CANADA.COM – Oct 2 - Freshly launched Gelatodating.com breaks from simply matching personal profiles to weaving Twitter comments, Facebook updates and other social networking activities together to capture the online persona. Gelatodating founder Steve Odom built on the concept, designing Gelato profiles that are automatically freshened with what people are sharing online. "It's really hard to fake a profile on Gelato," Odom said. "You are pulling in information from a lot of accounts."

Mark Brooks: The lines between social networking and internet dating are blurring. The key differentiator between SNS and idating services is/was that members of idating sites don't disclose their identities until they are good and ready.

“The lines between social networking and internet dating are blurring”
Mr. Brooks, that is true only for fun_online_dating, and not for online_dating for serious daters!!!!
Social networking could merge with online_dating for fun, for flirting, for entertainment purposes, for instant gratification.
Social networking and online_dating for serious daters are like water and oil, they will never mix.

“to weaving Twitter comments, Facebook updates and other social networking activities together to capture the online persona. ”
???
Most probably is an stupidity because:
Profiling by music preferences to assess personality,
video preferences to assess personality,
color preferences to assess personality,
bookmarks preferences to assess personality,
handwriting analysis to assess personality,
purchases and buying trends from credit cards to assess personality,
and other methods like them;
add distortion to the measurement.
The WHOLE precision will be LESS than any person could achieve searching by his/her own!!! [in the range of 3 or 4 persons you want to contact per 1,000 persons screened]
Kindest Regards.

I’ve been wanting to introduce myself to you, Mark. Thanks for the article on Gelato. I’m Steve, the founder of Gelato.
Fernando raises an interesting point. However, from my own experience, I found if I follow someone on Twitter for a couple of weeks, I feel like I know them. I get a sense of what they like, what they talk about, what they complain about. I wanted that in a dating site.
And its not just Twitter. I’ve always felt if I could see what music someone listens, I’d get a pretty good sense of whether I would want to date them. Now, having similar musical tastes doesn’t ensure we will have a connection, but for me it eliminates some chaff. I built Gelato to experiment with ways to eliminate more false positives in online dating using this great content we’re creating around the web about ourselves.
Thanks again for the post. Happy to chat any time.

Hi Steve, great to hear from you. Please ping me at mark @ courtlandbrooks dotcom as well.
Psismic had a similar idea/approach recently. You’ve taken things one step further.
Ultimately people usually don’t know what they really want, and they often ‘fib’ online. What someone says in a profile, and what they enter as their preferences can be misleading. Behavior is a better indicator of who people really are and can help suitors get a better idea if they like a person.
Perhaps we can do a CEO interview for Online Personals Watch sometime soon. Please keep us posted on your news hits and press releases by emailing them to tips@onlinepersonalswatch.com.

Good idea Steve, and I also agree with what Mark is saying below. It is a very promising direction for online dating. But I still believe that the gap between online and offline dating must be reduced. This is actually the inevitable march of the dating industry in general. There are a few tools that are very well adapted to merge these two domains, one of them is the Matchmaking Device System that I proposed in 2006, which is now a free license for everyone.

“Social networking and online_dating for serious daters are like water and oil, they will never mix.”
Traditional online dating is limited because it only sets up strangers, who might often be scammers from another country.
From a woman’s view, and some men, but women hold more power online, there is a serious issue of trust and safety. Women who want to get married want to find reasons to trust a man, and they want more information to prove who he is, and social networking tools establish this trust.
I think Casual Dating would be limited by social networks, because some people don’t want to be stalked or harassed by one night flings. The traditional Casual Adult Dating sites maintain privacy and facilitate meeting people outside your circle.
But the problem with Free social networks is that they have very little revenue. Its a great service, but is it leaving too much on the table by relying on up-selling.
