RADII CHINA – Jan 4 – According to a report from Chinese dating site Zhenai, 70% of 90s babies are actively searching for love. Among them, 26% expressed an intense desire to get married, but 30% were indifferent to marriage. In fact, the study found that 40% of singles did not want to have a wedding, women more so than men. But love is undoubtedly still on the mind: the survey showed that being single was also the number one worry (64%), followed by being poor (45%) and having no friends (29%).

Today Is the Busiest Day of the Year
ZOOSK – Jan 5 – Today is "Dating Sunday", first Sunday in January which is the busiest day of the year for online dating. Dating app Zoosk is anticipating that the number of messages sent in the US alone will hit the 1.5M mark. For singles looking to truly make the most of the day, the best time to get online is in the evening. Women, in particular, experience the biggest activity boost. In 2019, women's activity uplift was double that of men's on Zoosk. Zoosk's CMO Luciana Telles says that it comes down to perfect timing. She explains: "Dating Sunday falls during a time period when singles are extra motivated to look for online connections. It's the first weekend after New Year's Eve, which means that people have not only set themselves New Year's resolutions, they've had a few days to think about how to put them into practice. Additionally, it's about 6 weeks out from Valentine's Day, meaning that singles who spark something on Jan 5 have plenty of time left to lock down a date for Feb 14."
Lumen, Dating App for 50+ Has Attracted 1.5M Users
BBC NEWS – Jan 1 – Charly Lester founded dating app Lumen in London in 2018, believing she had spotted a gap in the market. She knew lots of people in their 50s and 60s who were just as phone-fixated as the younger generation. Her app has attracted ~1.5M users in less than a year. It's free to join, but the company makes money by charging users for "premium" features. These include the ability to search potential partners with "advanced filters" and the chance to see who has saved you as a "favourite". More established companies also cater for mature daters, like OurTime and Silver Singles. They began as website platforms but have now developed apps. OurTime says it has seen a 146% increase in active users in the past two years, with 63% of joiners registering by mobile.

Momo Has 4 Plans for Future Growth
THE MOTLEY FOOL – Dec 31 – Momo is often called the "Tinder of China" because it owns two top dating apps: its eponymous app and Tantan, a Tinder clone it acquired in 2018. Most of Momo's revenue comes from its core app's live video streaming platform, which lets viewers buy virtual gifts for their favorite broadcasters. A smaller percentage comes from ads, mini-games, and premium dating services. Momo's stock rallied ~50% over the past 12 months, even as it faced Tantan's temporary suspension from Chinese app stores.
- Growing its users and engagement rates
Its monthly active users (MAUs) on its core app rose 3% annually to 114.1M last quarter, marking a slowdown from previous quarters. To bring in more users, Momo launched a new version of its app in August. - Supporting the "healthy" growth of its live videos
Momo is closely monitoring its live video platform to avoid a crackdown by China's cyberspace regulators. - Growing its base of paid users
Its number of paid users, including Tantan, grew 7% annually to 13.4M last quarter. That represents just a tiny slice of its total MAUs, but it's implementing fresh strategies to boost that percentage. - The monetization of Tantan
Tantan grew its paid users 41% annually to 4.5M last quarter. These users pay for premium features like unlimited swipes and more matches. Tantan's total revenue rose 89% annually to 310M yuan ($44M), or 7% of Momo's top line.
This Is the Hottest Time of Year for Online Dating
MARKETWATCH – Dec 31 – For many singles, the holidays are the loneliest time of year and, in the New Year, the $3B dating industry sees a surge in users. Zoosk typically sees a 20% jump in users in the first two weeks of the year and eHarmony sees a similar increase in mobile registrations since the holidays. Grindr usually experiences a 30%-plus increase in users over the holiday season. Match.com and OKCupid also see an uptick between Christmas and Valentine's Day. "Many singles sit around the family dinner table during the holidays and think, 'Maybe it would be better to have a partner," says Mark Brooks, a dating-industry analyst and the editor of Online Personals Watch. "That's when they start hitting dating sites in droves and go on dates before the indigestion sets in."
