APPRENEUR-DIARIES.COM – Oct 12 – Blendr (the straight version of Grindr) has just launched on Android. After checking out both Blendr’s and Badoo's description, one can see that they are almost the same. Actually, the screenshots of the app are the same and the app themselves are exactly the same. If you download both apps and sign in both, it actually tells you in one that you have already been signed in the other. Furthermore, the apps look exactly the same and the people around you are the same, too.

Without any venture funding, we as a start-up have developed and successfully marketed two successful apps that are both enjoying considerable growth. We decided to pull in additional back-end resources to help us grow Blendr internationally and chose to partner with Badoo for this.
Badoo and Blendr will remain two separate apps, but from now on, Badoo will provide us with the back-end resources and infrastructure, in addition to providing some additional features that our users will love.

Hi Joel. I understand what you did with Blendr. You needed to monetize the venture, and opportunities for that don’t come around every day. However, many, many people I know (many of whom I met through Blender), lament its demise. Had you given us the choice of a tiered monthly fee structure (I would have paid $30, while others would have paid $5) versus Blender going away entirely as we know it, I would have had my credit card in my hand ready to go. Badoo is not Blender. Not even close. It’s an overly controlled cesspool of spammers. I understand if Blendr was undercapitalized and couldn’t last long enough to get traction. Just know that tons of people LOVED it, and that the memory still lingers. There may still be time to bring the old version back (though I imagine you’re legally handcuffed from doing so after a deal with Badoo.)
