LTR.com Looking For A Partner

Posted on November 5, 2008

Ltr_logo DAVID SIEGEL — Nov 4 — In 2005, I started developing a new site based on a new kind of matching engine for the marriage market. I had problems with my lead developer and had to stop development. I am now looking for a partner to take the concepts forward. The idea is to build a competitor to eHarmony that is free and advertising based. I have a great domain name – LTR.com, the interface is already completely designed. I have developed the matching engine but it hasn't been tested at scale yet.

The full article was originally published at David Siegel's website, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: LTR is a great domain, and David quite the visionary. Alas, this project has never quite gotten off the ground. Its always tough to find good developers. I've worked with ASE Soft in the past, to good effect. They built Adam4adam, myPartner, Mary, LookBetterOnline and PeopleFishing, among others. They're out of Romania, very reasonably priced and have lots of experience in the dating and SNS space. (Full Disclosure: ASE Soft is a <new> client of Courtland Brooks)

Liz Wasserman, Mate1.com – CEO Interview

Posted on November 5, 2008

Liz_wasserman OPW INTERVIEW — Nov 5 — I talked with Mate1.com's CEO, Liz Wasserman on the subject of scamming. – Mark Brooks

What kind of scamming activity have you encountered at Mate1?
We've encountered a wide range of scamming activity. It's evolved over time partly, I think, because people in this industry have been pretty quick to adapt. Scams fall by the wayside as people adapt to them.

In the early days, almost all of it emanated from African countries that don't have laws against wire fraud. From what I could tell, the scammers basically set up call centers full of people who created thousands of fake dating profiles. They would pretend to be very attractive women in the U.S. who were "temporarily" in some African country and needed to get home. They would try to extort money via Western Union. We saw a lot of those, even from Eastern Europe for a while. We actually have a whole catalog of these schemes that we made available on the site (link: http://www.mate1.com/fraud/fraud_warning) because we wanted to tell our members what to look out for.

And then there are the ones you can't really prepare for because they're idiosyncratic. People who are looking for love can be some of the most vulnerable people out there. Anyone who has an attractive picture and can talk their way into someone's heart, basically can very often convince them to send some money. And those often tend to be minor scams, but we do catch them more often than not simply by having undercover customer service agents trolling the site all day long.

We've also used various technologies, like matching up IP's with locations to make sure people aren't misrepresenting where they are, but for the most part it's a matter of constant communication with our customer service department to find out what the latest thing is and to quickly adapt to it.

Have you found the number of scamming incidents increasing?
I think early on we developed a reputation as being tough on scams because it used to be one of our major preoccupations. It ate up a huge amount of our resources. And as we adapted and put in more technological mechanisms to prevent it, scammers who are in-the-know went elsewhere.

Have you found any ways to catch them pre-signup?
There are ways and a lot of them revolve around IP detection – knowing where the person is half the battle. There are certain areas that these people tend to congregate. We have a couple of mechanisms in place to try to shuffle out those people who are clearly suspicious. Luckily, scammers don't tend to be extraordinarily brilliant technologically, so we're able to outsmart them.

I hear the Russians are particularly adept.
We do catch quite a few in Russia and surrounding countries. Then there are some women in Russia who are borderline. You don't know if they're a scammer or just in a really bad situation and you have to be careful to distinguish between the two.

But, yes, they're highly intelligent and highly desperate so you have to watch out for Eastern Europe, for sure. I know there are sites that have blacklists which we do refer to from time to time. I don't know, though, if they're still as good as they used to be. They used to keep fairly up-to-date lists of these personas. There was one called Russianwomenblacklist.com. I think having central repositories that could be intranet shared by people in the industry would be really useful. You just wouldn't want to share it with the scammers.

Any other thoughts on how the industry might be able to work together?
I think people are pretty forthcoming with information in this business. Whenever you meet people at industry events, people like to talk and I think that's a great thing. Anything we in the industry can do to devote and share resources would, in the end, actually be money-saving for all of us. I think it would be great if we could all collaborate and help each other create the best anti-scam systems possible. I would certainly participate in such a thing.

Allegran Lays Off 70% Of Workforce

Posted on November 3, 2008

Allegran_logo OPW — Nov 3 — Allegran runs Loopylove and GirlsDateForFree. Apparently 17 were laid off today. Everyone but management and a few in marketing. Reasons mentioned were the high cost of marketing, losses of of £1m this year, Plentyoffish taking market share in th U.K. and Match and Dating Direct's considerable ad spending. Allegran got squeezed in the middle. (Full Disclosure: Plentyoffish.com is a client of Courtland Brooks)

WorldFriends Mixes Facebook With Match.com

Posted on November 3, 2008

Worldfriendsnetworks_logo TECH CRUNCH — Nov 1 — WorldFriends, the Tokyo- and Shanghai-based social network, which now has nearly 2m users from all over the world, did a soft (re)launch last week, mainly enhancing a number of networking features. WorldFriends is walking a fine line between being a platform for dating, language exchange and making international friends. CEO Dominic Penaloza says about 4% of WorldFriends members are paying for services, which certainly helped the site to reach profitability 3 years after launch. Currently the company is particularly active in Japan, where 33% of paid members are from. FULL ARTICLE @ TECH CRUNCH

Mark Brooks: I met with Dominic last year while in Shanghai for the Asian Internet Dating Conference. They are backed by the founders of Lavalife. This company is a rising star in the idating industry in Asia. Internet dating is dirty word in Japan, so WFN has taken the approach of letting users approach each other under the guise of language learning. This is indirect approach to idating greatly suits the Japanese psyche.

Making A Living Out Of People’s Propensity To Cheat

Posted on November 3, 2008

Ashleymadison_obrazek_z_nytimes PRESS OF ATLANTIC CITY — Nov 1 — DeLorenzo runs All State Investigation, an infidelity detective agency. He's also a writer, co-authoring the book "28 Tell-Tale Signs of a Cheating Spouse," and founder of the Web site Infidelity.com. He says society is much more open to extramarital affairs now than it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. Noel Biderman agrees about society's growing tolerance for infidelity, so he created an online dating service called the Ashley Madison Agency that caters to attached men and women looking for an affair. Biderman said mainstream dating sites attract a lot of married customers. If people are going to have affairs anyway, why fight it?

The full article was originally published at Press of Atlantic City, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: Infidelity.com is opening their Saudi Arabian office in Jeddah shortly. Sadly, no one will be in attendance from their head office for the opening ceremony.

Posted on November 3, 2008

Ten Mistakes Made By Dating Sites

Posted on November 3, 2008

Usabilitytestingtv_logo USABILITYTESTING.TV — Nov 2 — The most important thing for dating sites is to have active members: in general, active members pay; dormant members do not. It's also important that the members can take the actions they want to take, and not what you think they should want to take.  Here are the top 10 mistakes made by dating sites.

  • Registration is too long.
  • Photo upload is not part of the registration flow.
  • No easy way to find who's online.
  • Not letting members know the status of their emails (or asking them to pay for it).
  • Making updating a profile tougher than necessary.
  • No search by partial username.
  • Not notifying users when someone "hot listed" or "favorited" them.
  • Sending the content of the email to their personal email.
  • Not sending real-time notifications.
  • Connecting IM and Online status.
