New Friends Reunited Owner Plans Over-50s Dating Site

Viximo Seeks To Turn Virtual Goods Into Real Profit

Viximo logo MHT — Aug 7 – It’s hard enough for online retailers to get consumers to spend money on real goods and services but Viximo is betting that sites will want to get into the business of selling virtual goods. Viximo provides a white-label virtual goods store with gifts and personal accessories designed to complement online identities and messages. The company is getting traction in places such as dating sites, casual games and social networks, where virtual goods are used as gifts, incentives and add-ons to user profiles. In April, Viximo announced a $5M funding from Waltham-based North Bridge and Boston-based Sigma Partners.

Virtual goods only started to gain serious traction in the US near the end of 2007. Virtual goods revenue in the US is projected to reach $500M in 2009 and still has a large amount of room for growth given that the US’s internet population is 66% larger then Korea and Japan’s internet audience combined.

eHarmony Attempts To Cut Off Patent Suit

Eharmony-logo LEGALTIMES — Aug 6 – Last week, eHarmony’s attorneys from Orrick,
Herrington & Sutcliffe asked Judge Paul Friedman at the U.S.
District Court for the District of Columbia to declare that the company
had not infringed on patents owned by eRecruitment, a job search site
based in the UK. According to the complaint, eHarmony received a letter
dated July 14 asking the company to either shut down its site or pay a
licensing fee for the technology that classifies and indexes users’

Premiermatch logoPHILLY — Aug 5 – Premier Match, a service with offices in Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, has signed up nearly double the number of new clients this year compared with the same time period in 2008.  The cost of a full-year membership at Premier Match starts at $5,500 and guarantees 10 to 12 introductions. According to Forrester Research, online dating is the 3rd largest producer of revenue among all paid-content Web sites, generating $957M in 2008, a figure the firm predicts will grow 10% by 2013. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, couples are more likely to stay together in times of need than in plenty. The number of divorces and annulments dropped by 16,000 from 2006 to 2007, a decline of 2%.

Defrocked Pastor Sues Christian Dating Site

7EHIMLEN THE LOCAL — Aug 4 — A Church of Sweden minister has demanded compensation from a Christian dating site after he was stripped of his clerical collar for insulting a number of the site's female users. The operators of the 7EHimlen ("Seventh Heaven") site kept copies of the pastor's online comments and passed them on to his superiors at the cathedral chapter in Växjö in southern Sweden. The ensuing scandal led to a hearing in which the clergyman lost the right to perform religious services. The pastor is now suing 7EHimlen for 370,000 kronor ($52,000) for loss of income and a violation of his right to privacy.
