Dating App Happn Wants To Become The Pokémon Go Of Love

Posted on February 14, 2018

Happn didier rappaport 2018THE NEXT WEB – Feb 14 – Thanks to real-time geo-localization, Happn allows users to connect with the people they've crossed paths with. If the feeling is mutual, they have a "crush" and can start messaging. "We're the sidekick of serendipity," said proudly Didier Rappaport – the CEO and founder of Happn.

Q: Happn has been around for 4 years. How did it change over time?
A: We never introduced major changes in the product, but this is going to change soon, very soon.

Q: What's going to change?
A: I can't reveal the details yet, but I can say that we'll massively implement artificial intelligence.

Q: It seems that matchmaking apps are more about data than dating. What’s your take on the matter?
A: Dating businesses have always also been data mines. We have huge flows of fresh data that roll-in every day.

Q: You're surely aware of the criticism that dating apps aren't careful enough with people's data. Are you concerned by this issue?
A: No. The safety and privacy of our users is the central pillar of our company and our mission. Most of our data comes from Facebook and is already publicly shared.

Q: What has been the biggest challenge to the growth of Happn?
A: The high marketing expenses. But we're really close to profitability. It’s a 2018 goal.

Targets Of Online Dating Scams Lost $1B Over Last 3 Years, BBB Says

Posted on February 14, 2018

Bbb logoOMAHA WORLD HERALD – Feb 13 – An investigation by the BBB found that victims in the US and Canada have reported losing ~$1B over the last three years alone as a result of such scams. The BBB estimates that number is low, since many people are too embarrassed to report it. The common denominator among the victims: They believe they have found true love and will do anything to keep it. The FBI Internet Fraud Complaint Center estimates that, besides investment fraud, romance scams cause the greatest dollar loss of any fraud or scam affecting individuals.

Match.com And Alexa’s Valentine’s Mismatch

Posted on February 14, 2018

Match alexa partershipPYMNTS – Feb 13 – Online dating skill on Alexa, with an assist from Match.com, wasn't supposed to be a silly or jokey offering. Some of the advice was reportedly useful. Some was a bit borderline. When asked about whether or not to have sex on the first date, Alexa had two standard answers. "Only if you must, or they're really hot" or "If you do too, do them. If you don't, do you." And many complained that the advice around alcohol was less funny than actually dangerous. "Allow yourself two cocktails if they're cute. Have six if they're not." As of the end of January, Amazon and Match had pulled the skill. Match.com is continuing to work with its own in-house AI, Lara. She is very popular in France and the U.K., where she has been on Facebook Messenger for well over a year. Lara began as a tool to guide people through the registration process and offer up suggestions for potential suitors, but she has evolved a lot since then.

Chappy’s Ollie Locke On The New Rules Of Gay Dating

Posted on February 14, 2018

Chappy logo fullMETRO.CO.UK – Feb 13 – A game-changing gay dating app that launched last year and is now available in London, New York City and LA, Chappy has a lot in common with Bumble so much so that Bumble's founder Whitney Wolfe is one of its backers. Chappy gives users a choice between relationships or hook ups. They've put rules in place so that users' face has to be on every picture, and keywords get flagged whether it be drugs or violence. "Immediately on Grindr and other apps you can send a pic of your dick immediately without speaking – that's not happening on Chappy. First you have to make a match. To be clear we are not against dick pics – we are against unsolicited dic picks," said Locke.

Credit Score Is Important When It Comes To Dating

Posted on February 13, 2018

Match group logo smallBUSINESS INSIDER – Feb 13 – The majority of online daters would prefer a partner with a good credit score than a nice car. A good credit score is perceived to be a sign of responsibility, trustworthiness, and intelligence, according to Discover and Match Group survey of 2,000 American adults. "Money talks, but your credit score can speak more about who you are as a person, and singles agree that those with good credit tend to be conscientious and reliable," says Dr. Helen Fisher, chief scientific advisor for Match.com.

Harmonica: First Egypt’s Dating App

Posted on February 13, 2018

Harmonica iconNEW STATESMAN – Feb 13 – A 2016 study found that while Badoo and Tinder dominate the Spanish and English-speaking worlds respectively, countries in the Middle East tended to use localised apps, if at all. Harmonica is Egypt's first mobile-dating app. The idea behind Harmonica is to approach dating in line with local cultural norms. During the initial match, users don't see much. Female users have the option to hide their photos until they've approved another user to view them. Harmonica's users are given two or three matches a day at most, all selected by the app's algorithm based on a mandatory 30-question survey, and users can only pick one with whom to chat. They're then given a seven-day period, before choosing to progress with their partner further or return to the matching stage.
