JAPAN DAILY PRESS – Jan 17 – Seven people from Fukuoka Prefecture have been arrested and charged with fraud. They are suspected to have operated an online dating service that used fake profiles and made off with US$ 22M. The dating site, named DEAiBBS, went online in 2005 and advertised that it had around 120K users. Investigations led by the police revealed that 80% of that number may not be real people.

Wow, we have 120,000 real members but the $22 Million figure is still a dream. If they had 20,000 real members, that’s an average of $1,000 each. While it sounds like they were morally quite far off, from a marketing perspective they must have had some savvy. Even a few percent of that amount per user, with real users, would be a workable business.
