Invest Or Not To Invest In Momo?

Posted on May 31, 2017

Momo app logoTHE MOTLEY FOOL – May 29 – Up over 200% in the past 12 months, Momo is one of the best performing tech stocks out there. The company currently trades at 14x revenue. Any hiccup in the business can send the stock crashing. Here are some of the risks of investing in Momo.

  • Government regulation of live streaming
Momo users send virtual gifts as a token of appreciation to content creators. In the early days, that content was often just a peep show, turning Momo into distributors of explicit content. China's Ministry of Culture (MOC) caught on quickly and implemented some restrictions. Additionally, the MOC now requires online streaming platforms to obtain a license from the government. The rules would make it more difficult for new entrants to occupy the streaming space.
  • Not the only game in town
YY is with ~$1B in streaming revenue and 152M MAU well ahead of Momo. Additionally, Tencent invested in the broadcasting app Kuaishou, which announced plans to work with Tencent and Baidu on its platform.

Rela, Chinese Lesbian Dating App, Removed From Internet

Posted on May 30, 2017

Rela screenshotREUTERS – May 29 – Rela, Chinese lesbian dating app, has been shut down, along with its website and main social media account. The app, that was set up in 2012, has ~5M registered users. The service was temporarily suspended due to an "important adjustment in service," Rela told users on its WeChat app account. It was not immediately clear why Rela has been shut down. It is not illegal to be gay in China, although the country regarded homosexuality as a mental disorder until 2001. In April, another gay Chinese dating app, Zank, was also shut down after operating for about four years.

Dating Via Twitter

Posted on May 30, 2017

Loveflutter with twitter logoWASHINGTON POST – May 26 – Twitter doesn't bill itself as a dating service or even a place to meet people. Since its founding in 2006, however, it has emerged as an unlikely matchmaker for singles who share highly specific interests, made searchable using hashtags. The hashtag #WeMetOnTwitter, which has been used in ~500 Twitter posts suggests there are many couples who found lasting romantic partnerships on Twitter. UK dating app Loveflutter works just like Tinder but displays users' Twitter-like bios, which must be 140 characters or less. It has recently launched a feature that embeds users' 10 most recent tweets into their profiles.
