How Muslim Millennials Are Looking for Love

Posted on April 10, 2019

Eshq logoCNET – Apr 10 – More Muslims than ever are turning to apps like Minder and Muzmatch to find romance. "We're the generation that was born with the rise of technology and social media," says Mariam Bahawdory, founder of Muslim dating app Eshq, which, similar to Bumble, allows women to make the first move. "Online dating is generally viewed by some as desperate. But as more people sign up for these apps, that notion is being challenged," says Muzmatch CEO and founder Shahzad Younas. Minder, which launched in 2015, has had ~500K sign-ups. Haroon Mokhtarzada, the CEO, says he was inspired to create the app after meeting several "well educated, highly eligible" Muslim women who struggled to find the right guy to marry. Muzmatch was founded in 2015, and it reached a million members this year.

France’s Tax on Tech Giants Passes First Vote

Posted on April 10, 2019

Tax-moneyTECH CRUNCH – Apr 10 – The lower house of the French parliament has voted in favor of the new tax on tech giants. Big tech companies that generate significant revenue in France will be taxed on their revenue generated in France. Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire has been lobbying other European countries so that big tech companies would stop optimizing their European corporate structure to lower their effective tax rate. This tax is specifically designed for tech companies in two categories – marketplace (Amazon, Uber, Airbnb) and advertising (Facebook, Google, Criteo). France expects to generate €400M in revenue with this new tax in 2019.

UK – Websites to Be Fined Over ‘Online Harms’ Under New Proposals

Posted on April 9, 2019

Online harms picBBC – Apr 8 – Internet sites could be fined or blocked if they fail to tackle "online harms" such as terrorist propaganda, child abuse, harassment, cyber-bullying and the sale of illegal goods, under new government plans. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has proposed an independent watchdog that will write a "code of practice" for tech companies. Home Secretary Sajid Javid said tech giants and social media companies had a moral duty "to protect the young people they profit from". The plans call for an independent regulator to hold Internet companies to account. It would be funded by the tech industry. The government is considering fines for individual company executives and making search engines remove links to offending websites. It is also consulting over blocking harmful websites. But all sorts of issues has yet to be settled. Rebecca Stimson, Facebook's head of UK policy, said: "New regulations are needed so that we have a standardised approach across platforms and private companies aren't making so many important decisions alone."

25% Of Adults Under 40 in Japan Are Still Virgins

Posted on April 9, 2019

JapanINSIDER – Apr 9 – The number of women and men aged 18 to 39 years old who had never had heterosexual sex increased from 21.7% and 20% to 24.6% and 25.8% respectively between 1992 and 2015, which is an increase of ~5% in 23 years. Compared to other countries, the rates of people with no heterosexual experience are 1-5% of people in their 30s in the UK, US, and Australia. There are more and more old people in Japan, and women aren't having enough children to maintain the population. This has led some to refer to the country as a "demographic time bomb". People in their 30s who still live with their parents are known as "parasitic singles," and some are turning to cartoons for companionship.

Dandy – the Dating App for College Students

Posted on April 9, 2019

Dandy iconDAILY TROJAN – Apr 7 – Inspired by a previous on-demand restaurant service app he designed, Leor Massachi, one of the co-founders of Dandy, wanted to find a way for dating app users to connect in real life faster than they would on traditional dating apps. Right now, the app is targeting college students. Users can only access Dandy when they are notified that the app is going live. Each user is then randomly paired with another student who attends the same university. When the individual's photo pops up on their screen, the user gets five seconds to like the person. If they both like each other, they go onto a three-minute chat. If they connect after that, they can choose to exchange numbers and go straight to iMessage to meet up in the real world.

LinkedIn Stops ‘KinkedIn’ Dating Site’s TM Bid

Posted on April 9, 2019

Linkedin screenshot picWIPR – Apr 8 – Linkedin has been successful in halting the registration of sexual fetish interest site, 'KinkedIn'. On April 4, the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) ruled 'KinkedIn' could not be registered after LinkedIn said the mark was highly similar to its own trademark and will cause consumers to believe there is a connection between the two companies. JK Solutions applied to register the KinkedIn trademark for services including "personal introductions, computer dating services and video dating services" in 2017.
