Hinge Abandons Tinder Model

Posted on October 12, 2016

MASHABLE – Oct 11 – On Tuesday, Hinge relaunched from a free swiping app into a members-only app for $7/month. In addition to charging a fee — which CEO McLeod said helps users consider the app to be more of a commitment — Hinge has been completely redesigned. Mark Brooks, an online dating app consultant, said that Hinge’s team was smart to no longer compete with Tinder and other free apps. “There’s not much point in being a copycat. They need to be known for something, or they will end up not being known for anything,” Brooks said. “Going serious and paid is a bold move, and a good move. They won’t see as high traffic as Tinder, but I think they will see revenues, and users interested in meaningful relationships.”

The New “Serious Relationship” Hinge Costs $7/Month

Posted on October 11, 2016

Hinge app Oct 16TECH CRUNCH – Oct 11 – Hinge, the newly pivoted "relationship app", has today unleashed an app that it believes is the solution to the "dating apocalypse." The whole idea is to ensure that users are all on the app to find an actual relationship. There is now swiping and a $7/month paywall. The new app looks much closer to Instagram, where users are interacting with each other's content instead of swiping yes or no.

The app secured $1M funding from investors such as Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, Garry Tan, co-founder of Posterous, and the British serial entrepreneur Michael Birch. About the same time, Her went live in the US, and the team decided to relocate to the US. Today, the app has over a million users and is available in the UK, the US, Canada, Brazil, Japan, Australia, Mexico, Thailand, Germany, South Africa and the Netherlands.

Tinder Wants To Make “Dating” Normal In India

Posted on October 11, 2016

Tinder taru kapoorZ BUSINESS – Oct 9 – Tinder set up its office in India in January this year and hired Taru Kapoor as CEO Tinder India. Within five months, Tinder India released its first video ad which was far from the the core "dating-app" and led to severe criticism from various quarters, including social media. When asked, Kapoor said that their intention was to "stir-up" conversation around dating in India. "There is nothing wrong about dating, so we just wanted to stir conversation and put it in a normal Indian household and say dating is normal." Tinder India core audience is 18-25 year olds.

The Success Of JSwipe

Posted on October 11, 2016

JSwipe David Yarus smallerFORWARD.COM – Oct 7 – David Yarus, 30, and his three co-founders launched JSwipe during Passover 2014 to capitalize on the extra downtime people had while home for the holiday. It seems to have worked. The app boasts 800K users worldwide. JSwipe is now officially part of Spark Networks. While prior to the merger Yarus called JDate an "outdated organization" with "an outdated business model," he and his team seem to have fully embraced the challenge of bringing it up to speed.
