Dating Site For Gamers Forced To Shut Down

Posted on March 31, 2010

Gamecrush screenshot CANOE TECHNOLOGY – Mar 31 – GameCrush.com is only a week old, but already has been inundated with requests and been forced to shut down until it can add more servers to meet demand. The site is a full-fledged social networking and gaming platform, allowing visitors to set up profiles, browse other people's profiles, and chat with each other via video and text messaging. If they find someone they like, they can purchase one-on-one gaming time, starting at $6.60 for ten minutes. The site's servers quickly died when they were inundated with as many as 10,000 visitors in only five minutes. Now the site has been shut down until the development team can install the necessary hardware upgrades to meet demand.

Owner Of Online Dating Site Arrested For Fraud

Posted on March 31, 2010

Scam picture INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES – Mar 31 - Barrie Turner is alleged to be in connection with the operation of more than 200 web sites offering "executive dating" services. The accused is the owner of Executive Dating LLC, a company which offered online dating services through various linked websites such as Executive Catholic Dating, Executive Gay Dating and Executive Seattle Dating. Customers said they paid as much as $997 for a six month membership and were told the fee would pay for "two to seven introductions or 'matches' per month."  Most of them received the same "match" profile and sometimes fictitious ones, and when they attempted to date this person, the system replayed that the person had chosen to date someone else. Investigators estimate that Executive Dating received more than $1.2 million in mailed and wired payments.

Interview With Andrew Conru

Posted on March 31, 2010
Andrew_conru_2010 LOVESITES.COM – Mar 30 -

Q: Back in 1994 when you started up WebPersonals.com, did you ever think that the industry would be this huge?
A: While I understood that online dating would change the way people meet, I didn’t fully grasp the extent that it would change the lives of hundreds of millions of people.

Q: Is there any new technology that you see getting incorporated into online dating that will revolutionize it? Mobile, GPS, Apps, Video, VOIP, Matching
A: There are four elements to online dating: access, member profiles, searching/matching, and member interaction. The access via mobile does open members to more spontaneous meetings. As far as member profiles, most people are comfortable only with uploading photos and creating text profiles. Members say that online dating sites have tons of profiles but it gets harder and harder to find a good match (while actually, the matches are better than before just that they have become more picky).

Q: You were one of the pioneers in developing niche community sites with AsiaFriendFinder and BigChurch. What made you think that these niche groups would be so successful?
A: In the early days of online dating, we had to come up with ways to make people feel comfortable that they would find good matches and one way was to show them that all the members of a site matched their primary filter.

Q: Do you think that there is room for an emerging dating company to compete with the likes of FriendFinder Network, Match.com or eHarmony?
A: There is also always the potential for a first-mover company to take advantage of new traffic markets.

Q: What do you think of eHarmony’s approach to personality test matchmaking vs. searching profiles?
A: I believe that self-assessment tests, specific suggestions on how to better search, and many profile with personality data give online daters a better chance at success.

Q: Do you think that Social Networks are a big threat to the dating industry at large?
A: In 2001, I modified FriendFinder.com to support both friend social networking and online dating. It turned out not to be successful because members found that interacting with their current friends was a separate process than discovering new friends and dates.

Q: Do you think love can blossom in 140 characters or less?
A: The most common subject line sent to members of online dating sites is “hi”.  The question is more dependent on what the person had to do before they were able to send you that 140 characters… how were they screened?  how do you know that they have the potential to be worth loving?

Q: What is one thing that you would tell someone pursuing a new start-up?
A: Pick your battles… find the minimum product/service offering features that you need to have in order to have a complete solution and get it done as soon as possible.

Match.com Launches Campaign To Promote New Service

Posted on March 30, 2010

Matchaffinity logo MAD.CO.UK – Mar 30 – Match.com is launching a new TV campaign to promote its MatchAffinity relationship service on Thursday (1 April). MatchAffinity differs from match.com because the service suggests to registrants other committed single people with whom they are likely to be compatible. The compatibility is based on the results of the in-depth affinity personality test which all members take upon joining. The ad, created by Mother London, shows a couple who realise their affinity for each other through a dance.

Alexander Harrington, President Of MeetMoi

Posted on March 30, 2010

Alexander Harrington President of Meetmoi OPW INTERVIEW – Mar 30 – Meetmoi has one of the best mobile dating offerings around. We interviewed Andrew Weinrich, the CEO, in January 2009. Andrew was the founder of SixDegrees.com, no less. Here’s our interview with Alexander Harrington, a Wharton MBA grad, and the President.

