Q&A With Jaumo’s co-Founders

Posted on October 12, 2018

Jaumo logoREALBUSINESS.CO.UK – Oct 11 – Benjamin Roth and Jens Kammerer were university friends who had already started a thriving social network company when they dreamed up Jaumo, a fuss-free dating and chat app.

Q: How did you start the business?
Jens: We both studied Business Informatics, so that's where we met. I founded my first company, a local social network in Germany called Kwick, in 1999 and Benjamin joined in 2000. Kwick was acquired in 2011 and in the same year, we decided to found Jaumo.

Q: How did you facilitate your growth?
Benjamin: In the beginning, we used the profits we had generated from Kwick to fund Jaumo. We also leveraged Kwick to attract the first customers of Jaumo. The overall growth, in the beginning, was slow but increased after we hit the first 7M users in 2014. Only two years later, we reached 10M users and growth accelerated from there.

Q: How did you keep your business lean?
Jens: During the first 6 years, the company was operated by just the two of us. After we reached 20M users, we decided to bring on new team members to help. We have 20 employees now. As a 100% remote company, we have no offices and work together with a team distributed across 10 different countries.

Q: How do you manage the competition?
Jens: By staying lean and flexible in our business model.

Dating Apps Are Changing The Way We Find Jobs

Posted on October 12, 2018

Bumblebiz pic oct 2017EUROPEANCEO – Oct 11 – On a professional level, LinkedIn has held the monopoly on networking for some years. "LinkedIn is a platform to find a job or to just maintain your résumé online. It's very conventional and very hard to connect with new people in real life through LinkedIn… that's why we decided to create Shapr, which is a link between dating and professional networking," said Ludovic Huraux, a French entrepreneur who had previously built dating site Attractive World. Shapr has 1.5M in the US, UK and France. It uses swiping, and connections are suggested based on the user's interests and location. Shapr users are limited to 10 – 15 matches per day, which Huraux says helps users to form more meaningful relationships and discourages mindless swiping. Shapr was designed solely for professional networkers, but other dating apps are introducing networking elements such as Bumble. Since the launch of Bumble Bizz, the app sees 17M new matches per week and 64K users joining each day. Bumble itself has hired 11 internal team members through Bumble Bizz.

Coffee Meets Bagel Hires New CFO And CTO

Posted on October 11, 2018

Coffeemeetsbagel logo Sep 15CHEDDAR – Oct 10 – Coffee Meets Bagel is adding two new executives to its C-suite. Dawoon Kang, CEO and founder of Coffee Meets Bagel, shares her news and explains what sets the app apart from others.

Q: What made you start CMB?
A: There is a gender imbalance on dating apps – 64% men and 36% women. In general guys are twice as active on dating apps as women. So they get frustrated because they don't get any replies to their messages and women are overwhelmed. So we decided to create a product that speaks to women.

Q: How are you different from apps like Bumble where women make the first move.
A: We are known to be app for people looking for real connection. We invest a lot of time and resources into our algorithm that selects the best quality matches for our users.

Q: You made ~50M matches. What contributed to this type of growth?
A: The big member base, of course. Lot of singles are tired of swiping and our users are really looking for real connections with fewer number of people.

Q: How much do you invest in your algorithm?
A: As you know, earlier this year we raised our B series and we are now building up our data science team.

Q: How much do you reach out to your users for feedback to see if your algorithm is working?
A: All the time.

Q: You have some big announcements for us…
A: We have hired our first CFO, Quincy Yang, who comes from OpenTable and new CTO, Will Wagner.

The Match Group: We Underestimated Tinder, But So Did Sean Rad

Posted on October 10, 2018

General_court_05FORTUNE – Oct 10 – The Match Group on Tuesday filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit accusing it of undervaluing Tinder, saying that Sean Rad was closely involved in Tinder's valuation and underestimated its potential revenues. Tinder co-founder Sean Rad and a group of ex-Tinder workers filed the lawsuit in August, alleging that Match lowballed Tinder's valuation in July of last year to stop Rad accessing from the full value of his stock options. The group alleges that Match created "a false picture of Tinder's financial condition and prospects" resulting in "bogus numbers," or a $3B valuation. IAC say that Rad was closely involved in determining that $3B number. He estimated that Tinder to bring in $500M in revenue this year – significantly less than the $800M they now project for 2018. Match didn't predict Tinder's success over the past year, but neither did Rad, Match claims.'

Goodbye Google+

Posted on October 9, 2018

GooglePlusRIPNEW YORK TIMES – Oct 8 – Google is shutting down Google+, the company's long-struggling answer to Facebook, after it discovered a security vulnerability that exposed the private data of up to 500K users. The breach happened in March and Google did not warn its users about this issue because it didn't appear that anyone had gained access to user information, and the company's "Privacy & Data Protection Office" decided it was not legally required to report it.
