DIGITAL LIFE – Aug 10 - Extramarital "dating" service Ashley Madison.com has crossed the 10 million-member mark worldwide. Twitter Dating: Even in 140 Characters, Love Can Bloom
BALTIMORE SUN – Aug 9 - Yes, Twitter love. It’s happening. Love shows up in unexpected places online. Several dating services and relationship coaches are geared to the social media platform. “Social media has a big role to play in dating because social media is all about connections and communication, and dating is the same thing,” said Ben Parr, editor at large at Mashable. “Twitter will always have a role just as Facebook has a role in dating … and the entire relationship cycle.” Some Twitter-based services, like Luv@FirstTweet, which launched this year, cater to those used to traditional online dating services like Match.com. ~1,200 people are currently signed up for Luv@FirstTweet, a free service that co-founder Jon Lehr bills as “building an online dating profile on the go.” Some would argue the Twitter dating pool may be a bit shallower than general. A recent poll by OkCupid found that people who use Twitter tend to have shorter relationships.

DuoDater Wants to Make Online Dating More Social
TECH CRUNCH – Aug 8 - Michael Parikh and Andrew Flachner, the co-founders of a new dating site DuoDater, agree that there are still some very fundamental problems with current approaches to online dating. Creating an online dating profile can be difficult. DuoDater is aimed at men and women in their 20s and 30s who are looking to socialize and meet new people — with the help of a co-pilot. The co-founders think that, by allowing users to have a friend by their side while on a date, the interaction can be more natural and less awkward way to socialize and make friends.

Profile Pictures on Social Networks ‘Are a Privacy Risk’
COMPUTER WORLD – It's becoming easier for strangers to identify people and infer detailed information about them from their publicly available images on sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn. Alessandro Acquisti, associate professor of IT and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College, used a facial recognition tool called Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition (PittPatt) developed at CMU to see whether he could find matches between the dating site images and the Facebook profile pictures. ~5,800 dating site members also had Facebook profiles. Of these, more ~4,900 were uniquely identified. The numbers are significant because a previous CMU survey showed that 90% of Facebook members use their real name on their profiles.
