Queer Dating Apps Need To Protect Their Users Better

Posted on February 28, 2018

Grindr safety tips egyptSLATE.COM – Feb 28 – With Grindr and other queer platforms, the burden of keeping safe shouldn't fall solely on users. In late September, Egyptian authorities began a crackdown against the country's queer communities after fans of Mashrou' Leila, an outspoken Lebanese indie rock group with an openly gay band member, displayed a rainbow flag at the group's concert in Cairo. To find and arrest their targets, security forces, among other tactics, created fake profiles on queer dating apps like Grindr and Hornet. The app creators should be responsible for protecting their users. The majority of dating apps don't transmit pictures securely. All of the major dating apps, too, are able to access messages stored on company servers, meaning their contents could be compromised in the event of a government request or, if stored insecurely, in the event of a data breach. To try to protect themselves, users often turn to software that only partially addresses privacy and security issues. But VPNs won't hide a user's location from a dating app, which relies on a phone's built-in GPS sensor for its geolocation features. What's more, in countries that have banned these kinds of tools, downloading or using certain known VPNs or circumvention software might land a user under increased scrutiny. Grindr and Hornet began providing safety info&tips in Arabic to inform users about risks but without implementing changes to protect them too – say, eliminating watermarked app logos on photos, which have been used as evidence in court and blackmail attempts.

The company launched today, with plans to soon expand to other US cities. Its app is a sort of "23andMe meets Tinder meets monogamists." For $19.99 (plus a $10 monthly membership fee), Pheramor will ship users a kit to swab their cheeks, which they then send back for sequencing. The company will combine that information with personality traits and interests from their profile with genetically and socially optimized potential mates in their area.

Young Single Americans Are Confused And Scared About Dating During #Metoo

Posted on February 28, 2018

Threedayrule logoMARKETWATCH – Feb 27 – #MeToo, a movement meant to highlight women's experiences with sexual assault and unwanted sexual advances, have put a damper on the dating experience. Single Americans say they are "extremely confused" about dating now, a recent survey of 3K singletons by dating service Three Day Rule found. Men are concerned about crossing boundaries, having their actions misinterpreted, or even adhering to traditional gender roles like paying for a date, said Three Day Rule CEO and founder Talia Goldstein. Meanwhile, some women said they were too worn out by inappropriate behavior or triggered by the news to want to spend time with men, and some worry about how and when to call out men they're dating for harassment.

Tinder Just Dropped An Interracial Dating Survey

Posted on February 28, 2018

Interracial-coupleMAXIM – Feb 27 – An exhaustive new Tinder study all about interracial dating has revealed some interesting benefits to dating outside your gene pool. The study, which surveyed ~4K respondents, found that 77% of Tinder users become more open-minded about dating outside of their race when they use dating apps. 55% of people said they believe dating apps and online dating in general helps remove the stigma around interracial dating. 66% said dating someone of a different race "enabled them to experience places they weren't previously aware of," and 63% said it gave them an opportunity to try new and exciting things, such as eating delicious foods, experiencing beautiful traditions, and trying to fit in with foreign families.

PonderApp Blockchain Platform Is Making It Possible To Get Paid For Playing Cupid

Posted on February 28, 2018

Ponder iconBTC MANAGER – Feb 27 – Apps like PonderApp are turning matchmaking into a game and rewarding users who help to create pairings. The platform is designed primarily for romantic matches, but it can be extended to recruiting, business partners or roommates. Users need to state whether they're 'looking for love,' or 'just interested in playing matchmaker.' If it's the latter, they’ll be presented with a stream of singles. They can then make suggestions based on the users' profiles. If one of the matches they suggest like each other and would like to take things a step further, they'll both pay a fee of $10. $10 will be kept by the app, and the matchmaker receive the other $10. If the couple eventually decide to get married, the platform will pay the matchmaker $1K.

Alexis Ohanian And Tinder Are Petitioning Unicode For Interracial Couple Emoji

Posted on February 28, 2018

Interracial couple emoji projectTHE VERGE – Feb 27 – Tinder is launching a campaign called #RepresentLove, in collaboration with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and Emojination founder Jennifer 8. Lee, with the goal of petitioning Unicode to introduce interracial couple emoji. The Change.org petition reads "Why is Tinder involved? We believe all love deserves emoji representation." Emoji have been customizable with various skin tone options since 2015, and Microsoft introduced 52K new emoji with the release of Windows 10 in 2016, to account for all possible combinations in a family unit. But diverse emoji family units are still hard to make across platforms; Facebook added 125 new family emoji options last summer, none of them interracial. Tinder's proposal will be fairly simple: three new skin tones for both versions of the preexisting couple emoji. Accounting for all combinations, that would mean the addition of 21 new emoji.
