CNET NEWS – Nov 15 - The U.S. Department of Justice is defending computer hacking laws that make it a crime to use a fake name on Facebook or lie about your weight in an online dating profile. Rhe Justice Department argues that it must be able to prosecute violations of Web sites' often-ignored, always-unintelligible "terms of service" policies. The law in question, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, has been used by the Justice Department to prosecute a woman who used a fake MySpace account to verbally attack a 13-year old girl who then committed suicide.

20,000 Chinese Seek Partners At World’s Biggest Dating Fair
VANCOUVER SUN – Nov 14 - On a sunny day on the outskirts of Shanghai on Sunday, 20,000 hopeful, curious and in some cases desperate Chinese gathered for the world's largest dating event. At least a third of the attendees were parent. For China's bachelors, the obligation to buy their brides a marital home weighs heavily. The government has tinkered with the law to dissuade women from marrying for money, rather than love, but there was little sign on Sunday that the message had sunk in. For many couples, the money for the house and car comes from the parents, giving those wandering the fair plenty of influence when it comes to picking their in-laws.

Love, Lies And What They Learned
NY TIMES – Nov 13 – There are millions of Americans seeking love on the Internet. Little do they know that teams of scientists are eagerly watching them trying to find it. These scholars have gathered data from sites like Match.com, OkCupid and Yahoo! Personals to study attraction, trust, deception. ~81% of people misrepresent their height, weight or age in their profiles, according to a study led by an assistant professor Catalina L. Toma. In a different study she found that women’s profile photographs were on average a year and a half old. Men’s were on average six months old. Liars use more negative words like “not” and “never,” yet another way of putting up a buffer. Liars use fewer negative emotion words like “sad” and “upset,” and they write shorter online personal essays.
