Dating In The “Facebook Era”

Posted on August 18, 2009
Clara_shih EXAMINER — Aug 18 – Clara Shih is the author of the newly released bestseller, “The Facebook Era: Tapping Online Social Networks to Build Better Products, Reach New Audiences, and Sell More Stuff”. When asked about how Facebook has changed the dynamic of dating relationships, here is what she had to say:

CS: Facebook is an incredible tool for managing relationships: romantic, platonic, professional, or otherwise.

Q: Who needs a dating site when you can use Facebook to score a date at the cost of nothing?
CS: Some people still prefer more anonymity and being able to access new pools of people outside of their existing networks. I think we'll see more hybrid models

Q: Have you ever scored a date using Facebook?
CS: I am dating someone now whom I did not meet on Facebook, but checking out his profile and our friends helped me learn more about him.

Q: What's your take on the evolution of dating from the 70s until now?
CS: the 70s were about sexual liberalization and female independence, the 80s toned it back a bit. The 90s got hot and heavy with sexually explicit music lyrics, movies and culture. The last ten years, we've seen online dating with strangers take off with Match, eHarmony, Yahoo! Personals. Now we are starting to date more within our friend groups through Facebook.

Q: Do you think the Internet creates more or less drama in a relationships?
CS: Probably more drama because if your girlfriend or boyfriend is acting up, you're more likely to be able to find out about it.

Q: What's the best way to get introduced to someone you're interested in dating?
CS: The Match Matrix app seems like a fun way to indirectly bring up the fact that you could be more than friends. The Friend Match is another popular app that lets people set up their Facebook friends. For someone you have never met, you might use Are You Interested, Most Eligible Singles or Flirt Wall.

This Dating Site Was Born On…

Posted on August 18, 2009

Match logo old OPW — Aug 18 — We thought it would be interesting to create a list showing when various dating companies were first launched.  We've added launch and 'belly-up' dates to the companies on our 'News Listed By Company' section.  (Look on the right, under 'Search'). This data was mainly collected from the Wayback Machine and we've linked out to the first image wherever possible.  Here are some interesting ones for you.

  • FriendFinder  Launched in Mar 1997
  • JDate  Launched in Dec 1998
  • Match.com  Launched in Jan 1998
  • Matchmaker.com  Launched in Dec 1998
  • Plentyoffish  Launched in Jan 2002

We also list 'belly-up' dates. e.g.

  • Badgermatch  Launched in Mar 2004, Died in Oct 2007
  • BikerDating  Launched in Mar 2003, Died in Jan 2008
  • LoveHappens  Launched in Dec 1998, Died in Apr 2008

You get the idea. I hope its useful, or at least amusing.

49% Of Americans Know Someone Who Has Dated A Person They Met Online

Posted on August 17, 2009

Peoplemedia logo PR WEB — Aug 17 — A new nationwide survey conducted by People Media, a provider of targeted online dating communities, in association with Chicago market researcher Synovate, found that half of all Americans know at least one person who has dated someone they met online, and the majority of that group actually know more than one person. The survey marks a significant increase in online dating over the past few years: in 2006, 26% of Americans said they knew someone who had gone on a date with a person they met through a dating site, according to a Pew Internet & American Life survey.

Economy Drives Free Relationship Counseling

Posted on August 14, 2009

Sidetaker logo PR NEWSWIRE — Aug 14 – Men and women are turning to Internet sites like SideTaker.com not only to ask advice about their problems, but to help decide their arguments, noting it's a cheaper alternative to professional relationship counseling. SideTaker.com allows for both sides of an argument to be voiced simultaneously, letting others vote on who's at fault while giving their own advice in the matter. Keeping it all completely anonymous, arguers can offer all the facts and the outcome is brutal truth.

Singelringen Or SHI Necklace?

Posted on August 14, 2009

Singelring shi necklace OPW — Aug 14 — First there was the Single Ring, Singelringen, now there's the Singles Necklace, or should I say, the SHI necklace, which stands for Single, Happy and Interested.

iDating sites continue to thrive despite the rise of social networks because internet dating sites offer up a pool of people who are not only single, but single, available and motivated. Social networks offer up people who may be single, but may not be that 'available' or motivated enough to respond. Singles rings and necklaces offer a similar promise. Wearers are indicating that they are not only single, but very available, and so motivated that they're prepared to wear a Singleringen or SHI necklace. But do they really work? Of course not. Very few people would recognize their meaning. But its a nice idea. I opted for the ring a while back, but noone ever recognized it and it looked a bit too metrosexual for my liking. – Mark Brooks
