PARADIGM SHIFT – Apr 27 – According to Comscore latest rankings, PlentyofFish.com is #1 dating site.
In a legal notice Match.com says its not possible that PlentyofFish.com has as many signups as we do every day and demands that POF enter into a confidential agreement where they show how they are able to generate more relationships and dates than they do. Match.com claims 472 marriages per day or 994 people getting married per day. Match also claims 20,000 signups a day. If we assume they get no signups outside of the US, and they have a sky high conversion ratio of 15% and male and female signups are equal, that means 3000 people pay so they can communicate with other users. So does anyone actually believe that every day 944 out of 3000 new paying users of match.com will get married?

Mark Brooks: The numbers that really matter are how many members login every day and how many have 'successful relationships' after meeting because of a particular online dating site. The first number is relatively easy for sites to monitor internally. The second number is tougher. Everything else is far less interesting. Many sites offer up 'currently online' numbers. Unfortunately many small sites offer up bogus numbers. Users should check out Compete.com (for USA) or Alexa (beyond USA) numbers before investing time and money in a particular dating site. (Full Disclosure: PlentyofFish was a client of Courtland Brooks from 2006-2010).

Memo to Markus: Size matters. The size of your bank account matters. Markus may have bragging rights to the number of visitors to his site, and that number may exceed that of Match.com. But Match.com should still be smiling all the way to the bank.

Jonathan can you name a single person in the dating industry that makes more money than me each year?
Its one thing to have a company that makes a ton of money but is shared between thousands of investors, its another thing to have a company that makes money and you don’t have to share it with anyone.

Value of shares isn’t money in the bank. I own 100% of my companies shares, so he would have to sell for 4 times the amount of make the same amount of money, probably a lot more because he is in france.
The point is revenue and profits of a company are not equal to take home pay of a owner ceo etc.

I think Match could be more interested in destroying PlentyOfFish (and OKCupid also) than acquiring it.
Because:
1) Joining PlentyOfFish is like joining the army. You can not expect to find the most beautiful and intelligent women there for serious dating. Any man will see over 95% of women looks fat, ugly or not his type at PlentyOfFish. PlentyOfFish is mostly for casual daters, for fun, for flirting, for entertainment purposes, for instant gratification and not for serious daters looking for a long term relationship with commitment.
2) Mr. Markus Frind is the one & only person who exactly knows how PlentyOfFish is constructed/developed. There is no technical / operating manual, software documentation of its proprietary algorithms. PlentyOfFish performs as a behavioral recommendation engine based on past actions.
3) More than 30% of PlentyOfFish users, paid regularly to a paying online dating site. They want to use PlentyOfFish for free, paying with precious time, but they paid with money to other sites.
4) The 2010 annual revenue of PlentyOfFish is expected to be USD 30 millions but more than 90% of the ads displayed at PlentyOfFish are from .. guess .. paying online dating sites like Match. If I use the Mozilla Firefox with Adblock Plus addon I do not see ANY ads at PlentyofFish. What will happen if all users decide to browse PlentyofFish with Mozilla Firefox with Adblock Plus addon? The CTR of the ads goes to 0%?
5) There is no need to sign any NDA to check PlentyOfFish’s numbers. Mr. Markus Frind thinks PlentyOfFish is worth than USD 1,000 (one thousand) million, but if you (honestly) value a dotcom company with the 1.5Xrevenue rule, it is not more than (luckily) USD 45 million.
6) If Mr. Markus Frind sells PlentyOfFish to Match, he could move to another country/state, like California and launch … a new freemium online dating site, better than PlentyOfFish.
7) Since January 2009, traffic to all paid online dating sites had been declining, 15 months with traffic declining and continues == “the Online Dating Fatigue Phenomenon”
Daters had understood that the entire Online Dating Industry for serious daters in 1st World Countries is a HOAX, performing as a Big Online Casino.
Daters got tired of being scammed with “automatic renewal” of their subscriptions and other “credit-card billing trickery”.
Free sites like PlentyOfFish and OkCupid are steady, it seems not growing any more.
Match, Chemistry, True, eHarmony, PerfectMatch, Be2, Parship, Meetic and other paid sites need to wake up and innovate. Or die and leave room for new opportunities.
It will be more profitable for Match to try to destroy PlentyOfFish than to try to acquire it.

Markus – you have the highest profile but I’m pretty sure you don’t have the most money 😉
There are companies across the pond controlled by individuals – we may be a bit more modest about our earnings that’s all 😉

Traffic is a very important meter, the measure in pass-through volume is exactly the indicator of the successful web site. The numbers speak for themselves in this case. Here we have an outlet supply, with exactly the right price, filling the specific need in these economic conditions. As for the time, the fare is proper for the ride. “A private coach, meet one, a public trolley, meet hundreds”.
