FORBES – Jan 11 - OkCupid’s most popular blogs
posts were read by millions of people, and that was excluding existing
OkCupid users. Startups who are hoping to fill in the “how do we grow?”
blank by saying “Well, we’ll just write a blog, like OkCupid did.” Maybe
hire a “data scientist.” But:
- OkCupid’s blog worked because they had sexy data.
- Christian Rudder, an amazing writer who also studied math at Harvard,
wrote the blog. The posts each took him four to eight weeks of full-time
work.

A really, really good point. PR-worthy surveys are very tough to do. They take a very significant contribution of time. Surveys are fairly easy to run, but getting interesting results that make the cut with press…that’s tough. OKCupid has set a shining example not only to the idating industry, but in the blogosphere and to many other industries.
Be interesting, get press. Be lackluster, and you’ll just spin your wheels.
