Life As An OkCupid Moderator

Posted on October 22, 2012

Okcupid logo aktualniHUFFINGTON POST – Oct 22 - Christopher Cantwell
never asked to become a moderator of online dating site OkCupid. Many
OkCupid moderators are pulled from the site’s userbase and just six
months after signing up for the singles site. They review posts flagged
by OkCupid users and are tasked with marking the profiles “deleted,”
“left alone” or “can’t tell.” Moderators can see comments from other
moderators and how they ruled on an issue, but not who those moderators
are or what ultimately happened to each of the posts in question.

Q: What did you have to do to become qualified to be a moderator?
A: Absolutely nothing.  They notified me that I had been made a moderator.

Q: What kinds of things do you see getting flagged?
A: Users can flag a profile and then the
profile gets put into what’s basically a queue for the moderators to go
through. And most of it is kind of frivolous.

Q: It’s remarkable that people have access to private messages, in some cases, and get to weigh in on them.
A: Yes, it is.

Q: What have you learned about people since being a moderator on OkCupid?
A: I’ve learned that people are nitpicking and if they see something they don’t like, they’ll flag it for no good reason.

Q: What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen during your time as a moderator?
A: I’ve seen some nude photos, but I’m no stranger to that, and I’ve seen scammers.

Q: What would you do when you came across something illegal?
A: In the case of child porn, we would contact the FBI.

Tawkify – Offline Internet Dating, Kind Of

Posted on October 22, 2012

Tawkify kenneth shawTHE SOCIABLE – Oct 21 – Tawkify pitches itself as online dating with a difference. There are no advanced computer algorithms that pair users together based on interests. Users sign-up to Tawkify, fill in some basic profile information and Tawkify’s small team of matchmakers get to work. Potential matches are brought together in a 10 minute phone conversation initiated by Tawkify – without seeing a profile image of each other. Depending on the success of that short conversation, users can decide to schedule a date (somewhat blind) or request a rematch.

There Is More Money To Be Made In The Market For True Love

Posted on October 22, 2012

Alex mehr venture beat postVENTURE BEAT – Oct 21 – This is a guest post by entrepreneur Alex Mehr (Zoosk). People’s relationship statuses change, which makes it difficult to keep customers long-term. Zoosk saw an opportunity to overcome the challenge of customer retention, and created a service for people in relationships. Companies must now offer different tools to users at every stage of their romantic journey. Several new services have popped up that offer private social networking for couples. "By expanding our services beyond dating, we’ve been able to create more brand loyalty and have also built stronger relationships with our users", said Alex Mehr.

LTR.com And eRomance For Sale

Posted on October 22, 2012

Forsale pictureOPW – Oct 21 - David Siegel has been trying for years to raise enough money to start LTR.com, his project for long-term online dating. Unfortunately, he has been unsuccessful in raising money and is now interested in selling the domain and associated logo. He also has the associated domain LTR.co, which would be included, and a few other assets. He would welcome a deal where he can participate in building a new business in this space, and he is also willing to just sell the domain outright ($80K or best offer). David is willing to work with a buyer on terms and payment schedule. Please contact David directly if you are interested.

eRomance.com dating site is also for sale. The site has been online since 2006 and receives ~20-25k monthly unique visitors. The asking price is $125K. eromance.net, eromance.co.uk, eromance.mobi and e-romance.com are included. For additional information please contact Stephen May.

Update: eRomance has been sold.

How Cruise Ship Singer Found Love At AnastasiaDate.com

Posted on October 22, 2012

Anastasiadate logoMIRROR.CO.UK – Oct 9 – Singer Wayne Denton tried AnastasiaDate.com, a Ukrainian online dating site, and found himself a new wife almost half his age. Wayne had to pay to send her a message and to read emails she sent him. If he wanted to see any pictures she sent, he had to pay for them as well. Wayne had a niggling doubt that it could all be a scam. The agency offered a video date service. “It cost £30 for 10 minutes and because she didn’t speak any English we had to use a translator. "The 10 minutes turned into 40 minutes, which was expensive." After two months and £500 spent talking to Iuliia online, Wayne decided to meet her and flew to her home city of Mariupol in October 2010. At the end of his second visit he proposed and Iuliia accepted.
