Ross Williams: When Is The Right Time To Sell?

Posted on May 3, 2011

Ross williams2 GLOBAL PERSONALS BLOG – May 3 - It has become increasingly difficult for independently-owned dating companies to profitably and ethically acquire traffic in this marketplace, when competing with VC-backed entrants like Zoosk or IAC portfolio companies like Match, Singlesnet, Peoplemedia or OKCupid, says Ross Williams, CEO of WhiteLabelDating.com, a subsidiary of Global Personals, a software company that enables partners to set up their own branded, online dating sites.

It is difficult to remain profitable against these companies when you manage your development, hosting, customer support, database, CRM etc in-hous. This is why many dating site operators are deciding either to sell or to move their sites to a white label platform.

But when is the right time to sell?
Quite simply – when you don’t need to. You’ll get the maximum value from your business when it’s still growing, when you’re showing profitability and you can demonstrate future growth. I see too many dating sites looking to sell when the owner is simply jumping from a sinking ship. They’ve lost and they realised it too late.

As a buyer, what do we look for in a dating site?
We look to see where we can add value and where we can eliminate overheads. Through our WhiteLabelDating.com platform, we’re able to pretty much eliminate development, hosting and customer care costs as it is shared with all our partners. We’ll also consider a talent acquisition. Most buyers will consider a buy vs build approach – up to a certain point, it makes sense for them to buy a competitor, beyond that it makes more sense to build their own proposition and steal that niche, technology or marketing strategy.

Monetize Your Dating Site With Groupon

Posted on May 3, 2011

Intelligentelite logoIDEA – May 2 – Dr Eike Post, founder of Intelligent Elite, a matchmaking dating site, came up with an idea to monetize his dating platform with Groupon, the daily deals site. Intelligent Elite is already talking to Groupon and other group buying platforms and negotiating 59-70% commission. They are going to sell discounted deals from Groupon that are related to group activities. What are your thoughts?

A New Kind Of Love Story

Posted on May 3, 2011

Mobile-dating1 AD WEEK – May 3 – Not so long ago, you’d assume that a girl alone at a bar on a Friday night, furiously thumbing her smartphone, had been stood up. Now, thanks to apps like meetMoi NOW, SinglesAroundMe, and Skout, she could just be planning her evening’s assignation. While dating sites sift and sort according to compatibility, apps pre-screen for something else: instant availability. There’s another name for the inefficiency these apps eliminate: courtship. They might dance around it, but what the apps are really offering is the ability to order up sex on demand. One of the pioneering location-based apps is Grindr. Launched in 2009, it allows gay men to locate other nearby users. It claims ~1M users. The developers of Badoo, Facebook’s fastest-growing third-party app, liken its ambiance to a club. Friend.ly makes the search for love a more convivial experience by quizzing users about friends and interests. It has ~4M monthly active users. Among the newer apps is Singlesquare, a Foursquare offshoot launched in Jan.

Mark Brooks: Finally, location aware apps are gaining significant traction. Facebook has driven people to be more willing to share private info. The tech is now mature. Apple has driven the smart phone into ubiquity. iDating will morph considerably now.

(Full Disclosure: Friend.ly is a former client of Courtland Brooks)

Harvard Runs eHarmony Vs Match Survey On Misrepresentation

Posted on May 3, 2011

Eharmony match loga OPW – May 3 – A little birdie tells us that Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society is running a survey on iDating on Survey Monkey here.

1. What online dating sites do you currently subscribe to?
2. Why did you subscribe to this/these site(s)?
3. Do you think eHarmony subscribers have a greater likelihood to be more honest in their profiles because of the extensive survey questions they’re required to answer versus users on a site like Match.com where subscribers can say whatever they want in their profiles?
4. Do you think the format of user profiles — and the extent to which users can choose which information they want to fill out in these profiles — affects how honest or deceptive people are on the dating site you use currently?
5. Based on the current dating site you subscribe to, do you think the structure (the way the site is designed) influences fellow subscribers to be more honest or more deceptive in their profiles?
6. How accurately does the content in your profile represent you?
Answers (scale: 1 to 5: 1 being inaccurate, 5 being 100% accurate)
7. Are you satisfied with the dating site you currently subscribe to?
8. On the site you currently subscribe to, do you believe others misrepresent themselves to any degree?
9. Do you think the site you currently subscribe to uses false (i.e. paid actors to talk about their dating services) advertisements in their marketing campaigns?
10. How would you identify your gender?
11. How would you identify your current relationship status?
12. How would you identify your sexual orientation?
13. Are there any dating sites you refuse to subscribe to?
14. Do you have any comments or feedback regarding this survey, the site you belong to or anything else regarding online dating?

Update – this was for a Harvard Extension School course.

Zendeux To Protect Dating Site Users From Violent Crime

Posted on May 2, 2011

Credibilityreport logo PR WEB – May 2 – “It’s impossible for a company with a million subscribers to do a thorough background search on people and of course Match.com doesn’t want to give a false sense of security,” said Robert Platt, Match.com's attorney. Match.com was pressured to background screen its members because of a law suit. Zendeux’s solution is a “Credibility Passport” which is offered on their web site TheCredibilityReport.com. This new site enables users of online dating sites to perform background screenings of potential dating candidates while protecting the personal information of both parties.

What Effect Has The Internet Had On Finding Love?

Posted on May 2, 2011

Aleks-007 GUARDIAN.CO.UK – May 1 – "Online dating used to be something that people turned to when they were giving up on offline dating," says Sam Yagan, CEO and co-founder of OKCupid, a site that has the largest registered user-base of 18- to 34-year-olds in the US. "It is now a tool that people are turning to, to complement their offline dating." Research from the Oxford Internet Institute's "Me, My Spouse and the Internet: Meeting, Dating and Marriage in the Digital Age" project corroborates Yagan's argument, reporting that 22.6% of current relationships in the UK began online. Yagan thinks relationships that come from online dating are more likely to stick: instead of settling for one person out of a pool of 200, he argues, you'll be assured that the one you've chosen out of two million is the best fit.

Skype Brings Couples Together

Posted on May 2, 2011

Skype logo POSTMEDIA NEWS – Apr 29 – When Leonardo Baroncini and Susan were dating, they appreciated the little things -brushing their teeth together, watching each other sleep – which helped to develop their emotional bonds. And because the couple met and dated for six months online, they did these things over Skype. "Video communication makes online dating richer and a more valuable and comprehensive experience," Susan says. Skype had 663M registered users in 2010 and last month it hit a new record: 30M people were online at the same time. Meanwhile, 24M users are registered with ooVoo, and 1M users join every month.
