'We're announcing a new set of features around dating. This is for building long term relationships. It will be in the Facebook app, and will be totally optional, opt-in. You can make a dating profile, if you want. It was designed with privacy and safety in mind. Your friends aren't going to see your profile. You're only going to be suggested people who are not your friends, who have opted into dating, who fit your preferences. We want Facebook to be a place where you can start meaningful relationships, so we're excited to start rolling this out soon.'

Facebook’s been rumoured to be doing this for a very long time. It’s too early to say how this will affect the dating industry (Match’s stock dropping 20+% today, notwithstanding). But, if it has a negative effect, it’s going to hit the generic sites the most, I’d think. Mind you, there’s always been a difference between “free” sites and paid ones. The clientele is more serious on the latter and you tend to weed out the weirdos (most of them, anyway), the guys living in their parents’ basements, the psycho-chicks, etc. Will that change with FB singles? Who knows?

Facebook literally owns the internet these days. Instagram stories pretty much killed Snapchat. Will be interesting to see how Facebook dating affects other networks. Will be interesting to see if this takes off.
