Interview With Rachel DeAlto, CEO Of FlipMe

Posted on March 6, 2012

Rachel DeAltoOPW INTERVIEW – Mar 6 – FlipMe has an interesting angle on idating. Cards. Others have tried before, but her business is catching on. The press like her style. The cards are funny, and she's coined the term 'flirting retail product.' – Mark Brooks

Why FlipMe? What's your founding story?
The concept for FlipMe started back in 2008. My last relationship of 8 years was an almost missed connection. I was having lunch with my parents, and he was having lunch with colleagues. We made eye contact, but it was an awkward situation to make a move. Instead of letting the moment slip by, he passed a note through the waitress after his table left. FlipMe was started to avoid those missed connections, and facilitate a way for people to connect in any situation. We spent several years doing the legal (patents, trademarks, etc) and financial legwork.

How do you make money?
We are the only flirting retail product of its kind. Our packs are designed to be an impulse purchase at retail and hospitality locations. The packs of cards (each pack is $25 retail and includes 30 cards and a 6-month subscription) are sold online and at retail locations nationwide.

Others have tried this before, how is your business more enduring?
We are not looking to replace online dating, and we recognize that we are an accessory, a tool. Our goal is to make dating and flirting fun again, and make it almost like a game. Our ability to be sold at retail is also a huge advantage.

Do you have a way to work with idating companies?
We would love to connect with idating companies to offer the cards as a complement to their sites. There are many ways to co-brand and even integrate the profiles/landing pages. We are open to all possibilities. I think our company offers the perfect compliment to most online dating sites as it brings the best of both worlds – a way for people to safely connect with others online AND off.

How's sales?
Sales are steady. We get some great surges with press – our feature in Cosmopolitan Magazine this month (attached) was a great boost. I also do flirting and dating coaching so when I am called on as an expert in the media, sales benefit as well. Right now we are working to integrate with the hospitality sector which could be huge.

What surprises have you had as you've grown your business?
Everything has been a surprise! I think the best surprise has been the love from the media. We have been blessed with a great response to the concept by the press. Also surprising was how quickly similar companies sprouted up. This is why I always remind people of the importance of patent protection (as a lawyer myself legal barriers to entry is a non-negotiable).

What's your goals for 2012?
Our goals are to find strategic partners in the dating and hospitality industry to place the product. We also have plans to develop the site itself into a forum and destination for single women to engage, learn and communicate.

Badoo – The Hook-up Social Network With $150M In Revenue

Posted on March 5, 2012

Badoo logoTELEGRAPH.CO.UK – Mar 5 – Badoo is a social network that allows users to seek out new friends nearby. Ask its users, and they are more likely to tell you it’s a “hook-up site”. Like Grindr, the gay dating app, it uses location tracking systems in smartphones to enable customers to search for suitors close by. Badoo founder Andrey Andreev insists that the two services are miles apart. Badoo is more like a “telephone bar”, where he first hatched the idea, he says. In the telephone bar, customers are seated at numbered tables with telephones, which they use to ring up anyone else in the bar that attracts their attention. “There are more people that you don’t know than that you know,” Andreev says. “It is mainly about meeting new people for any type of adventure. According to Badoo, 12% of users have got into a serious relationship with someone they’ve met on the site, and 2% have subsequently got married. The app is free to use and there is no advertising, per se. Instead it makes its money from users effectively advertising themselves. A £1 payment will shoot them to the top of the site until the next user knocks them off – usually a couple of seconds – or they can pay to push their way up other users’ inboxes of messages by buying a virtual present. Its annual revenues now tip over $150m (£95m), and it has been in profit for the last two years. Andreev insists he has no intention of selling. “We are not sure about IPO, but never say never.

Cash-rich Sugar Daddies Meet Goal Seeking Sugar Babies

Posted on March 5, 2012

Seekingarrangement brandon wadeQQ MAGAZINE – Mar 2 - SeekingArrangement.com is a dating site set up by 41-year-old MIT graduate Brandon Wade in 2006 that acts as a "fixer" for "modern sugar daddies" and "goal-seeking sugar babies". The site has now ~ 600K paying members. Many claiming these "arrangements" amount to little more than solicitation and prostitution. "The site started because of my own personal frustrations with meeting women online," Brandon explains. "I wanted to create a site where I could meet beautiful, open-minded women – simple as that. The stereotypical notions of gold-digging women and lecherous old men just don't apply any more." Over 80% of female members online have a college degree – these women aren't dumb. They all have goals. "Gentlemen are a dying breed, especially in America. There's this feeling that women have gone through a lot to fight for feminist rights, and now they are, indeed, equals. But they've lost something along the way. In becoming equals, so the etiquette of being a traditional gentleman – standing up when they enter, opening doors, paying for dinner on the first date – has been lost. This is what draws a lot of women to the site, and I think being taken care of by a stronger man is – deep down – what a lot of women really long for."