Mic_35

Listen to the interview

What is your background?
I joined MeetMoi as President in June of 2009. Prior to that I had been Senior Vice President of Strategy Operations for Zagat, most known for its print and online restaurant guides.

How would you say work with Zagat has influenced what you’re doing with MeetMoi?
MeetMoi had a great strength in technology and direct marketing and I had a direct marketing background. I think I managed an enterprise that was very brand focused and had strength in licensing and these are directions I’ve taken the company.

Zagat is certainly a great service and I use it every couple of weeks. MeetMoi of course is a great name as well. How are you going to build that into an unique dating service?
The thrust of MeetMoi is centered around the value of bringing dating into a mobile context. People carry their devices with them wherever they go. The real time communication channel and the location based element add a new dimension to dating. It makes it much more immediate and reduces the friction to help people connect in person in a way that traditional dating websites don’t.

How do people really react to location based services? Do you find you have a majority of users using it?
One of the hurdles to get over is getting consumers comfortable with sharing their location. When people share their location with us they’re sharing it with us alone and we don’t disclose it to other users. We can then return matches nearby.

I can’t help thinking some users would imagine somebody walking up to them using their phone like a homing beacon. How accurate is it? How closely defined location wise is it?
Right now what we share is distance; we don’t share direction or specific location. So you can’t very well track someone down with that information. It just gives you a sense of who is nearby and who could potentially be available to meet in person, which is the most natural way of getting to know someone.

You’ve introduced virtual gifts recently. How is that going?
It’s going great. One of the things we discovered about virtual gifts in a dating context is that consumers are less price sensitive and we found our higher price point $5.99 is actually in some days the best seller, better than the $3.99 and $1.99 price points. It’s a great differentiator and users are willing to pay because there are additional services that come with it, for example “a la carte” communication that you would otherwise have to subscribe to.

Have you done an analysis on how much more people respond once they’ve received a virtual gift?
We have looked at the numbers early on. I would say users are two to three times more responsive.

I can imagine people who are using mobile dating to be a little more active and a little more interested in events. You have just teamed up with Time Out. How is that working out?
They’re a tremendous partner for us. For years they have been creating content around single lifestyle and nightlife in major cities around the US. So it is the right kind of brand to work with. We provide them both mobile dating and traditional online dating in an integrated experience. The users that they’ve added to our network have been really active and engaged.

What does the future hold for MeetMoi? Where would you like to end up 2010?
We would like to be the largest mobile dating company in the world. We see mobile dating not just as a niche business. We see mobility as a killer app especially for people in their 20’s who are interested more in casual dating.

The Maryland Legislation Attempts To Ban Online Dating Promotions

Posted on March 29, 2010

Paragraf OPW – Mar 29 – It has been confirmed that the International Marriage Brokers Bill aims to prevent online dating websites from running gender specific pricing schemes. The terms of the bill will also apply to holidays such as Valentine's Day. It isn’t specified whether or not the regulations will have an impact on a “ladies night” event in real time. Legislative staff member, Lisa Baugher, has provided in-depth details on the specifics of the bill's regulations in a recent email to Maryland Local, Michael Parrotte.

According to Baugher, "The bill defines an international marriage broker as an entity that provides dating, matrimonial, or social referral services involving recruits.  The bill also defines a recruit as an individual who is not a citizen of the United States who uses the services of an IMB for dating, matrimonial, or social referral services. The term "international marriage broker" does not apply to an organization that does not charge a fee based on gender or country of origin to any party for the services provided. This would apply to temporary promotions offering different pricing schemes based on gender or country of origin as well."

Niche Dating Sites Attract Date ‘Crashers’

Posted on March 29, 2010

Online dating screen with hearts MSNBC – Mar 29 - According to a study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, men are “more likely to misrepresent personal assets, relationship goals, personal interests and personal attributes whereas women are more likely to misrepresent weight.” JDate – has been crashed by so many non-Jews over the years. "I think people don’t pay attention to the specialty aspect of the site” says Tina Tessina, psychotherapist and author of “The Unofficial Guide to Dating Again.”“Whether a relationship can make it or not depends on the character of the two individuals,” she says. “Not their external circumstances.” Furthermore, pretending to share some common interest might make a potential partner angry. “You can only fake it for so long,” says Wellman, who advertised on SugarDaddy4Me.com. “It’s not like the girls are going to ask to see your bank statements but if you take them to Jack in the Box for dinner, the jig is up.”
