THE GLOBE AND MAIL – Dec 16 - KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is introducing “Meet & Seat,” a service that lets passengers pick their seatmates in advance based on shared interests stated on their Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. Malaysia Airlines has already launched a similar service on Facebook, letting passengers find out which friends might be taking the same flight. Virgin Atlantic has also shown interest in the scheme.

As there would be such a relatively small sample of people in the passenger list of a flight I can’t see how this is ever going to be any real use. Interesting though, all the same!

Building community in the skies. Personally, I relish the time I have sitting doing nothing when flying. It would be nice to connect with like-minded people at the same time. Great idea!

I had exactly this idea a few months ago but realised that only the airlines could really make it happen.
Makes total sense especially for a long haul flight. Not just for dating though but sitting with somebody who might be more fun or interesting to sit with, than a large family with babies or people who speak no English…
Could of course be a bit awkward if after a few minutes you wanted to get a very long way away for from that person, after you had actually elected to sit with them.
Decades ago when travelling was cool and exclusive people used to meet each other on planes all the time. And before that on long sea voyages, it was part of the service and part of the literature of the time. Plus ca change..
