OPW – May 12 – While you were at lunch the Daily Deals industry grew to twice the size of the iDating industry! Really! It stands at twice the size of the idating industry in 2011, with revenues in excess of $2.6 Billion. We (at Courtland Brooks, and with thanks to Marc Porcelli) think this industry is so important and relevant to idating that we've created a new blog so you can monitor it. This is a major new category of advertiser that fits idating like a glove. You can sign up and get your Daily Deals daily news summaries at Daily Deals Observer.
This post also appears on SocialNetworkingWatch.

The Daily Deals industry is a completely different business, so you are comparing apples to oranges. Sure, dating companies are trying to work with various daily deals companies, but otherwise, there is no connection.
It is easy to have great revenues when you are selling consumer items like groceries or spa treatments or professional photo services or even go-kart racing (got one today for that, but too far from me, otherwise I’d buy:). I think this business is great, as they have great deals, e.g. I recently got 50% off meat purchases and just last week got two of my vehicles detailed for only $50 (it wasn’t worth much more, actually, based on their work; I wouldn’t recommend that one).
However, to say this new business is twice the size of the dating business is meaningless. The iPhone is a lot bigger, too. Yes, we have an iPhone app, as do others, but you wouldn’t talk about how much bigger the smart phone market is than dating, as if to imply we were all in the wrong business and somehow missing out.

The Social Networking and Daily Deals businesses should be an inspiration to the idating industry. They’re very different businesses, but still close enough to be relevant and an inspiration to the level and nature of innovation we’re driving.
Has anyone tried running Daily Deals offers on their dating site? With the level of targeting we can do, this should be a very nice fit.
