Tinder Co-Founder Highlights How The App Actually Took Over College Campuses

Posted on July 5, 2013

Tinder logoBOSTINNO – July 3 – Although no one can deny Tinder’s success with millennials, Huffington Post’s claim that one Tufts student was solely responsible for starting the fad—and then hosting parties the company paid for—was wrong. “It wasn’t accurate at all,” said Justin Mateen, Tinder co-founder and CMO, referencing the piece published Tuesday. “We did have college reps, but it was very casual. It was a three-day thing, and it’s kind of secret what we did.” The site has since substantially edited their article, now titled: “Here’s One of the College Kids Helping Tinder Take Over Campuses.”
“We believe in top-down marketing,” Mateen said, claiming the goal was to get “the right people” on board. Or, in more “politically correct” words, “Target the group that has the most influence over their peers."
“We tried to create an experience that emulates how the real world works,” Mateen said. “What lights up a conversation is physical appearance. If someone you don’t want approaches you, you can just ignore them and move out of the way.”

Mateen reports Tinder is now being used on every campus in the country, and is beginning to grow internationally. Now that students have adopted the app, however, a broader audience has started logging on. Upon launching, 75 percent of Tinder’s user base was between the ages of 18-24, according to Mateen. That number has since dropped to 67, with 25 percent of users now between the ages of 25-34.
Tinder has facilitated more than 80 million matches since launching in October. In the last few days alone, 1.25 million matches have been made daily, with more than 6.1 billion profiles having been created.

eHarmony Co-founder Talks Online Dating Over 80, Same-sex Marriage

Posted on July 3, 2013

Eharmony dr warren cbsCBS NEWS – July 2 – Started nearly 13 years ago, the online dating site eHarmony has
hit it off with many people, sparking the weddings of more than half-a-million
people, and five percent of marriages nationwide each year. But now the company
is experiencing success with a perhaps surprising growing demographic. Warren
said, "We've had 88,000 people over 80 apply to eHarmony. We only go to
99. We don't know of any over 100."

In addition to his company's success, Warren also discussed the controversy
surrounding his company's stance on same-sex relationships. Warren, asked if
they would have opened a separate same-sex relationship website on their own
without the discrimination lawsuit, said, "I doubt that we would have
because I didn't know anything about it."

And then turning to the subject of same-sex marriages, Warren said,
"Well, you know, that's been the biggest problem that we've had in America
for the last few years. It's kind of nice that it's kind of moving in the
direction now that it's taken care of. Now, we can turn to a much bigger issue:
We only have about 25 percent of all marriages that work. We need to get about
the task of figuring out how to make that 50 percent, 75 percent."

Cupid Cleared Over ‘Fake Profiles’

Posted on July 1, 2013

Cupidplc logo new dec 12THE INDEPENDENT – July 1 – Online dating group Cupid was today cleared of using fake profiles to lure new members but warned it needs to overhaul its operations. The Company said a review by KPMG found there was “no evidence” its staff were misleading registered members into becoming fully paid subscribers. However, KPMG said Cupid’s staff needed to identify themselves more clearly to customers in the future because their current methods “could potentially lead to confusion”. Cupid was also told to sharpen up its marketing, governance, technical controls and risk management. Cupid said: “The board is pleased to have concluded this review and will continue to innovate and enhance the customer experience, whilst taking steps to ensure its recommendations are implemented and policies and procedures and best practice are complied with.” Shares in the company rose by more than 6% on the back of the findings of the probe, which took KPMG two months to complete.

Posted on July 1, 2013

Ashleymadison japanWSJ/TOKYO REPORTER – July 1 – With more than 19 million anonymous members worldwide, the infidelity

country, first in Asia. In the first four days, The website had logged
230,000 visits and 70,000 members. The company
had targeted 100,000 members in the first month, and 1.2 million in the

Facebook’s Mobile App Install Ads Tool Is Helping AYI Acquire New Users

Posted on July 1, 2013

AYI areyouinterested logo new march 13MINYANVILLE – June 28 – Launched in 2007, AYI was one of the first dating applications on Facebook. Today, the app has 20 million Facebook-connected profiles. Thanks to Facebook's mobile ad apps launched last fall, the dating site is expanding further, particularly into mobile. Mobile is currently AYI’s fastest growing segment, with the Android app debuting in April (61,000 downloads as of June 11) and with the company’s iOS app getting a major overhaul last month (4 million downloads). Mobile logins account for 15% of daily AYI logins, but nearly one-third of new users are on mobile devices. Facebook’s Mobile App Install Ads tool also allows AYI to optimize the way it acquires new customers down to specific details. Explaining that process with an example, Cliff Lerner, CEO of Snap Interactive, the owner of AIY, said: "What this tool allows us to do is literally say: We want to [reach] a 30- to 40-year-old female who lives in New York City who's on an iOS device, and it will tell us how much it will cost, how much we’ll pay [to reach] that user. Not only that — you can take that to a whole other level; we want to target the same user, but also only if they like the Tar Heels." AYI does not release official statistics about the effectiveness of its dating services, but the app does have 3.3 million likes on Facebook.
