New Dating Sites Let You Meet People Through Friends

Posted on January 14, 2013

Love onlineMASHABLE – Jan 13 – Sites like Friendlylook, TheDatable and Circl.es let you browse your friends' friends. With Friendlylook, users have the ability to create private social events to meet people in real life. Members also have a "singles stream," that is kind of like a Facebook News Feed. Currently, the team behind Friendlylook is seeking funds on Indiegogo, the crowd-funding platform, in order to build more features. Circl.es and TheDatable have similar ideas — except with these sites you actually connect with Facebook to see friends of your friends.

Posted on January 12, 2013

OPW – Jan 9 – After entering mine and Irena's contact info HAW presented me with a list of date ideas called the 'DateBook.' For a membership fee we can get up to 75% off every date in the 'collection.' We can go for Trivial Pursuit night hosted by Huffington Post, or various other games nights…drinking, eating, painting, and terrarium-building fun. The 'Built For Two Membership' is $22. Cool! But, that's it?

A Great Philosophy On How To Build A Startup

Posted on January 11, 2013

How-about-we-aaron-schildkrout-in-the-officeBUSINESS INSIDER – Jan 10 – At the end of the day, it's all about execution, not the idea. So far HowAboutWe is a success, raising $18.5M to date and hitting ~1M users since launching in April 2010. Co-Founder Aaron Schildkrout says it has everything to do with the process. "Brian and I did everything together. We were working 90 hours a week, but if you're not willing to do that, you shouldn't launch a startup. As a company leader you have to work diligently to avoid excessive siloing, and yet the more collaborative your environment is, the more complex your structures have to be. "As CEO you have a number of responsibilities, including making sure you have the right people. Make sure your personal contributions are the overall vision and overall company management. The obvious things are that you want people who are relentlessly driven and smart. Really talented people just don’t like to work inside broken processes. It feels dumb to them. Building a great process is very hard.

About OkCupid Blogging

Posted on January 11, 2013

Okcupid blog logoFORBES – Jan 11 - OkCupid’s most popular blogs
posts were read by millions of people, and that was excluding existing
OkCupid users. Startups who are hoping to fill in the “how do we grow?”
blank by saying “Well, we’ll just write a blog, like OkCupid did.” Maybe
hire a “data scientist.” But:

  • OkCupid’s blog worked because they had sexy data.
  • Christian Rudder, an amazing writer who also studied math at Harvard,
wrote the blog. The posts each took him four to eight weeks of full-time
    work.

ChristianMingle.com Growth

Posted on January 10, 2013

Christianmingle logoWASHINGTON POST – Jan 10 – ChristianMingle is owned by the same company, Spark Networks, that owns JDate, the wildly successful Jewish dating service. Indeed, JDate has been the engine behind ChristianMingle’s “God” campaign this year. Spark has plowed revenue generated by the older, more established JDate into promoting the Christian site. ChristianMingle is now the biggest of Spark’s 28 dating sites, each for a specific subset of singles. The company says ChristianMingle is the nation’s leading Christian-based dating site, with ~8M registered members. Spark Networks' Christian dating division had revenue of $22.9M during the first nine months of 2012, an increase of 111% over the same period the year before. (Its Jewish division had revenue of $19.4M, down 5%). Spark poured ~$30M into marketing and advertising for the division, more than double the year before. Overall, Spark lost $4.45M over the first three quarters of 2012 after a loss of $503K during the same period of 2011. ChristianCafe, which says it is the only Christian-owned dating site among the major players, has a marketing tie-in with Focus on the Family, the conservative Christian group founded by author and radio preacher James Dobson. Focus on the Family once had ties with eHarmony.com and its founder, Neil Clark Warren, but eHarmony has moved away from a Christian-centric approach in a bid for a broader market.

Sugar Daddy Site: It’s Better Than Sex Work

Posted on January 9, 2013

Seekingarrangement logoSALON – Jan 9 – According to SeekingArrangement.com lates press release, their sugar babies make more money than prostitutes. Seeking Arrangement makes the following calculations: “The average Sugar Baby dates 1-3 men annually, receiving an average yearly allowance of ~$36K. If a prostitute makes on average $250 per transaction, she would have to have sex with presumably 100 men, performing over 144 sexual transactions.”
