AshleyMadison.com Linked To A Murder Case

Posted on February 27, 2014

Ashleymadison logo new apr 2010CHICAGO SUN TIMES – Feb 26 - AshleyMadison.com takes its publicity where it finds it, even from a murder case. Allan Kustok is accused of shooting his wife in 2010. In an effort to establish the motive, prosecutors have introduced evidence of two extramarital affairs Kustok pursued with women he met through AshleyMadison.com. AM CEO Noel Biderman acknowledged the Kustok case is helping his website “reach an audience that we probably aren’t able to reach otherwise."

BeehiveID Interview With co-Founder Mary Haskett

Posted on February 25, 2014

BeehiveID Mary HaskettOPW INTERVIEW – Feb 25 – BeehiveID is a new ID verification technology that is being used in online dating. It analyzes an individual's social media history, their friends and posts to determine whether a genuine person or a spambot is posting. TangoWire, a network of niche dating sites, has recently implemented BeehiveID technology. Here is our interview with Mary Haskett, who is the co-founder.

What is BeehiveID's founding story?
I met my co-founder, Dr. Alex Kilpatrick, when we worked together on a large national biometric identification project in the Middle East. We both felt that the way identity is managed online is fundamentally broken. On the Internet, your identity is tied to an email address. Individuals can have as many as they want at no cost. We wanted to see if the identity technologies could be used to verify that an online account was backed by a real person. We were accepted into the three month TechStars startup accelerator in Seattle and developed BeehiveID.

What's your industry specific solution for Internet daters?
We prevent online fraud. BeehiveID combs through the data on social sites like Facebook or LinkedIn. All of the posts, messages, uploaded photographs, likes, etc. create an interconnected graph of data, which we sort through to find the patterns real people display that fraudulent accounts do not. We use those patterns to generate the BeehiveID score, a measure of your proof of personhood. The score is modeled after a credit score, so a low score indicates a fake profile and a high score indicates the account is backed by a real person.

How much does it cost?
The cost is based on the number of identities validated per month. There is a free tier for very low volume users. The highest price (for low volumes) is $1 per verification but the price goes down rapidly as the number of transactions per month increases.

How is it better than the likes of a Rapsheets.com felony and sex offender check?
Those services are great if you are only looking for felony and sex offenders in the US. Facebook alone has more than one billion users worldwide and so we are able to provide identity verification for a much larger number of people. Integrating BeehiveID into a dating site is as easy as adding a button to the site, and having your identity verified requires only a single click.

How can the idating industry work with you?
We would love to talk to anyone who wants to take BeehiveID out for spin. We are happy to discuss options for trial periods.

Only 6% Of Users Think Tinder Is A Hookup App

Posted on February 24, 2014

Tinder screenshot matchTHE GUARDIAN – Feb 24 – Originally launched in the US in Aug 2012, Tinder has since spread around the world. In the last 60 days, Tinder has added ~1M new users in the UK alone, according to co-founder and CMO Justin Mateen. He’s emphatic that Tinder is not a “hookup” app, but a social discovery platform, facilitating an introduction between two people. “Our research shows that ~6% of our users think it’s a hookup app, and early on that number was probably much bigger, so we’ve been working hard,” he says. For now, Tinder is free, although the company will introduce in-app purchases at some point in the future to start making money.

Secret Diamond Club Is Launching In UK

Posted on February 24, 2014

Secretdiamondclub logoDAILYMAIL.CO.UK – Feb 24 - Secret Diamond Club is a dating site for beautiful women and wealthy men. It started in Demark in 2010 and has recently launched in the UK. The site was started by serial entrepreneur Gus Terkelsen, who has a rather controversial reason for his decision to launch in the UK, claiming rich British men can't find love as the women here are unattractive. It costs up to $100K a year for men to join, women pay less but have to meet the strict looks criteria of a panel of twenty ‘experts’ and submit three photographs, including a full body shot.

Posted on February 24, 2014

Ipo picTHE MOTLEY FOOL – Feb 22 –

2. Delivery Agent – works with TV providers and sports teams to help sell on-screen products in real time, using mobile apps and similar software.

3. Dropbox - estimated to be worth ~$10B. No official IPO plans have been made yet.

4. Etsy - handcraft-based online marketplace. Similar companies like Zulily have shown that smaller marketplaces can still have successful IPOs.

5. Zoosk - has already raised ~$60M since its 2007 founding. Zoosk won a lot of membership through its connection with Facebook. The current Facebook success might encourage Zoosk to go public as well.
