OPW — Mar 11 — All dating sites should have some kind of filter or focus to
add
real value for users. Figure, every bar has an ambiance and specific
kind of audience. So why should dating site be any different. The
most important filter, really, is to remove the people who are
derogatory or abusive towards your communities. Plentyoffish is now
actually using this is a differentiating feature in their ads in the
NYC subway and on taxis and buses in Boston. "We delete users unfit to
date!" states the ad. Your comments please. (Full Disclosure: POF is
a client of Courtland Brooks) – Mark Brooks

Ballsy move – the joys of private ownership, can’t imagine match.com trying this!! 🙂
As someone generally terrified of US litigiousness, I’m surprised that Plenty of Fish is suggesting that any user deleted from their site is socially, biologically, economically or otherwise “unfit to date”.
If I had been deleted, I might be offended that I was classed as unfit to date. Especially it I had a particular disability, religious belief, skin colour, age, etc through which I may be inferred to be “unfit to date” as I had been deleted.
Anyone fancy doing an industry sweepstake of how long it will be until Markus gets his first court case? 😉
He’s got bigger balls than me!! 🙂

“We delete users unfit to date!”
It is only part of a marketing strategy, because the ownerS of PlentyofFish, Kanciar&Frind, intend to create a “paid site” inside a “free site”, but I seriously doubt it will work as expected.
“We delete users unfit to date!”
They are not going to delete absolutely anybody. (I have several fake profiles at PlentyofFish since years)
I think they should had first customized the site in different languages, the German version, the French version, the Spanish version, the Portuguese version, etc.
As for the “Serious Member Upgrade” it is only a virtual gift some users buy for themselves.

I think it’s bold, but without any clue as to what constitutes ‘unfit’ it reads as highly judgmental. Not necessarily a bad thing, but who – or what – is doing the judging?

No, POF doesn’t delete users unfit to date. It deletes users that its computer bugs decide should be deleted. Under it’s free services, POF should also list “free deletion without warning.” You’ve heard me say this before.
What I don’t understand is why the POF site is never upgraded and looks so hokey and home made. The faqs still list Markus as running the show by himself from his apartment with some help from his girlsfriend who reads some emails. Come on, we all know better. Why can’t the site get a facelift? It’s because POF takes its readers for granted, gives zero customer service, and likes to brag about how great it is. Get over yourself. My prediction: POF has reached the top and tanks within a few short years, still with the same old graphics and home-made look, still with no customer service, still talking about how great it is.

Some advice to my friend Markus: Don’t buy ads on taxi tops (or posters in the London Underground) to advertise an internet dating site. Someone else has already made this mistake — no not my website, but the folks at Gay.com. If you want to advertise a web site, do it on the internet. Have a real link that your prospective customer can immediately click. You can’t click through a taxi top. It’s your money, but you’re blowing it on advertising like this.

Well Marcus has done a great job with POF! People can criticize all they want but the facts speak for themselves.
As the owner of a free dating service, I know some of the challenges he faces to maintain quality. I actually review every profile before it goes live.
