The IceBreak iPhone App Helps Couples Keep The Flame Alive

Posted on December 9, 2011

Icebreal app screenshotsINTOMOBILE – Dec 8 - IceBreak is a new app for Couples that helps couples discovering new things about their relationship, and going out and doing activities together. For instance, it will present couples with personality-type questions to answer like “What’s your ideal Sunday morning together?” Moreover, couples will be prompted to privately snap and share pictures of their day with each other, so that they get a glimpse into each other’s days even when they are apart. In addition, IceBreak will also help its users remember important information like clothing sizes, anniversaries, ring sizes and birthdays.

BBC 4 Radio Interview

Posted on December 9, 2011

Listen to the interview here

According to a recent survey people looking for love would rather meet online than in a bar.

Mark Brooks from Online Personals Watch says: “Worldwide the online dating industry stands at over $3.5 billion. But when you consider it in terms of the social impact online dating has, there’s an incredible impact and potential for the future.”

Ross Williams is the CEO of the biggest dating company in Europe.
“I run Global Personals, based in Windsor, we have 100 staff and we run the dating site operation for most of the dating sites in the UK. The company now has 14 websites including Justwidoweddating and Justdivorcedsingles, catering for very specific markets.

But 80% of Global Personal’s income is from White Label sites. They provide the technology, customer care and database for other brands to put their label on the site and
market it to consumers.

“In the last 8 years we have gone from nothing to 30M pounds revenue a year”, Ross says.

Global Personals now hosts more than 6,000 white label sites and has won 3 awards in the industry equivalent of the Oscars. iDate awards nominations for next year’s awards which will be held in January have just been announced. Marc Lesnick organizes the event.

The winners are chosen by the public and the executive alliance which is made up of 450 CEO’s of dating companies. Some of them are now offering free online dating. Sites like Badoo which has 129M members in more than 80 countries.

Mark Brooks from OPW thinks that there is a place for both but believes that you will get more from a paid site:
“There’s kind of a filtering affect in terms of seriousness when someone puts down their credit card. It demonstrates that they are not only single but they are motivated, it shows commitment to the process and that they are active.”

“You can search our sites for free but you have to pay to send/receive messages”, says Ross Williams:
“The actions we take to protect our consumers against scammers, people are willing to pay 50p/1pound a day for that.”

The company has computer programmes that scan every message for signs it could be send from a fraudster.

For those still searching the online dating world is about to change again. Some sites are already offering an App. From your location it can tell you if anyone is single, available and suitable nearby.

Mark Brooks from Online Personals Watch explains:
“Singles can have it all. They can be sitting in a coffee shop on a Friday afternoon and decide they want to go on a date and they can see who’s around them. I believe it is the next stage for online dating.”

Ross Williams:
“The importance of mobile isn’t so much on the location/where element. Whilst that is important its simply that instead of sending messages from your computer you can do them from your phone.”

IAC/Interactive, Barry Diller Pursue Online Dates

Posted on December 8, 2011

Iac logoINVESTOR.COM – Dec 8 - The company's acquisition in May of Europe's Meetic.com, and its purchase of a 20% stake in China's Zhenai in September, are the latest confirmations that IAC and Diller covet online dating. For Meetic, IAC spent 15 Eur ($21), a share to boost its ownership to 80% from 27%. The shares, traded on the Euronext Paris exchange, were valued at 13.50 at the time, so IAC paid a 56% premium. IAC's dating sites are among its most profitable assets, says Needham & Co. analyst Kerry Rice. In the Q3, IAC reported that its online dating revenue rose 25% to $132.3M.

Hornet: Gay App On The Buzz

Posted on December 7, 2011
Hornet logoTIME OUT – Dec 7 - A new dating app is hitting the LGBT scene. Developed in Hong Kong and San Francisco, Hornet operates much like Grindr. Setting up a Hornet account requires users to state their HIV status. If you choose ‘negative’, the app requests the date of your last doctor’s visit. Hornet will then send you a reminder when it’s time for your next HIV testing. Hornet is still in its beta phase – it’s slow, it crashes and chats aren’t uploaded properly. But it does have a lot of potential and provides interesting features that rivals lack.

BeautifulPeople.com Thrown Off eBay For Auctioning Date With The Virgin Mary

Posted on December 7, 2011

Beautifulpeople logo newTELEGRAPH.CO.UK – Dec 7 - BeautifulPeople.com encouraged men to bid for a date with blonde Heather Seychelle, 25, shown dressed in a "sexy" Mary outfit. Miss Seychelle appears in the dating site's nativity scene and attracted hordes of male fans. Controllers at eBay pulled the listing – complaining it contained "adult content". Greg Hodge, managing director of the site, said: "eBay accused us of posting adult content onto their website – but we simply uploaded portrait photos of our nativity stars as they appear on our home page in the hope we'd raise money for charity.

Will Controversial Regulation Prevent Dating Abuse?

Posted on December 7, 2011

Personal dating agent logoIB TIMES – Dec 7 – Horrifying tales of dating abuse prompt governments across the world to introduce controversial regulations which mandate criminal background checks for every user signing up with dating agencies. "State regulation is important in order to protect individuals from scammers and criminals", said the founders of Personal Dating Agent (PDA) Alexandre Errera and Maxime Leufroy-Murat. "Although we can perform background checks on our clients, but we cannot do the same for their dates," the duo said. In the U.K. there are signs of a Clare's Law being introduced in the near future that will grant women access to the criminal history to new partners in order to allow women to know if a partner be violent or abusive.

How Badoo Got 130 Million People And $100M In Revenue

Posted on December 6, 2011

Badoo logoTECH CRUNCH – Dec 6 – Badoo has recently reached 130M registered users and now brings in $100M a year. Badoo would be the 4th biggest social network if it was just a social network. But Badoo adapts to the local needs of its international user base. In the UK it’s used for casual dating, in the Czech Republic it’s a marriage site, and in Indonesia burqa-clad women find self-expression on the site. While it can be tempting to gate some crucial features behind a pay wall, Badoo decided to make all of its core functionality free. While it was growing to a scale where it could support itself, Badoo took $30M in funding. Now it doesn’t need to take additional funding rounds. To reach its $100M in yearly revenues, though, Badoo lets users pay to be more visible and learn who they should try to start a conversation with.
