it at 30 to 1, or even best case it has been 12 to 1. It is so sweet for women to go out and date. Good women, they just don’t date online because the online dating scene is so polluted. It’s just so frustrating and gives a low hit rate. You get what you pay for. I for one would pay more for a better return. I think I am more into social events nowadays." Please advise my jaded friend. Your comments please. – Mark Brooks

It’s not hard for sites to share statistics about their members, such as their gender ratios, age brackets, and how much of their audience signed in lately. The reasons why they don’t are “obvious” – either so low they’re embarrassing, or so high they feel that they have to be protective.
Is anyone at all trumpeting their audience characteristics? Does anyone have figures to be proud of?

I think the big problem is that most of the men on online dating sites are simply beta males. They are just not aware of the attraction techniques necessary for getting online dates. This also causes the huge discrepancy in the men:women ratio. Women get discouraged with the quality of men and abandon online dating, while the desperation of the beta males seeking online dates continues to climb.
There are men who are killing it with online dating, however, it is a very small percentage. It’s kind of like the 80/20 rule, except more like 95/5, as in 5% of the male online dating population is dating 95% of the female online dating population.

Mark, you know these frustrated internet patrons have been a source of our membership for a long time. The women are much more cognizant of the inherent problems illuminated by Mr. Savage. Now, can his revelation somehow be communicated to those males so that maybe they can join the women and the more discerning men who are taking some real action by going offline to the real world with organizations that are really concerned about and take an active interest in their social lives?

The problems can be directly contributed to the sites. Until we change the way we do business, it will continue. The last thing dating sites want is for you to connect and stop paying. The best way is hide activity dates, total membership numbers and the biggest culprits (Almost all sites… don’t tell you who is a paid member, capable of even responding). My free site lists the number of active members and the number who join each day as well as their activity so you can make up your own mind. It’s very small, but the members are real and it’s a start. The big boys can do the same if they truly have “Millions”.

I dispute the 30-1 male to female ratio. That may be the case on certain adult sites, but most dating sites its pretty well 50/50

I am pretty sure it has something to do with the quality of his profile. If he has a bad looking photo and a profile that’s not well written, then women will be less likely to respond to his emails. Maybe he can post his profile here so we can take a look and advise ways to improve it 🙂

I am off-line matchmaker that organizes Singles Events. I have seen an increase in attendance and requests for my social events. I think one of the big draws is that each event gathers many new faces. People tend to believe the same old faces continue to pop up with on-line. That may be in part due to the fact that they frequent the on-line site more often so of course they are going to be seeing the same faces over and over again. It is ingrained in their brain.

I love the fact that most people are getting burnt out on the online dating scene. It sets them up for me and makes my job as a matchmaker so much easier!
