The 5 Stages Of Social Media Maturity

Forrester research logoPR DAILY – Dec 12 - Thanks to Forrester Research, we now have a succinct model that enables companies to identify where they stand in terms of social media maturity and adoption. Trying to jump from the dormant phase to the empowering phase too fast might have horrifying effects on a brand. It can lead to mixed messaging, social media faux pas, duplication of efforts, and incorrect budgeting. Sean Corcoran of Forrester Research takes the social media maturity model a step further by defining personae for companies moving through the model. He identifies them as:

    • Laggards – He estimates 20% of companies are not using any social media
    • Late majority – Corcoran describes this persona as “distributed chaos” and recommends that a senior digital marketing manager step in to be the “shepherd” that coordinates efforts.
    • Early majority – consists of management that recognizes the risks and rewards of social media use
    • Early adopters –  Have already coordinated social organization and is now focused on optimizing social media activities. (Starbucks, Best Buy, and Coca Cola)
    • Innovators – have all relevant employees trained and empowered to use social media.

Dating Stocks To Go Steady With

StockSMART MONEY – Dec 12 – Of singles over 18 years old, 43% have browsed online dating sites, equating to 40M active U.S. accounts and ~600M visits per month, according to Mashable. Several publicly traded companies compete for online daters. But just like dates themselves, not all are worth your time or investment dollars. The strongest stock also happens to be the biggest. IAC/InterActiveCorp dominates the category with a 20% market share, according to Online Personals Watch. Significantly smaller but potentially more lucrative than IAC is Spark Networks. Last month, Spark Networks reported a 28% boost in YOY revenue and a 30% increase in paying subscribers. While the U.S. has over 40M active online dating accounts, China has more than three times that amount. Jiayuan.com, China's largest dating site, listed on the NASDAQ in May. Despite doubling the number of active paying accounts since 2010, the stock has cratered in the past month.

Q: What’s your male-to-female ratio?
A: In what I call Viagra generation of 50 years old and older, the ratio is probably four men to every woman. 30 and under, it’s one to one.

Q: You think the obstacle to growing your membership is purely based on your access to a new audience via advertising channels?
A: Absolutely. I didn’t create infidelity, and it happens. I can’t convince people to be unfaithful. What I can convince them is, if they decide to have an affair, not to do it in the workplace, not to do it on a singles site, not to do it on Facebook. To do it on Ashley Madison.

Q: Of those 11M members, how many are paying?
A: Fair question. Almost 95% of people who purchase credits end up being men. So to answer your question, 6-7M people have purchased credits.

Q: You also “guarantee” your affairs. Do you get a lot of requests for refunds?
A: Eleven in the history of Ashley Madison.

Q: You also offer same-sex connections. Are you seeing material numbers there?
A: We have 350K women who are married seeking relationships with other women, and ~250K men seeking relationships with other men.

Q: Your reaction to finding out your wife had an affair, is 'you'd be devastated.'  Is your philosophy of affairs "what you don’t know won’t hurt you"?
A: You have to believe in free will and that inanimate objects don’t cause people to do things. We get divorced more often than we stay together. When it comes to marriage, we have a broken paradigm. We tell people that you should be monogamous, and we have to be like this, but we mostly fail at it, and we find these couples who have the courage to talk about it, changing their lives, getting into open marriages — and their divorce rate plummets.

BBC Radio 4: You&Yours – The Business Of Online Dating

Global Personals logoBBC RADIO 4 – Dec 7 – BBC Radio 4 has interviewed Mark Brooks; Ross Williams, CEO of GlobalPersonals.co.uk (WhiteLabelDating) and Marc Lesnick, the organizer of iDate. Mark Brooks said: "Worldwide the online dating industry stands at over $3.5 billion. But when you consider it in terms of the social impact online dating has, there’s an incredible impact and potential for the future." Ross Williams claims to be the CEO of the biggest dating company in Europe with £ 30M revenue per year. Global Personals now hosts more than 6K white label sites and has won 3 awards in the industry equivalent of the Oscars – iDate Awards. Marc Lesnick organizes the event and iDate awards nominations for next year’s awards which will be held in January have just been announced.

The online dating world is about to change again. Some sites are already offering a mobile dating App. From your location it can tell you if anyone is single, available and suitable nearby. Mark Brooks explains: "Singles can have it all. They can be sitting in a coffee shop on a Friday afternoon and decide they want to go on a date and they can see who’s around them. I believe it is the next stage for online dating."

Ross Williams:
"The importance of mobile isn’t so much on the location element. Instead of sending messages from your computer you can do it from your phone."
