The Rise And Fall Of Spoonr, An App That Connected Cuddlers

Posted on February 9, 2018

Spoonr closed tweetPAPER MAGAZINE – Feb 8 – Spoonr, originally called Cuddlr, was an app that helped connect those hoping to cuddle. Cuddlr launched in Sep 2014. With 200K downloads immediately, it hit Apple's list of "Top 10 Most Downloaded Apps," and attracted outlets like the New York Times and the Washington Post. The reviews rolled in just a week later, and they weren't pretty. Less than six months later, the creators shut the app down. Then New York entrepreneur Eugene Bentley purchased the app, and a year after Cuddlr's inception, rebranded and relaunched it as "Spoonr." Bentley boasted 300K followers and spoke of hoping to reach 500K in the following six months. Early last year, Spoonr was abandoned. What exactly happened to Spoonr is unclear, but it's likely the app was plagued with the same issues it had when it was Cuddlr – people with motives that contradicted the app's mission statement, co-opting it to hook-up.

Cinemadating logoJERUSALEM POST – Feb 8 – Cinema Dating app is like Tinder, but for dates at the cinema. The app lets users pick a movie and then match them with a partner registered to it. The basis for matching dates is movie interest, date of availability and proximity, in a similar format to Tinder. It includes cinemas across Israel. The app has established a partnership with the Cinematheque in Tel Aviv and is in negotiations with Cinema City. Eventually, the app's founder plans to form partnerships with international cinemas. Cinema Dating will go to CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April.

Tinder Is Launching A New Location-based Feature Set This Year

Posted on February 9, 2018

Tinder logo jan 17TECH CRUNCH – Feb 8 – Tinder will launch a series of new features based on location in 2018. Match Group has been fairly vague on what these new features will entail, having only described them as something that will blur the "distinction between digital and real-life dating, and dating and simply engaging in your social life." Tinder remains one of the biggest drivers of revenue for Match Group, accounting for ~30% of its parent company's revenue in 2017.

How Dating Sites Spy On Users

Posted on February 9, 2018

Ad-trackerAXIOS – Feb 8 – Dating app users provide sensitive information like drug usage habits and sexual preferences. How online dating services use and share that data worries users, according to an Axios-SurveyMonkey poll. OkCupid runs 10 advertising trackers during the search and profile stages of using its site, while Match.com runs 63, according to online privacy company Ghostery. The trackers could pick up where users click or where they look, says Ghostery product analyst Molly Hanson. A spokesperson for Match Group says in a statement said that data collected by its companies "enables us to make product improvements, deliver relevant advertisements and continually innovate and optimize the user experience. Data collected by ad trackers and third parties is 100% anonymized.
